This book has to be one of my all time favorite books If you want to be a gardener homesteader farmer or cook this book has all the information one would need to do so So many people are looking to become a little bit more independent in their lifestyles growing their own food spinning their own wool or making needed things from scratch If that sounds like you then Carla Emery has included all you need to know in this bookThis book is enormous It is almost as big as the Rainbow Resource catalog! Each page is jam packed with all sorts of information The book was written over a period of over thirty years by a the ultimate "pioneer woman" Not only did Carla write about farm life she actually lived most of the topics she wrote about The information is practical time-tested and easy to understand She also writes in an entertaining conversational styleThere are eleven chapters in the book The first chapter covers odds and ends one might need to know about living in the country She addresses purchasing land septic tanks and even tells how to deliver a baby at home if needed If I lived a hundred miles from anywhere I'd grab this book as Carla coaches her readers on simple living cooking on a woodburning stove and keeping yourself and your children warm and healthy in severe weatherThe next section talks about growing things Every food plant you could imagine is included here Grains grasses vegetables herbs and spices fruits berries whateverCarla tells how best to grow them preserve them and cook with them She includes oodles of recipes for almost every food substance So if you grow an abundance of say tomatoes it is so easy to find a variety of uses for themThe next section is about animals Not only does Carla tell you about the typical farm animals of chickens cows sheep goats and horses she also has quite a bit on information on wild game as well For all of these animals she tells how best to feed shelter and doctor them Then she writes of how to butcher them and use their byproducts to survive Home dairying is covered as well as keeping honeybees! If your Great Grandma had written down all the things she knew about country life it would probably look a whole lot like this book This book is an excellent value for the money While there are no color illustrations there are diagrams where needed and it is very well organized The index in the back is a valuable tool to take you just to the page you need One really neat feature about this book is that there are many internet links included so that you can find more information easily online if neededMy husband and I reach for this book when we have a question about growing things or just to fill the time on a rainy day There is so much to learn in between its two covers If you are a rural farmer homesteader a suburban gardener or an apartment dwelling cook this book has lots of fun and useful information for you
