Description

A story-based approach to grammar and writing for children! In this level, students review the four parts of speech previously learned, before introducing the next four. Exciting characters (and their correlating colors) are used to represent each part. Stories, songs, and activities bring the content to life, helping it to stick in the brain long term! (LOVE that Classical methodology!) Each lesson takes 30-60 minutes, but can be spread over several days (depending on age and attention span of student) with the goal of one lesson per week. Each lesson follows the same simple pattern: Read and Sing, Connect and Copy, Learn and Find, and Write and Share. Scripture verses and biblical traits are emphasized throughout. Grammar songs are set to familiar tunes such as Old McDonald, Ring Around the Rosie, etc. making them very easy to teach AND learn! (Warning: they’re catchy! Your whole family will be singing them!) The writing portion of each lesson offers flexibility and can be completed at 3 different levels: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. This makes it possible to use the same level workbook with multiple ages, although the teacher needs some one-on-one time with each student to complete the writing activities. A student may also benefit from going through the workbook a second time around… the following year, gleaning a deeper layer of understanding. Teacher and student both use this same book, with answer key at the back. The back section also includes 9 coloring pages of the characters and their songs, allowing a hands-on way to reinforce the material. For additional coloring pages, purchase the Coloring Book (013940). 178 pgs, pb. ~Nancie

Publisher's Description of Grammar Castle's Workbook on the 8 Parts of Speech, 2nd and 3rd Grade with Teacher Key
Discover the Kingdom of Writing through adventures in Grammar Castle. Using a metaphorical kingdom, this interactive grammar program helps students to get a grasp on grammar while learning to write well.
Why not learn grammar in a fun way!
Each part of speech is a character living in the Kingdom of Writing, so it is easy for students to remember them and their functions.
Come meet the Royal Family, the Describer Family, and the Grammar Friends that personify the 8 parts of the speech. Meet the good Knights of the Write Table -- Sir Sentence, Sir Punctuation, Sir Usage, and Sir Rhythm -- but avoid the bad Knights of the Wrong Table -- Sir Run-ons-a-lot, Sir Fragment, Sir Mismark, and Sir Wrong Words. They are troublemakers in Writing.
Also, to reinforce the mastery of the grammar songs, students will enjoy coloring the Songbook Color Pages in the back of the workbook. The Teacher's Key is included.
Category Description for Complete English Programs

Category Description for Grammar Castle / Kingdom Writing

Grammar Castle & the Kingdom of Writing is a classically minded grammar and writing program for Grades K-8, emphasizing Christian character values throughout. Full-color Student Workbooks are engaging and interactive… filled with stories, illustrations, metaphors, and songs that bring grammar and writing to life. As students move up through the curriculum levels, a strong foundation is laid in grammar, usage, and mechanics, as well as step-by-step writing and oral presentation skills. Those familiar with classical methodology won’t be surprised at how well students can memorize and assimilate the important information using creative memory devices (color coding, pictures, mnemonics, jingles, etc.), helping it to stick in the brain--- long term! For example, each part of speech is represented by an engaging character living in Kingdom of Writing… their color, symbols, characteristics, and songs help students to make connections, remembering the functions of each part of speech.

The curriculum’s writing process, influenced by the Canons of Rhetoric (invention, arrangement, style, memory, delivery), focuses on brainstorming, paragraph arrangement, essay format, memorable style, editing, and delivery. Tasks are broken down into small steps and practiced over several lessons, helping students not to feel overwhelmed. Models from scripture are used to teach composition and speaking skills and the use of authentic literature is also integrated into writing and grammar instruction… perfect for those who enjoy a Charlotte Mason approach.

With the goal of one lesson per week, each curriculum level is easily finished in a school year. Teacher guided lessons take 30 min to 1 hour in the elementary levels and 1-2 hours at the middle school level, and can be done once a week (perfect for a co-op setting) or spread over 2-3 days during the week. Each level has a consumable Student Workbook which follows a particular lesson pattern, making it easy to teach and easy for students to get into a rhythm of learning. Teacher and student share the same book up through 3rd grade (answer key in back), but in 4th grade and up… a teacher e-book mirrors the student book with answers overlaid. The optional Story & Songbook (013934) and Coloring Book (013940) can be purchased separately for extra support but aren’t necessary to the success of the program.
