This Language Arts program is one of the best and most gentle programs I have ever used The program is scripted and there is *PLENTY* of explanation of the concepts! I looked high and low I used several well known and not so well known products and never had the kind of explanations I needed It was very frustrating! Then I found First Language Lessons This program blew them all out of the water for me Each Lesson has several exercises in which to teach the concept dictation memory work and plenty of review They are laid out nicely cleanly and without a lot of busy wording with what you are learning or reviewing at the top of each lesson The lessons take about 15 minutes each maybe more or less depending but it averages out If you have a student struggling with grammar then this is the program you need Although the language of the program is geared towards younger students my oldest (14yo) never really had any formal grammar instruction so we started at level 4 and she was halfway through in 2 weeks The teaching was so easy and understandable she was able to learn AND retain! the material So this is really a good program when they need the concepts One of the best things about the program is that it doesn't have an assumption of prior knowledge There is enough review of prior concepts that you can start at a higher level if need be like I did with my daughter I have also used Level 1/2 with my middle child and he is now into Level 3 I do recommend getting both the teacher and student if they are separate one feeds off the other The teacher book has more explanation in detail and some of the student page exercises will something like a list of words You won't know what that list is for without the teacher book Peace Hill does now offer them all in one so you do not have to have two books The price is *really* reasonable considering what you get This is also an open and go program The only thing you will need to remember is which lesson you left off at and that is easily remedied with a sticky note for a book mark! None of my children groan any longer when I drag out the grammar I am enjoying teaching (as well as learning!) with the program!

I bought the workbook but it isn't helpful without the instructor book (unlike the Explode the Code where I haven't used the instructor book).

I cannot afford IEW.... so I was looking for something more affordable, lessons in bite sizes, nicely incremental, with a good trajectory for Language Arts and Writing Comp. Not too easy, but not too bogged down either. I'm schooling 5 boys so I'm looking for something that builds gently and solidly. I've done Easy Grammar, which is pretty great and stress free. I want to give the First Language Lessons and Complete Writer Series a try. We will also be adding in Fix It Grammar for fun. Enjoy!

I've used FLL for several years. I was struggling to find a language arts program we liked after aging out of basic phonics. Rainbow staffer recommended this program to me. My daughter loves how interactive it is. Memorizing lists and poems seems fun to her now.
Stacie S on Sep 9, 2016
I've used her other three books and really enjoy them. Very easy to use.
YASHAMA H on Aug 11, 2016
Scripted teaching helps me. Repetition and rote makes it stick in kids' memory. Clear instructions for successful answers.
Susana F on Aug 10, 2016
Great accompaniment to a classical-based home education. Already had the workbook and the deal on Rainbow Resource for the instructor guide was even better than Amazon :-)

We used Level 3 last year. Great grammar curriculum that includes entire script for teacher & really repeats the basics but mixes in fun (& simple) activities to reinforce parts of speech.

This student and I used First Language Lessons Level 3 last year, and we both enjoyed the to-the-point lessons. No Frills, no busy work.
Lauran C on Jul 1, 2016
This curriculum is wonderful. The lessons are simple and short but very effective.
Wendy S on Jun 22, 2016
My son has been very successful with the first 3 levels. His understanding of grammar is showing up in his writing. This series is teacher intensive. None of the work can be done independently by the student. If you have the time, it will give the student a great foundation in grammar skills.
User on Apr 30, 2016
Next book in the series - we have enjoyed this series up to Level 3!
Michael W on Mar 16, 2016
This book is necessary if you are using the student workbook. Once you start grade 3 you need both books, but it's great to have all the worksheets ready for lessons. I have loved every year of First Language Lessons!
Becky C on Mar 10, 2016
I liked level 3

I am teaching one child. Do I need the instructor's guide and the student workbook?
A shopper on Jul 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. They go hand in hand. The instructor's manual asks the questions that the student answers in their books. It is really the "text" of the two.
What does Bauer suggest to follow Level 4 of FLL?
User on Mar 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: She suggests a few different ones. Rod and Staff has an english series that she suggests. We are going to be using Progressing with Courage which is for sixth grade but they have fifth grade which is probably what you would want. You can't order it online but you can call RR and they can do it over the phone. Bauer also has her own series now too it is Writing with Skill I believe.
Can this be used if the child has not done full before?
A shopper on Dec 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, but I would recommend starting with level 2 or 3 first. My kids are in 4th grade and we use it, but if I was starting this year I would have used 2 or 3. They're all good, but 4 is a little more intense.
