This is highly recommended in multiple HS groups and resources. I'm hoping to see an improvement in my childrens' writing skills by the end of the year.
I have heard many positive comments from others in the home schooling environment regarding this program and I have also used other IEW products with my older children who are now very proficient writers.

My oldest son took an IEW class from local teacher last year, and although he doesn't like writing (struggles due to dyslexia) and didn't particularly enjoy the class, the course he took helped tremendously with his writing skills. We decided to try it on our own this year and continue with the Level B Writing Intensive. I am hoping he will enjoy the DVD's with Mr. Pudewa since the man is very charismatic in his teaching. I will also be starting my younger son on this program this year.

BEST ANSWER:We've marked this as limited availability because IEW is planning to revise the program. We don't yet have an exact time frame but IEW always requires us to send all unsold programs back to them when a new one comes out.

Does this include everything you need for this program. I have a 13 year old 8th grader and also does it give instruction on how to possibly pace out the year?

BEST ANSWER:Yes, it includes everything you need for the program including a 30 week (5 days/week) Course schedule.
If I have this program from the 2000-2001 edition, can I buy the 2015 Student Writing Intensive workbook?

BEST ANSWER:Yes, you certainly can but you may be disappointed in the amount of agreement between the older videos and the new workbook. There will definitely be quite a bit of overlap - the general units have not changed. However, there are some details that are different and you may find it annoying trying to reconcile the two.

BEST ANSWER:We had never used any IEW products before using the Student Writing Intensive. It was no problem for us at all. The Student Writing Intensive was so easy to use and even includes an overview of the material taught in the Teaching Structure and Style course.
We are now huge fans of IEW! We have since used their Fix It! Grammar program and will be buying The Elegant Essay for next year.

BEST ANSWER:It does not include grammar exercises, but grammar terms are used and reinforced within the context of writing. For example, students will learn about various "Dress-ups" for their writing including: -ly adverbs, strong verbs, quality adjectives, etc. There are a few tips included about being able to identify these parts of speech but it's not the foci of the lessons. IEW has a grammar program called "Fix It! Grammar" that does a nice (though non-traditional) job of teaching grammar that complements the writing program.

There is some but it wouldn't be considered a grammar program. The only way that grammar is referred to is in the use of strong verbs, quality adverbs and quality adverbs (called -ly words) through the use of dress-ups that are added to the student's writing throughout the program. I recommend using the publication by the same company, Fix-It Grammar. We are on our second year of Fix-it in conjunction with IEW's writing programs and my kids have really learned and retained grammar for the first time.
There is some grammar, mostly having to do with editing and proof-reading, but it does not include a complete grammar program. IEW does have a grammar program, Fix-It, which is excellent and reinforces many of the stylistic techniques taught in the writing programs.
Can Level B be used by a student who has not completed Level A? What level is recommended for an 8th grade boy who's not fond of writing, but has average ability?

BEST ANSWER:I used Level B with my 6th and 7th grader even though they had not previously completed Level A, one of whom I would describe as having average or slightly below average writing skills. I would say that Level B would be a good fit for your 8th grader! The curriculum starts pretty simple and keeps adding skills, so it didn't feel as though we had missed anything (other than just learning how the curriculum works and getting used to it). My weaker writer really improved a lot with this curriculum!

Yes! I used it with my boys who were in sixth and eighth grade, and neither had done Level A before. The older one had some IEW previous to this, but not via the DVD. I was pleasantly surprised that they were still able to complete the lessons with minimal trouble. Level B was a breeze for the eighth grader and a bit more difficult for the sixth grader, but much of that was because the IEW concepts and format were completely new to him.
Yes, I used level B with a 4th and 8th grader without using level A and it worked just fine. You can easily adapt the lessons to different writing abilities by adjusting what you expect so I think it would work well for an 8th grade reluctant writer. I think the levels mainly differ in the pace and the level of model texts students use, not so much in the skills taught.
You can absolutely use level B without doing A they are the same program the content is just at a higher level . The program teaches the skills of writing , then you can use their other products to pick topics to write about that correlates with what you are interested in or are already learning . Hope this helps :)
Level A is not a prerequisite for Level B. My daughter is in the sixth grade and a reluctant writer. We started with Level B and did not have any problems. It is my understanding that the material is similar between Level A and Level B, but Level A goes slower and is geared for younger students.
Yes, I did this with my 8th grade daughter who is not fond of writing just this past year. It worked wonderfully. I do suggest you watch the teaching videos if possible.
Yes, much of the content is a repeat of Level A with a few additions that are on level with a middle/school aged child. My 4th grader struggled but we got through it.
level B can absolutely be used without having used Level A. As for your question about 8th grade level, you may want to check on Pudwea's site for more specifics.
It is best to choose the level based on the age of the student. Gr8 student can either start with B or C and then move on to the Continuation Level B or C.
does this specific set come with the student material?

