Engaging lessons
I love First Language Lessons. They are an excellent example of Classical education philosophy, but fit in nicely with my eclectic, loosely Charlotte Mason approach. We’ve used FLL from the beginning, but now that we are at the workbook levels, it’s even more engaging for the kids. I appreciate how well-scripted they are. The memorization/repetition really works; the lessons are not too long and the activities can be surprisingly fun & interesting. I found that my 3rd grader was ready for Level 4 and my 1st grader is excelling at Level 3, with less of the optional dictation work.

Wonderful and easy to use.
I have used the first three in the series and have loved how easy they are to use. My two children enjoy the art and poetry and that the lessons are short and clear. Grammar and writing are broken down in beautifully sized chunks that make it easy and quick.

FLL Level 4
Our favorite curriculum. It's scripted, so some might not like it. But for us, it works. My kids soak up everything. I like the memorization and application of the memorized rules.

I have used FLL for 3 of my children, and I think it is an excellent way to teach grammar. The lessons are not long, and the review and optional dictionary and writing exercises are an added bonus. The price is reasonable, too.

Clear and concise
This program is easy to use, very minimal planning required. I don't have time for involved, intricate lesson planning sessions, this works perfectly with my hectic schedule. The nature of the lessons, quality scripted instruction guide and gentle tone of the book make this a pleasure to use. I find the book useful for remediation and new learners.

In sixteen years of homeschooling I have tried many different approaches to teaching my children First Language Lessons are a proven winner in my household The lessons are brief well laid out and require no preparation You just follow the teacher's manual I have used these books with both elementary and middle school students sometimes at the same time I find that memorization comes easier for younger children but that older children grasp the concepts much quicker There is plenty of review built in to aid in long term memorization The use of chant and repetition takes little time but really makes things stick! For older children this series works great as a quick straight forward guide to the nuts and bolts of grammar It provides a strong foundation for other grammar programs For younger children some of the longer lessons can easily be split to use over multiple days Lessons often include optional exercises which involve multiple senses and even body movement The poems given for memorization are enjoyable and easy to learn Having tried many different grammar workbooks where a model is copied but the concepts are easily forgotten I highly recommend First Language Lessons for both their economic and learning value

I have used levels 1-4 with two of my older children, and have used levels 1-3 so far with this one. They enjoy the poetry memorization, and I appreciate the methods used to teach parts of speech, as well as the scripted teacher role--absolutely no prep needed! A good, solid program.

We've been using First Language Lessons, or FLL at my house, for 8 years. It's a solid grammar curriculum. And the scripted lesson means no prep time for me. With 5 kids, that's a must!

I'm excited to have my 9 year old use this workbook because he does a lot of writing in other subjects and this course will clearly and simply help him to inject better grammar into his everyday writing.

We have used levels 1-3 and liked level 1 and 3 very well. We looked else where after Level 2 but decided to give level 3 a try and it was a refreshing change and he likes it even though there is more writing. We look forward to continuing with Level 4 next year!

This is a great curriculum for teaching a solid grammar foundation that includes sentence diagramming. The lessons build at a comfortable pace while still providing a challenge. I highly recommend it.

I cannot afford IEW.... so I was looking for something more affordable, lessons in bite sizes, nicely incremental, with a good trajectory for Language Arts and Writing Comp. Not too easy, but not too bogged down either. I'm schooling 5 boys so I'm looking for something that builds gently and solidly. I've done Easy Grammar, which is pretty great and stress free. I want to give the First Language Lessons and Complete Writer Series a try. We will also be adding in Fix It Grammar for fun. Enjoy!

My son enjoyed this program for english for 3 years, but I felt like he needed something that focused more on paragraph writing skills, so we switched to another curriculum. This year my son has struggled with parts of speech and grammar usage, so we are switching back to First Language Lessons for the rest of the year. It is a great grammar curriculum, and we like the sentence diagramming for continuous review of parts of speech and how words work within sentences.

is there a level five? We have loved this and would like to continue using FLL
User on Jan 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I had the same question at the start of our last school year! All of a sudden I realized I didn't know what writing/grammar books to use next! WTM recommends a few options, but none seem to follow the same method as FLL. I chose Saxon Grammar and Writing 5 to continue our grammar studies. The writing instruction may not be as intensive as Writing with Skill by Susan Wise Bauer. But I didn't feel like my 5th grader and 3rd grader were ready for that level of writing instruction. I'm very happy with the Saxon approach to grammar and writing.

My daughter is going into 5th grade. We have never done a formal grammar program, which level should I start with 3 or 4?
User on Sep 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Level III may be the best place for your child to start. Both books require extensive work diagramming sentences. Level III is a good refresher if she has experience diagramming, but needs practice. If your child is not familiar with the parts of speech and how the diagramming frame looks and works, it will be difficult for her to complete the assignments in level IV. Please make sure you order the parent book and the student book. The parent book contains directed/scripted lesson instruction. This is not a program that she will be able to complete on her own. Both books offer sections of poetry or literature memorization.
I am teaching one child. Do I need the teacher's manual and the student workbook?
A shopper on Jul 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. This program is meant to be a teacher-student interaction/conversation, so there aren't instructions in the student workbook. It might say "exercise 6" and then just a list of words. The teacher manual would say to add an adjective to that list of nouns. Hope this makes sense. Good luck!
I am starting to homeschool my soon 4th grader: which level should I use?
A shopper on May 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Level four is a good place to start especially if your child is familiar with diagramming sentences the classical method. The program reviews parts of speech such as adjectives verbs nouns and prepositions. The program also includes dictation, copy work, and memorization of poetry. The program includes letter writing skills, and dictionary usage skills. It is good for you as a teacher of a new homeschool student because the program is fully scripted in the teacher book. It is entirely consumable on the student side. You will need to order one book per student.
