Product Description:

The Combo kit includes all Level 1 components plus Instructor's Directions for Kindergarten, two consumable student worktexts, and a set of six phonetic storybook readers. The student worktexts are totally revised, even down to the theme and names. With a train theme, the All Aboard and On Track workbooks teach alike and different, classification, completing a pattern, tracing, following directions, reading readiness skills, letter recognition, letter sounds, manuscript writing, word blending, vocabulary, beginning reading, comprehension, spelling, listening, and speaking. On Track also includes ten tear-out, color, and read storybooks. The six phonetic storybook readers are correlated to the instruction, reinforcing the phonics, reading, and writing skills taught. One colorful reader covers each short vowel, plus a sixth reader with combined short vowel words. Student materials are also available separately for teaching more than one student with the program. For parents who did not purchase the Combo kit initially, the Instructor's Directions for Kindergarten is not available separately; however, the publisher says that you should not need it. Read on for a full description of the Level 1 kit. We are again able to offer the workbooks and readers for the Sing, Spell, Read & Write kits; see below for Kindergarten components.

This kit includes the following items:

Category Description for Sing, Spell, Read & Write:

Considering the approach, ease of use, content, child-appeal, benefits, effectiveness and cost of all the phonics programs we were familiar with, Sing, Spell, Read & Write was our choice for personal use. We have used several programs and read about many others. Although we didn't use this program in total with our children (because we extended the spelling, used italic handwriting instead of ball and stick, etc.) we did find it the most used and useful of those we tried. AND the results were wonderful! If you're looking for something to really lay it all out for you, something that works, is easy to use, and will have your child singing the letter sounds in days, followed closely by actually reading... this is what we recommend! Here are some of our reasons:

  • The "raceway" theme is very appealing and motivating to children, who love tracking their success via race car around a track as they complete the 36 steps to independent reading.
  • The songs are contagious - children will sing and sing and learn their letter sounds, long and short vowel sounds, blending vowels and consonants, and digraphs almost effortlessly - and enjoy it! That is, if you can bear to listen to it sung over and over, multiplied by x times the number of children using it throughout the years.
  • The 17 phonetic, full-color storybooks cover all 36 steps, providing immediate, rewarding reinforcement for the decoding skill just learned. This makes good sense.
  • The games are not just fluff, but real fortification of phonetic skills. They are more fun, however, if you can play with more than one child.
  • The step-by-step instructor's manual provides easy-to-follow directions for all lessons. It will aid you in understanding/teaching the phonics program - and give you the confidence to do it!
  • Included is a complete, phonetic spelling program dove-tailing with the phonetic constructs being learned and a complete handwriting program (if you use ball and stick manuscript).
  • Two workbooks include grammar and creative writing as well as letter recognition, sequencing, phonemic awareness, phonics practice, manuscript writing, reading, comprehension and spelling.
  • phonics songs are now all featured on CD
  • The two workbooks and the assessment book included in the set are the only consumables in the program. These are also available separately if you are teaching additional students.

To be honest, we have just a few quibbles:

  • Some of the audios are not as clear or distinct as a perfectionist might demand. Some may go a little too "fast" for your taste - notably the Ferris wheel song used to practice blending sounds smoothly. For us, this was a plus, since we kept at it until we could keep up with the song, resulting in perfect blending!
  • The prizes have been eliminated from the program (although the empty Treasure Chest is still included). However, as we always thought these were cheesy, we have traditionally included a bag of 36 prizes from our own Incentive Box (a $20 value!) free with Level 1 Kits or Kindergarten/Level 1 Combo Kits. This free incentive bag will continue to be included although they have dropped their prizes.

The kit has been revised since we last used it and now includes an instructor's manual instead of videos, audios on CD and cassette, and newly-designed workbook covers, with some color printing inside (selected pages of the Raceway Book are full-color). However, the content appears to be very similar to the 1st edition; even the design of the Raceway chart and many of the readers have not changed.

