Both art appreciation and hands-on art projects can be important and exciting elements of teaching art to young elementary age students While many books concentrate on one or the other The Usborne Art Treasury does a terrific job of combining picture study and creative art projects inspired by great art The book written by Rosie Dickins and designed by Nicola Butler also utilizes information and advice from art historians It includes a brief biographical introduction to 22 different artists and reproduces one famous painting from each of those artists After each artist/painting is introduced youll find a project inspired by the painting and style of the artist just presented For instance youll find a brief biography of Vincent Van Gogh and a full color reproduction of his painting Starry Night Then youll find a project called Swirly Landscape which encourages students to paint in a similar style to Van Gogh by using paint thickened with craft glue Students will create a landscape with painted swirls curves and lines scraped in paint with a plastic fork Each artist/project is given two full two-page spreads so young students can really see the artists work and then the sample art for the project Not all of the projects involve painting A variety of mediums and styles are utilized from chalk drawing to collage to mobiles to painting with ink Directions are clearly presented in a step-by-step format easy to follow even if you have no experience teaching art The materials required for the actual projects are almost all ordinary materials youll have on hand in your household or basic inexpensive craft supplies you can easily find At the beginning of the book theres a complete listing of all supplies you need to complete all of the projectsDuring first grade my daughter worked on projects inspired by Van Gogh Monet Degas and OKeeffe The book emphasizes modern artists including Picasso Klee Calder and Pollock and you will also find work here by Hokusai Rousseau Matisse and Whistler The book does a good job of including art from different cultures so youll find projects for African masks inspired by the work of unknown artists and ink paintings inspired by Chinese artist Shen Quan This is one of the best books Ive seen for combining elements of picture study and actual art projects Though the biographies are brief (youll want to build on them through other books and online sources) theyre well-done and the representative paintings are excellent choices The book is colorful bright and well designed In addition to our homeschool (where well continue to use it this year) we recently utilized some of the projects in a local arts camp for children ages 6-14 The Usborne Art Treasury is a definite treasure!

I absolutely love this book! Each artist is introduced with a short biography and a rendition of a piece of their art work Then the students have an opportunity to recreate the art work There are step-by-step instructions for creating the piece of art Very easy to use Very easy to teach from Highly recommended!
