Absolutely the best
I tried Spelling Workout, All About Spelling, Logic of English, and How to Spell before giving in to my sister's nagging to give this a try and she is right--this is absolutely the best out there. It is very simple but the results are what I was looking for--memorizing spelling rules and phonograms while learning new words. The program is neither cumbersome nor dry. Simply dictate spelling words by using the phonograms they are made of helps the student to learn the phonograms in many different contexts. I also dictate the spelling rule(s) that each word follows so that my child hears the the rules being used in real words and sees how they are applied. For an added twist, every Friday I give my child the book and have him give me a spelling test by dictating back the words from the week's list the same way I dictated them to him all week--by phonogram and by telling me to rules that apply to each word. Thus, the student becomes the master.

Great spelling program!
I know this is sold as a reading program, but I've been using it for spelling. I had tried other programs- with a workbook there were tears and I didn't feel the information was being retained; I tried AAS, but it was a flop for me, too many pieces, I dreaded doing it, so it was always the first thing dropped. RLTL is simple. I am actually teaching the spelling, so it's being retained. And it's so straight forward and easy, that it's getting done! I like that I am teaching them the spelling rules, but in context. And no memorizing is required. I simply repeat the rule every time we spell a word that uses it (this is listed for you, so no need for me to remember everything!), and through this repetition my kids are remembering and applying the rules themselves.

Since my kids were already reading, I did not spend time memorizing the phonograms. I went over all 75 once before we started, after that I simply reviewed 10 each day before giving them their spelling words. The author has a free chart of the 75 phonograms available on her website. It has 25 single letter phonograms one side (the letters of the alphabet, except qu) and the 50 multi letter phonograms on the other. We only review the second side.

My oldest son went quickly through level 2 and is now working through level 3. I'm buying level 4 because we will definitely be continuing this next school year. My younger kids I started in level 1.