I used this curriculum to teach my children reading when we homeschooled and loved it.<br />Now my daughter is homeschooling her children and I wanted them to get the same foundation for reading. The best phonic program out there.

I am very excited to finally buy this product! I used it in Texas as a Kinder Para Professional . The students were very successful because of this program. I live in Alabama now and I am a Preschool teacher at a school that doesn't have a particular program. I finally broke down and bought me this curriculum so my children can be happy and successful! I'm so excited for this to arrive ! It may just make a Pandemic school year a much happier one!

I used this phonetic method of teaching reading to my own 3 kids 3 decades ago, and now am using this with a new generation of grandchildren. The system is engaging and thorough. All 3 of my adult children have become lifelong readers--I credit a portion of this to the way that they were initially taught through Sing Spell Read and Write.

I used the Sing, Spell, Read, Write Kindergarten edition to teach my three year old her letters. Now, I am moving up to the combo level 1 kit as she will turn four and has expressed an interest to read. I have a one year old and one on the way, so I am planning on using this three times over!

This program came highly recommended. My son is a very active learner and I am hoping this will help him grasp reading concepts. He seems to be falling behind at school so I will be using this in addition to what he is doing there.

We will be homeschooling our oldest in September, this program was suggested to us, after lots of research we have decided to go with it! It is near impossible to find this combo kit in Canada, so we came across your website and are having it shipped to a post office box near our province of British Columbia! thanks!

I used this program as a child and am very excited to continue the education now with my daughter! It was fun and enjoyable as a child and my daughter is already looking forward to it...especially the treasure chest feature.
Allison R on Jul 9, 2018
Reading online reviews, some people fussed that it was too expensive, but nobody complained about it not working to teach their child to read. I thought that was telling, as with other systems there is always some feedback of "This did NOT work for my child," etc.

I have a 2nd grader struggling to read and a kindergartener. Can I use this program for both of them in one year - her using the kindergarten part and him the level 1?
A shopper on Jul 27, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes. My son has struggled with learning to read due to dyslexia. This program has been the best one for him and shown quick positive results helping to build his confidence. He will be in 2nd grade and we will begin our year continuing to use this program.
Your kindergartener will also be set to go with level 1. And as you go through it together, it can be a good review for your 2nd grader too.
How many days a week is is the level 1 combo kit?
A shopper on Jul 1, 2020
BEST ANSWER: There is no required daily/weekly schedule. We did roughly one hour a day Monday-Thursday and used Friday as needed. Each lesson has a recommendation on how many days it should take to complete (each lesson is different), but I never worried about that. I went at my daughters pace. We started Level 1 in Kindergarten and completed it the end of 1st grade which was my goal.
Does the teachers manual for K and first grade??
A shopper on Jul 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The teacher's manual is for the first grade portion. For the kindergarten material, all there is is a little pamplet.

BEST ANSWER: Clings were included with my kit. I think the extra clings are if you need a replacement for a subsequent child or lost them.
We love this program, I'm currently using it with my third and fourth child. :)
If you have already used a different curriculum how do you know which level to begin with?
A shopper on Mar 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The kindergarten level is really basic and is basically reviewed in the 1st grade level- just at a quicker pace. I've not seen the second grade level yet, so I'm not sure where it begins. If you've done very much of another curriculum, I'd probably at least start with level one instead of Kindergarten.
id this good product?
A shopper on Dec 11, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I started with this kit in the fall for my kindergarten boy. We have some concerns that he is mildly dyslexic (like his daddy), and so far this kit has been so wonderful and helpful. When you focus on the sounds of the letter, everything else kind of falls into place. It is colorful and engaging for a rambunctious little boy whom hates sitting still. The race car theme helps a ton, as well as the goodie bag. I love the way it is laid out, and for the price, believe this is a great deal to cover the first 2 years of writing, reading and phonics. I would highly recommend...especially for someone new to homeschooling.

