Publisher Description:

A lab kit designed for the Apologia Young Explorer Series - Exploring Creation with Chemistry & Physics. Although many of the items may be easy to find at home or stores close by, this kit makes it a lot easier to do the experiments by having the items gathered together, all in one box ready to use. A complete list of what is provided in the kit, and a list of extra items needed to do the experiment, is included in the kit.

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is present to hear it, does it still make a sound? Exploring this question and countless others is at the heart of this newest course in the Apologia Elementary series. Offering fourteen lessons to be completed at your child's individual pacing, topics covered include a general introduction to chemistry and matter from a Biblical perspective, types of matter, the building blocks of creation, compound chemistry, mixtures, Newton's laws, gravity, forms of energy (including renewable energy), sound, light and spectrum of colors, thermodynamics, electricity, magnetism, simple machines and much more. Hands-on activities abound! Children will make smoke bombs, lava lamps and even create a periodic table from sugar cookies (YUM!). Notebook activities are plentiful in the text book, although an optional notebook is also available to enhance the learning experience. Author Jeannie Fulbright has once again given homeschool families a powerful tool for teaching science to our children. A complete supply list is found at the back of the book, although prepackaged science kits are available for your convenience. ~Deanne

Category Description for Apologia Science (K-6):

This popular elementary science series was originally created when Jeannie Fulbright, author and homeschool mom, was looking for a quality elementary science series that was creation-based using the Charlotte Mason approach. When she didn't find the curriculum she was looking for she decided to create her own. These books use the classical and Charlotte Mason methodology including narration and notebooking to develop critical thinking, logical ordering, retention, and record keeping. The series has since expanded to cover more science topics. New for 2021 is Earth Science, authored by Rachel Yunis, author of Exploring Creation with Advanced Biology.

Since the Charlotte Mason method is employed, every lesson is organized with a narrative, notebook work, an activity, and a project. The student notebook is emphasized in the lessons. Activities and projects bring the lessons to life and use simple household items. While the author's intent is for the parent to read these books to elementary students, a student with a 4th-grade reading level could read these books on their own. The books come from a strong creationist viewpoint, including sections called "Creation Confirmation" and Scripture interwoven throughout the book. Apologia recommends spending an entire year covering each book, taking about two weeks to explore most lessons (some lessons may require more time).

Notebooking Journals were a later - and welcome - addition to the series. As they complete the courses, students were encouraged to compile a notebook to collect and display the information they are learning. The Apologia Notebooking Journals now provide a place for the student to complete every assignment, to record experiments and to display work. Included are weekly lesson plans, templates for recording fascinating facts and assignments, and scripture copywork in both print and cursive models. In addition to full-color Miniature Books (for recording facts and information and pasting directly into the notebook), there are optional ideas (Take it Further in Astronomy; Dig in Deeper in Botany; Fly Higher in Zoology, etc.) for lots of additional activities, projects, experiments, books or videos, all of which correlate with specific lessons in each course. Along these lines, the Personal Person project in both of the Anatomy notebooks is special providing clear vinyl overlays of each body system. Be prepared to cut these out, though.

Junior Notebooking Journals are a simplified version of the orignal Notebooking Journals and require less handwriting but have the same reinforcing activities. These books include coloring pages, project pages, and cut and fold miniature books (same ones as in the version for older students). There is space for notebooking assignments (more drawings, no questions to answer) and scripture copywork (shorter verses to copy either in manuscript or in beginning cursive). Biblical quotations are from the NASB, KJV, NIV or NKJV.

To complete the books all you will need to provide is scissors, glue, colored pencils, a stapler, and a few brass fasteners. There are plenty of activity options in the journals, but keep in mind that based on your student, you may not want to complete every activity. Work can be tailored to each student by simply tearing out unwanted pages from the spiral-bound book. Serving both as a uniquely expressed record of the student's work and as a prized reminder of acquired knowledge, these books will become a homeschooling heirloom.

For convenience, we now offer either Advantage Sets or SuperSets. Advantage Sets include the textbook and either the Junior or original Notebooking Journal. SuperSets include the text, the MP3 Audiobook CD and either the Junior or the original Notebooking Journal.

We also offer lab kits from Nature's Workshop for the elementary courses. Kits contain most of the materials for the experiments, and are conveniently packaged by lesson in the corresponding book (sold separately). There are still a few items you will need from around your house, but with these kits the list becomes extremely short. ~ Janice / Jerry

Category Description for Apologia Science:

Apologia Science courses are written from a Biblical worldview with the homeschool in mind. At the elementary level, courses follow a Charlotte Mason-inspired methodology, with lessons organized around narration, notebooking exercises and hands-on activities or projects. Children at different ages can use these together, learning at their own level. Each course is designed to be teacher-student interactive, so teacher involvement is fairly high at this level. At the junior high and high school levels, science courses are more traditional in nature, with the textbook written to the student. Teacher involvement time at this level is much less than at the elementary level. Textbooks contain student reading, lab instructions, "On Your Own" questions and Study Guide questions. A Solutions Manual provides the answers to these and the test questions. Lab kits are available separately for both the elementary and upper-level science courses which include most of the harder to find items you will need.

