Rather nice set
I have really liked this set during the first 8 weeks of school. The text is well written for a first-grader's reading level and the questions at the ends of the lessons make for good discussions. However, I suggest NOT following every page in the home-school teacher's guide. I saw no academic advantage to spending 2-3 days 'introducing' the chapter; skip that and jump to the lessons. I like more discussion time on the reading, questions and workbook, plus I can use the 'saved' time on related field trips. NOTE: practically all of the links they suggest in the textbook are dead. You will have to find your own sources if you want to include any digital aspect.

Is the history portion of this text book factual? Does it teach that Columbus wasn't a good guy and didn't discover America? Does it focus on reality or the fantasy taught in public school?

BEST ANSWER: The grade one book doesn't focus on history much. It is more of an introduction to basic concepts of government, our roles in the world, traditions in different cultures, etc. To my recollection Columbus is not mentioned. There is a section on symbols of our country and a little bit of patriotism, but the history is quite general and it is easy to gloss over portions that you may not want to address at the time. There is a section about school and it respectfully mentions many types of school (including homeschool). Over all, I would consider this more of a general social studies book rather than a history book. We switched to History of the World after using this. I would also think that the material would be more suited for preschool or kindergarten age kids.