We used Sing Spell Read and Write K and Level 1 Combo Kit for 3 of my 4 children This was fun Fun FUN!! It was well worth the money as this is a full 2 year Language Arts/Phonics/Spelling/Reading curriculum that gives a child a firm foundation to build upon All phonetic rules have catchy songs that you will be humming in your head WELL past 1st grade! Racing around the track was a great visual for my children to see how much they have learned Although I believe having pride in a job well done as payment the prize box was a great incentive to my boys I recommend this foundational phonics program to "anyone" new to homeschooling It's just as much FUN for Mom as it is for the child!

I am using this program for my preschooler and 1st grader The Kindergarten books are more of a preschool level with the letter identification and repetitive worksheets My daughter is really enjoying them despite the repetition The level one beginning book was far too easy for my 1st grader and I skipped it completely I love how the book is teaching him to spell without him even realizing it! I am a terrible speller so I wanted to make sure I used a program that laid out how to teach spelling really well The spelling lists are long but I think learning to spell is important so I am pleased with them My first grader is ahead of most of the readers but they are good practice and we supplement with added reading Both my kids really enjoy the songs and games We use the songs in other parts of the day to "get the wiggles out" The teacher's manual is well laid out and even suggests pacing for the teaching In some cases my son is moving faster than the pacing but I enjoy having a pacing goal that I can speed up or slow down based on my child
July 30, 2013
We taught two of our children to read using Sing Spell Read and Write and they are now very strong readers SSRW makes learning to read fun rather than an academic process It comes with a CD that has cute and fun songs to learn phonics which all of my children enjoyed It also includes games like "pick a sound" which is similar to "Go Fish" but with letter sounds and blends; and a Bingo like game with blends The accompanying workbook teaches handwriting and basic language skills As you progress through the program with your child you advance a race car around a track to indicate the progress that has been made The program is very motivating and fun! The best part about Sing Spell Read and Write is the books They have sweet innocent story lines but are loaded with content compared to other early reading books There are comprehension analytical and inference questions for discussion in the teachers manual which prepared myself and the children for reading and understanding more advanced books While the stories focus on particular blends and word families they are interesting and fun for the children They were always eager to read the stories to me and liked to find "Gus" in all of the books The children even enjoyed re-reading the stories when a sibling started using the curriculum! I would recommend this curriculum to anyone who has a young reader in their family!

The best phonics program kit available! It is so important that students learn how to blend alphabet letters correctly This program helps students to do this! I am a reading specialist and former homeschool mom to our four children I have used this program with children of all abilities and have had success You can make the workbook pages more 'hands on' with a little creativity I am now introducing this program to my grandchildren! Remember reading good books of all types with your children is vital to any program!
September 4, 2012
I have used this program for all four of my children and I think it is the best phonics program available It is well worth the money and everything but the inexpensive workbooks and the prizes is reusable for subsequent learners With the games songs and activities it touches all learning styles and is very memorable It teaches every possible phonics rule and an adult friend who was homeschooled using this program still remembers the songs and rules The program is easy to use and makes the child feel like a success because the colorful readers only use words the child can "sound out" All of my children read above grade level with excellent comprehension and good spelling The only thing we did not enjoy were the long word lists but I did not make my kids test on every word and they still do very well with their spelling I would love everyone to seriously consider using this program
September 2, 2012
The activities for learning letters turned out to be the same three or four worksheet activities for each letter If your child really thrives on knowing what to expect and repetition he/she will love it I heard a lot of "But we already did that Are we going to have to do this for every letter?" That said it improves a lot for level 1 The only problem I had was that the readers included all the same characters illustrated in exactly the same style I guess that provides some continuity but it might add some interest for there to be a bit more variety In the end I ended up branching out For the money I think Phonics Pathways is probably a better bet My kids really did love the CD/songs though
