Saxon is great
I really like this curriculum. The only thing I didn't like was that the meeting book is not included.

I love the thorough, step by step process Saxon Math provides. I put my full confidence in Saxon Math. Their process is so incremental that my children can grasp onto new concepts better and more soundly. My children have confidence in there math abilities. I think that that is profound in itself.

Easy to use.
I have 5 children that have used Saxon math. It is clear and easy to use, yet flexable enough to help them succeed. Three of my children are up at least one grade level and when my daughter decided she wanted to go to community school, not only was she moved up a grade, but math was easy because she had a very strong foundation. Saxon math worked for us.

Saxon can do what most teachers can't.
I can't say enough positive about this system. It is clearly made by intuitive and intelligent people who know how to slide concepts into a learning environment and make it look easyeasier than I ever could. It doesn't occur to me to develop math for someone else, naturally. These workbooks ease the student from concept to concept until, like a circular ladder, the child is steadily rising into more "difficult" concepts without even realizing their achievement. Worth the cost even if the price were doubled. Math doesn't have to be hard to be effectivefull of traps and tricks to "strengthen" the student. More often than not, they're not strengthened but frustrated. This series is a stunning achievement that I wish everyone could discover.

We love Saxon!
I am in my 7th year of home school and am convinced Saxon math is one of the best math curriculums out there. We briefly tried switching to Singapore on the recommendation of a friend, but my kids were lost and concepts didn't seem to be explained as clearly. Saxon explains the why behind the math, requires little time for me to prepare and gives my kids confidence when it comes to approaching new word problems. I'm so thankful we began with this program years ago!

Great Math Curriculum
We love Saxon for math. It is no nonsense. It introduces new topics then reviews them periodically so that the child doesn't forget what they learned.

Tried and true
I love the Saxon math. It seems like it's been around forever and still is the best math program I know of. It's simple to teach and simple for the kids to understand :) I love the repetition throughout. I highly recommend it! My kids all love math because this program makes it fun and easy to learn! Thank you Saxon Math! You make this mamma very happy :)

Saxon Math 2
I have used Saxon Math with all 5 of my kids. I really like the program. I like the scripted out lessons in the early grades books. I also like the continual review. It's a well done series.

At first Saxon 2 seemed far too easy It seemed like my son had covered all of the material However I then read Art Reed's book about Saxon math (It's about the older editions but most of it applies in elementary) I became convinced that doing math every school day the entire lesson and expecting daily mastery was necessary My son flew through the book A few times in the beginning he asked to skip problems or do less pages but I said no Therefore he gave up and eventually came to work very happily and love math Now he will start Saxon 3 5 months early And lest you think you might want to skip a lot of problems; think twice My son is now doing multi digit addition and subtraction in HIS HEAD because he had SO MUCH practice it became rote Also I only use the workbooks and teach myself when new material comes up We use a fun large wall calendar and he uses Critical Thinking Math which covers patterns so I feel the meeting was also unnecessary

Love Teaching Saxon
I have used Saxon Math for all 7 of my children. We only homeschool for the elementary years and then they attend our wonderful public school. We have graduated 2 Salutatorians, one was 6th in her class and one was 5th in his class. Our current 10th grader is advanced enough in math that he has been removed from the general class and is doing an online class with 3 other students. We have recently adopted an 8 and year old who had very little education so without question we dove right into Saxon K. Saxon math is easy to teach and I find that my children easly retain the concept.

replacement Consumables are pricey.
We really like Saxon and will continue using it as we educate our 5 children. We have invested of course, in the initial Homeschool Kits when we began new levels (school years). However the price of the consumables gets pricey. It would be nice to see this particular package without the fact cards...I have stacks of them leftover from our last child that went through this particular level. 34 + dollars for the two workbooks and the factcards is just plain HIGH. The meeting book is separately available for 14 dollars...again HIGH. Kind of leaves honest homeschoolers in a tough spot...you've got to have those consumables to use with you next child but gracious sakes !

