I was looking for a resource to use to teach my daughter how to write various kinds paragraphs with introductory sentence thesis sentence supporting sentences and concluding sentence Then I wanted to expand this form and teach my daughter to write the five paragraph expository essay When my two older children went to college I learned I had not spent enough time on this type of writing My sons were writing lots of these essays in college Also the current SAT requires the student to write just such an essay Writing Skills 2 exceeded my expectations and it cost only $1050 Our regular English textbook gave writing assignments but did not supply enough detailed instruction Writing Strands has been excellent for teaching creative writing but it does not teach the standard five paragraph essay with thesis statement This book teaches expository writing in a series of small steps Each assignment was easy enough to avoid writer's block or a feeling of inadequacy Before asking the student to write topic sentences the student is asked to write supporting sentences for a topic such as "ways of relaxing" In the next lesson the book supplies the topic sentences and the student writes four supporting sentences for each topic sentence The next lesson adds the requirement that the student write a concluding sentence After such thorough and nonthreatening preparation the student is then ready to write five sentence paragraphs This book teaches the student to write six kinds of paragraphs: example process reason classification definition and comparison and contrast As well as teaching paragraph and essay writing Writing 2 teaches grammar in a practical way The book covers parts of speech compound sentences subordinate clauses and prepositional phrases as used in the student's writing For example the student is taught to vary his sentence structure by starting a sentence with an adverb or by using prepositional phrases rather than adjectives to describe nouns After teaching paragraph writing as well as grammatical aids to better writing the student is taught to write five paragraph essays This book has proved invaluable to me It helped me teach my daughter how to structure and organize her writing It was easy for me to use I did not have to do any preparation and it provided easy tools for me to use in teaching writing Incidentally this book was recommended to me by Scottish Rite Hospital when my child was diagnosed with dyslexia They suggested I use Writing 2 with my child to help her organize her writing and learn to write clearly and effectively This book worked great I would recommend it for grades 7 through 12 for any student who has not yet mastered the five paragraph essay I do not believe it can be matched for effectiveness and cost

Good for helping students go from writing paragraphs to writing essays. A little dry, but doesn't talk down to them.

My child is an average writer and needs prompts. I loved this curriculum and the way it offered methodical writing practice. It was very good. We used Writing Skills 1 in 7th and WS 2 in 8th grade.

I've enjoyed the first books in series, so I'm buying the next volume.
