Grammar and Writing 5 Excellent!
I would advice anyone looking for a great grammar and writing program for their 5th grader, to purchase this program. Deanne, a Rainbow consultant, directed me to this program for my 5th grader. After receiving the books, I was very pleased with the format and content of the lessons. It is very user friendly for your student and the teachers guide is clutter free.

Great!
I have to admit that I was a little overwhelmed when the kit first arrived, but as I started looking it over I realized that it was exactly what my struggling child needed. This program is, by far, the best I have ever used. My child has always struggled with Grammar and Writing and now he looks forward to it every day. It is like a whole new world has opened up to him and it finally makes sense. I just wish I would have tried it sooner. I have used Saxon Math for 8 years and love it and this grammar program is the same basic idea of new concepts followed by repetition.

Comprehensive
We love Grammar and Writing 5. Each lesson builds from the last. Every lesson also incorporates the vocabulary words from the previous lessons so that your student is constantly exposed to the new vocabulary. The main book has weekly dictations if you choose to do that. It also has weekly journal topics for your students to write about. My daughter has requested we purchase this set for the next level for the new year. Overall a very comprehensive curriculum with short but detailed lessons.

I switched from Rod and Staff to Saxon Grammar this year I am following a classical model but the Rod and Staff had become very dry and difficult Plus my one son seemed to have a lot of trouble with knowing when to use proper punctuation Punctuation was a complete mystery to him! Since using Saxon Grammar the mystery has unraveled The series will introduce a punctuation concept and then move onto another topic the next few days all the while reviewing the punctuation concept again and again in the practice lessons It is this review that helps the child solidify a newly learned concept In spite of this program being more work for my sons than Rod and Staff or Easy Grammar my boys like it They say it is easy In addition they are diagramming sentences which I feel is an important skill There are some minor problems with the series I find errors in several places in the tests (ex one sentence on the test will have all the punctuation filled in already) and the lessons are only numbered on the first page making it difficult to find the lesson we're on Also the paper the textbook is printed on is cheap Some of the topics suggested for writing are just not very good We pick our own topics But overall it is a good value and we are making the switch

Child can work independently and it is a solid curriculum.

Switched from a more expensive program. Used this one with an older child. Saxon is not as appealing to the eye, but covers all of the essentials of grammar and writing to continue to build a strong foundation, and at a reasonable price.

I read good reviews and agreed after looking at a sample that my daughter could do most of it independently. It also covers all the common core.

My daughter is in 7th grade but struggles with Grammar. Should I get the grade 5?
A shopper on Aug 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I don't think that is necessary. I was VERY pleased with the Saxon grammar course. Just like their solid math curriculum, they continually go back and "quiz"
on previously taught material. For instance, you can be on lesson 23 learning a new concept, but at the end of the lesson they will ask you to diagram or add punctuation to sentences that were learned in lessons 14 and 7. I think the course is challenging, but all of my daughters are strong in their English and Math classes because of the basics they did daily with Saxon curriculum.

Should a teacher have a copy of the student text and student workbook too? Or is the teacher's guide all that is needed to teach the course?
A shopper on Jul 31, 2018
BEST ANSWER: All you need is the teacher’s guide, the student needs the text book and workbook. The teacher’s guide has the answer keys to all of the lessons in the text and workbook. It also has the tests and answer keys to the tests.
I see three books here, one student, one teacher guide, what's the other for?
A shopper on Mar 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: There are two student books - one for grammar and one for writing. The "teacher's guide" is really just an answer key. The student books are written to the student. My daughter reads the book and does the activities independently (for the most part).
How long does each lesson take child to finish?
A shopper on Oct 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: About 30 minutes, some lessons are a little longer.
Is spelling also in this curriculum?
Katie D on Feb 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, spelling is not included but vocabulary is included. There are a couple of vocabulary words each day that are to be copied. There are voc. questions on each lesson practice and each test. 5th grade vocabulary imcluded a lot of geographical terms. 6th grade has more common homophones and words that are often confused with each other (accept and except, lay and lie, ...) I actually prefer Worldly Wise for vocabulary.
Where are the tests? I've looked through both student books, and the teachers book has the answers for the tests. But, where are the tests?
A shopper on Sep 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The test are in the teacher guide starting on page 191.
What year was the second edition published?
A shopper on Jul 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The Grammar and Writing 5th grade was published July 5th of 2013. It's the 2014 school year edition.
