Watercolor Step-by-Step
Designed to help the beginner understand basic watercolor tools and techniques, lessons incorporate drawing, art history and observation. Lessons are short with step-by-step instructions and color photos. Assignments ask the student to look up an artist for further reading, connect lessons to the Bible, and practice their sketching and painting skills. This could easily be used outside of the Abeka curriculum. Recommended supplies: Paint tubes in the following colors: cadmium yellow light, cadmium red deep, ultramarine blue, burnt umber, yellow ochre, alizarin crimson, Prussian blue, veridian green, Hooker's green dark, and burnt sienna. Also: watercolor paper (11" x 15") in 72# and 140#, large and small round brush, 1" flat brush, #4 rigger brush, palette, 2B pencil, soft rubber eraser, sketchbook, masking tape and gummed brown kraft tape.
This book was designed to help the beginning watercolorist understand the basic techniques of the medium, select the proper tools, and know where to start. Each of the 15 demonstrations incorporates drawing, art history, and observation exercises. Given this foundation, your high schooler copies the author's step-by-step demonstration paintings, creates his own compositions, and paints them in watercolor. He will paint still life, landscape, flowers, architecture, portraits, and more. Students should possess basic drawing skills and a basic understanding of color mixing (such as red + yellow = orange), concepts taught in Abeka's elementary art texts. Designed to be used in grades 7–12.
With clear instructions for the teacher, even a not-too-artsy parent can work in an art lesson in 25-30 minutes a week. A year at a glance schedule and the scope & sequence of topics covered lay out what you can expect for the school year. Teacher tips and plan ahead supply lists make this program very user-friendly. Teacher help and student pages at each level are all in one convenient book. Art concepts or techniques are clearly defined at the beginning of each lesson. This includes vocabulary words. In grades 4-6, the focus of the lessons is basic drawing techniques, painting, color concepts and perspective. I appreciate the extended projects for more artsy students to do on their own after the lesson. In the younger levels K-3, projects are more of the cut & paste crafty projects kids love, with some basics on the color wheel. The holiday and seasonal pages are especially fun! Many of the pages are even started for the student to finish. You could not find an easier way to work some arts & crafts into your week than this friendly, one book format series that only requires a few basic art supplies. Perforated pages are not reproducible. Large 9" x 12" format. Books in the series range from 119-167 pgs, pb. ~Sara