BEST ANSWER:Yes! this has the student dvd class and the writing assignments. We pause the DVD as needed to write outlines. Comes with some lists of quality words to add to writing, could add to the list of 'ly', adverbs and like words, but a great place to start. My 6th grade son, who is dysgraphic and did not enjoy writing is now doing amazing. He found the program to be a little slow at first but can now sit down and read and write paragraphs. We liked the program so much we are also doing the mid evil history along with it. This one came with a downloadable resource with word lists, grammar and punctuation, well worth the time to download and is referenced in the student guide. I tried it with my 4th grade girl but she was not ready. She is more interested in creative writing then structure still.

Yes, there is a packet of handouts that will fit into the 3-ring binder. It includes the scope and sequence, suggestions for how much to do each day/week to complete in one year, teacher notes/guides and the actual student handouts and checklists.
Yes, the binder has the resources, stories and outlines for the students. It includes specific lessons plans so you can coordinate with the instruction on the DVDs.
This program is working very well with my 7th grade son. It helps him with his writing and he is actually not minding that he has to write a paragraph, now.
I found this course to be very helpful for my reluctant writer who now feels more confident about his writing. As a result, we have loaned out our dvds and continued with the Continuation Course.
My eighth-grade daughter (who loves writing) and my seventh-grade son (who hates to write) are both enjoying this writing course. They really like the instructor and find his lessons easy-to-follow. We are now halfway through the course and I have seen such an improvement in my kids' writing. I watch the video with them and then grade their work based on the writing techniques they have learned. I am very happy with this program and would highly recommend it (even for reluctant writers).
My students are teenagers who have struggled with dyslexia. This program is so clear for the student. It makes success much easier and carries over to written work in other subjects.
This writing course is so much fun! My 4 kids from grade 5 to grade 10 all love it. It is funny and engaging. We are learning and having fun together all at the same time! I would encourage anyone At almost any age to try their hand at this program. It is absolutely awesome!
Student Writing Intensive vs. Teaching Writing Structure and Style
My friend and I decided to work together to teach this writing course, which has been extensively and highly recommended throughout my 8 years as a homeschool mom. My friend purchased Teaching Writing Structure and Style (TWSS) and I purchased Student Writing Intensive (SWI) because we were confused as to which approach would work better for us. We like them both for different reasons and have chosen to use SWI for now. TWSS is a more principle based approach and puts a lot of work on the teacher. It's higher level in that you don't have article sources for your class nor a scope and sequence outside of general guidelines. We found it more confusing to follow since we have no prior experience with Mr. Pudewa's curriculum. His instructions in TWSS are primarily for the teacher. We think it will be very useful when our kids are older and we have all participated in this writing program for a couple of years. SWI is very much the same in its end goals and overall instruction, but it provides you with an additional classroom format in which Mr. Pudewa is teaching a group of students and you follow along watching the instruction on the DVD with your students. We only watch the DVD once or twice a month, spending the rest of the time writing. We watch the DVD when we're ready to move onto the next step. SWI allows flexibility and extra resources if you want to set the pace faster or slower, depending on the abilities of your students. The students we're teaching are ages 11-14, and because this is our first year the SWI program is extremely helpful. The downside of SWI is that it targets a general age level, so it won't grow indefinitely with the needs of our students. Mr. Pudewa has a great program, so both SWI and TWSS are excellent, but he as an individual is a great promoter of writing and very engaging. The kids benefit greatly from watching him teach. He has a great rapport and connects with children extremely well and provides excellent articles that grab the students' attention. This is why we are using SWI and not TWSS at this time.
A "package" is made up of two or more items sold as a set, often for a reduced price. A listing of individual items that make up a package is provided on the package item's product detail page along with real-time item availability of those items. Any item sold as a package on our website is identified by a unique alpha-numeric item number (such as "APH1AB"). Although packages are sets, items are not physically bundled together.. Because most package items or components are also sold separately and may be components of multiple packages, these items may not have the same inventory availability at any point in time. When you order a package, you are charged one price for all package items. In-stock components will ship according to our normal shipping time. Any backordered components will ship separately as they become available. On your packing slip, package components are picked and packed individually and are identified with the code "PKGCMP" in the price column. The package item number is also listed at the bottom of your packing slip for reference. Please note that if your order ships in multiple boxes, package components may not all be in the same box. Package content is not flexible and cannot be modified.
Packages are returnable if all package items are returned, but individual items purchased as part of a package are returned, they may be refunded for less than the individual purchase price of that item, as they were purchased as part of a discounted package.