I have children K10 and Saxon math has worked so well for all ability and grade levels in our family. At one point, with a new baby and four students, I tried a workbook approach that wasn't so teacher intensive, and after 6 weeks we went right back to Saxon. Each concept builds on the one before, and the review built into each problem set is just right; ie. a story problem or two each day, but never an entire set of 25 story problems. Highly recommended!!!

BEST ANSWER: I'd imagine that an average 2nd grade math student would be able to jump right in. There's some review of previously learned concepts. Additionally, the idea with this program is not that you know everything before you move on, but that you are introduced to a topic and continue to practice it. Mastery will come with time, and lessons build on each other incrementally, logically, and with lots of practice and parent involvement.

The Saxon website has online placement tests that can help determine the correct book to start with. You could also see the table of contents for different levels to see if your child has learned the concepts that are taught in that level. The first couple of Saxon books move a little slowly but they give a good foundation for later elementary when they become pretty challenging.

most likely yes because you can go slow with concepts until he/she has grasped what might be new. Every child is different and every school has touched on different focal points. The beauty of teaching at home is you can pace it according to your childs level.

Saxon has online placement tests but you will probably be fine. Go as slow as you need to get mastery. The first half is review of 1st. You can get mastery because you are always reviewing.

I would like to not have to buy the entire kit...I know that "it's worth it" to get the whole kit, but I truly cannot afford the extra if I can just use the workbooks at this grade level and can improvise for manipulatives and such. Are the workbooks straightforward enough to not need a textbook or teacher's book at the second grade level? Thankyou

BEST ANSWER: You need to buy the teacher's manual so that you can do the math meeting each day. It's very scripted and wellwritten, but it would be difficult to know how to fill in the meeting book without it. I bought a used teacher's manual on ebay for $10 last year. Also, if you have a local curriculum swap center, that's a great place to buy the manuals used. Hope that helps!

The good thing about the teacher text is it gives you pointers on teaching the newer concepts and ideas for drills. I find the amount of drills included to be very time consuming. You get fact cards which are good to keep up on, but it depends on how in depth you want to go each lesson as to whether you get the whole teaching set.

I would not advise to manage without the teacher's book. Instead I would go toward Mathmammoth or another curriculum allilone. But with Saxon I don't see how you can do without it. It IS really worth it ! But know that you really can resale it after using it, it has a great secondhand value.

It is possible to use the student workbooks independently from the teacher guide, but I would truly recommend borrowing the teacher book from someone else or checking it out from the library. The language used in the lessons is really good and used in Saxon Math 3.

The answers to the workbook pages are in the teacher's manual. However, the math is very basic and easy to figure the answer without a key. I appreciate the explanation of each lesson that the teacher's manual presents. I have used it with 3 children with good results.

This set comes with just the student workbooks and the flash cards. The teachers manual has the answers. The teachers manual is scripted and has the lessons to teach the student. Then the student uses these workbooks to do the problems.

No. Saxon K through Saxon 3 is a different format than Saxon 5/4 and up. The lower grades come with two workbooks and a set of flashcards. The answers for the meeting etc are in the teacher's manual, which is a separate purchase.

The Saxon 2 workbooks and fact cards are simply the worksheets and flash cards. The answers and actual lesson plans are found in the spiral bound teacher's manual, lesson by lesson.

Is this the homeschool edition (i.e., the same workbooks in the home study kit that are not common core aligned)?

BEST ANSWER: I'm not exactly familiar with the home study kit, but this workbook is used for the homeschool edition of saxon 2 (teacher edition attached below). It is not specifically common core aligned, although I understand that some changes will be coming, as Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has purchased the Saxon curriculum. I hope someone else has more insight to add!