Items listed in this section tend to be complete science programs with a teacher and student component, requiring few supplements besides science supplies.

The Nature's Workshop kits are fantastic. Having nearly everything needed is so much better than hunting for necessary supplies or substitutes - and ensures that we actually complete the labs!
User on May 27, 2020
I have found in the past that a lot of the experiments don't get done if I don't have all of the materials right away. With this being Chemistry, I really wanted to make sure we do the experiments. A friend recommended this to me as the easiest kit to work with. Considering it covers science experiments for the entire school year, I've decided it's worth the investment!

I taught this curriculum for the first time in a co op last year and wasn't sure whether I should try to come up with materials or buy the kit. I bought the kit and was SUPER thankful to have all that work done for me. Kit materials were good, thorough, very organized and all but one experiment worked. We had some battery issues with the completing a circuit experiment

Are there allergens in this kit like peanut m & m’s? Those are in the same kit from a different supplier. If there are peanuts in this kit are they individually wrapped to not contaminate other items?
A shopper on Jul 1, 2023
BEST ANSWER: Check on the lab supplies list in the book and see if they're listed, or go to Nature's Workshop and call them and ask. They're helpful, and are the ones that pack each kit, so they would know for sure. It has been a couple years since we did it, and I don't remember either (especially not peanuts).
Is this for the 3rd edition of the Apologia Chemistry and Physics?
A shopper on Nov 26, 2020
BEST ANSWER: This kit is for the Elementary Chemistry and Physics from Apologia. This elementary course from Apologia is only in its first edition. It sounds like you may be thinking of the high school level Chemistry course which is in a 3rd edition. This kit will not work with the high school course.
Would this kit have any problems being shipped to Australia?
A shopper on Jan 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: We are able to ship this kit to Australia. We aren't responsible for items that Australian customs wil not accept or let enter the country.
What is not included in the kit that I would need? Where can I have a comprehensive list of what's exactly in the kit?
A shopper on Jul 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Kits always include everything you need except perishable food items, plants, and water.I am not sure where you would find a comprehensive list (without me linking to another company after I google to track it down), but we have used many Apologia kits. The only things we have literally had to purchase it provide on our own were food items, plants for Botany, and liquids like soda and water. The full kits include all else down to paper plates, foil, baking soda as examples. They even come with crayons and pencils.I like the kits as they increases our success of actually completing experiments because I never have to track down anything other than what I mentioned which are easily found in the pantry, fridge, or next grocery store trip. I hope this helps!
What specific items will you still need to get?
Rheea on Feb 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It has been a while since we used it but I don't recall needing anything special at all. Maybe something laying around the house. Honestly, as far as I recall it had everything. It was wonderful. No fuss no muss.
Does the kit come with a lesson book and instructions on how to do the experiments?
User on Nov 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, you must order the textbook separately which contains the instructions for the lab experiments
We are Americans posted overseas. Is there anything in this kit that would keep it from being shipped to us? For example, do the liquids combine to being over 16 ounces total? Are the batteries lithium batteries?
A shopper on Nov 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Per the supplier: The batteries are not lithium, however, the fluids in the kit are over 16 oz. Some of them could be taken out of the kit before it is shipped if they are things the recipient could replace.
Is this kit the materials needed for the experiment at the back of the lesson or also for the Try This experiments throughout each lesson?
A shopper on Jun 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The materials included are for all the experiments in the book including the Try This experiments. There are lots of items included available in your home but you don't have to spend any time collecting them ahead of time. I found this kit extremely helpful.
Is this kit worth it to get for a 1st grader? I gave her all the options for science to study next year and she really wanted to do chemistry. I am wondering if it would be better suited for when she is older.
User on Jun 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It depends on what your goal is for science at this age. I think the reading will be beyond her comprehension, but the experiments are very exciting. My 5 year old wandered off while my older kids listened to the lesson with me but she always made sure she was in the thick of it for the experiments and hands-on activities.
Do I need more than 1 kit for 2 children? Is it worth the cost for this kit?
faithmama on Apr 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You do not need to order more than 1 kit. My two worked on everything together. They took turns pouring and mixing etc. There were a few things that they each did their own, but it was with materials I had on hand. The cost was worth every penny to me. Too many times my intentions have been to do specific experiments but I fell short on getting the appropriate materials. It was awesome the way the company has everything separated into lessons. Grab a lesson bag and go. The things that were not included were very easy for me to get.

Such a time saver
I love this kit. I thought it seemed a little spendy, but ordered it because with 3 kids in different grades, I was always missing something for science. The fact that everything is labelled in a bag by chapter is brilliant. I would highly recommend this. Your kids will get their labs done without having to tear the house apart looking for some random object or a trip to the store and you will keep your sanity! It's money well spent...

great kit
Has everything I need. I got the complete kit for Astronomy and was able to do all of the experiments. Then for botany I tried to cheap out and get a smaller kit. Well, the result was that we didn't do all of the experiments because we didn't have everything on hand. Going back to the full kit is expensive, but worth it!

Apologia Elementary Chemistry and Physics Lab kit
So far I've only completed Lesson 1, but it seems very convenient and organized. The graduated cylinder from Lesson 1 is a bit smaller and narrower than I expected, however the goggles from the kit appear sturdy.
