I would not buy an entire set of Fred books While they are great to get one over an "I hate math" hump they aren't so great for the long haul We started with pre-algebra then algebra and are now doing algebra ii and geometry and these are going to be our last Fred books What is getting to me and even to my daughter to a certain extent is that his sense of humor is getting very very old My daughter used to love narrating the story line now she doesn't even bother It verges on twaddle in fact and my daughter normally has a disappointingly high tolerance for twaddle I'm seeing this particularly in the geometry book I think the series may work for you over time if you like: 1) Snide anti-government humor thrown in every chapter 2) An overall story line that makes Fred the hapless victim of idiots in authority 3) An overall story line that portrays the majority of people as stupid 4) Frequent interruptions of the story line to include extremely improbable events that are designed to be wacky and way out there (and hence funny ha ha) but end up chopping the story line to bits and lend little to helping one relate math to real life (At least that's the result for us) 4) Frequent interruptions of math instruction to include instruction on the analysis of poetry new vocabulary words & etc Which makes me think that he assumes the only curriculum homeschoolers use is math curriculum (not necessarily an incorrect assumption BTW) and that he should "get this in " even when he can't make a realistic connection between the subjects This is beginning to try my patience In the geometry book he has the student write an essay discussing why people might practice "obscurantism" There's another obliquely related essay assignment in a further chapter So for the short haul he's fine although he speeds through his subjects remarkably fast For the long haulwe're done It might work for you if you find the above appealing but the formula is no longer magic for us