I love the thorough, step by step process Saxon Math provides. I put my full confidence in Saxon Math. Their process is so incremental that my children can grasp onto new concepts better and more soundly. My children have confidence in there math abilities. I think that that is profound in itself. Easy to use.I have 5 children that have used Saxon math. It is clear and easy to use, yet flexable enough to help them succeed. Three of my children are up at least one grade level and when my daughter decided she wanted to go to community school, not only was she moved up a grade, but math was easy because she had a very strong foundation. Saxon math worked for us. Was this review helpful? Yes (0) No (0)

Saxon can do what most teachers can't.I can't say enough positive about this system. Was this review helpful? Yes (0) No (0)

We love Saxon!I am in my 7th year of home school and am convinced Saxon math is one of the best math curriculums out there. Was this review helpful? Yes (0) No (0)

At first Saxon 2 seemed far too easy It seemed like my son had covered all of the material However I then read Art Reed's book about Saxon math (It's about the older editions but most of it applies in elementary) I became convinced that doing math every school day the entire lesson and expecting daily mastery was necessary My son flew through the book A few times in the beginning he asked to skip problems or do less pages but I said no Therefore he gave up and eventually came to work very happily and love math Now he will start Saxon 3 5 months early And lest you think you might want to skip a lot of problems; think twice My son is now doing multi digit addition and subtraction in HIS HEAD because he had SO MUCH practice it became rote Also I only use the workbooks and teach myself when new material comes up We use a fun large wall calendar and he uses Critical Thinking Math which covers patterns so I feel the meeting was also unnecessary Was this review helpful? Love Teaching SaxonI have used Saxon Math for all 7 of my children. Was this review helpful? Yes (0) No (0)

replacement Consumables are pricey. Was this review helpful? Yes (0) No (0)

There's some review of previously learned concepts. Additionally, the idea with this program is not that you know everything before you move on, but that you are introduced to a topic and continue to practice it. Mastery will come with time, and lessons build on each other incrementally, logically, and with lots of practice and parent involvement. Reply

The Saxon website has online placement tests that can help determine the correct book to start with. You could also see the table of contents for different levels to see if your child has learned the concepts that are taught in that level. The first couple of Saxon books move a little slowly but they give a good foundation for later elementary when they become pretty challenging. Reply

most likely yes because you can go slow with concepts until he/she has grasped what might be new. Every child is different and every school has touched on different focal points. The beauty of teaching at home is you can pace it according to your childs level. Reply

It's very scripted and wellwritten, but it would be difficult to know how to fill in the meeting book without it. I bought a used teacher's manual on ebay for $10 last year. Reply

I would not advise to manage without the teacher's book. Instead I would go toward Mathmammoth or another curriculum allilone. But with Saxon I don't see how you can do without it. It IS really worth it ! But know that you really can resale it after using it, it has a great secondhand value. Reply

It is possible to use the student workbooks independently from the teacher guide, but I would truly recommend borrowing the teacher book from someone else or checking it out from the library. The language used in the lessons is really good and used in Saxon Math 3. Reply

The answers to the workbook pages are in the teacher's manual. However, the math is very basic and easy to figure the answer without a key. I appreciate the explanation of each lesson that the teacher's manual presents. I have used it with 3 children with good results. Reply

This set comes with just the student workbooks and the flash cards. The teachers manual has the answers. The teachers manual is scripted and has the lessons to teach the student. Then the student uses these workbooks to do the problems. Reply

No. Saxon K through Saxon 3 is a different format than Saxon 5/4 and up. The lower grades come with two workbooks and a set of flashcards. The answers for the meeting etc are in the teacher's manual, which is a separate purchase. Reply

The Saxon 2 workbooks and fact cards are simply the worksheets and flash cards. The answers and actual lesson plans are found in the spiral bound teacher's manual, lesson by lesson. Reply

Vote for the best answer above! Is this the homeschool edition (i.e., the same workbooks in the home study kit that are not common core aligned)?User on Jan 27, 2017BEST ANSWER: I'm not exactly familiar with the home study kit, but this workbook is used for the homeschool edition of saxon 2 (teacher edition attached below). It is not specifically common core aligned, although I understand that some changes will be coming, as Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has purchased the Saxon curriculum. I hope someone else has more insight to add! Reply
