We have had great experiences with Song School Latin, also from Classical Academic Press, and we normally use IEW and wanted to try something different for next year. I am planning on using this program along with Seton English 4 for my oldest son as I am not sure how much they focus on usage, grammar and mechanics in this program, and Seton does a great job with that content.

Needed a curriculum that I could use to support my daughters writing. She struggles to understand how to come up with ideas. She is in the public school system and the lack of modeling seems to be prevalent in the system. When she gets home with an assignment I'm struggling to find something quick to demonstrate how to write with good modeling. We will use this to teach writing at home for a better foundation instead of just using a quick fix. Her tutor will also piggy back the curriculum.

This is a required text for my student but thought the CD would be helpful and had great value.

Have heard good things about this program. My child and I are getting bored with Writing with Ease, so thought we would give this a try.

I believe it will be a good continuation of a Classical Writing program that will work for my child.

I was looking for a writing curriculum that would instruct step-by-step and included rhetoric. I chose this more because I am excited about the upper levels of this curriculum more than this specific one.

I think this is a very good classical approach to teaching writing.

Great reviews and samples. W&R seems to offer lovely, rich, yet gentle instruction which I hope will turn my 11 year-old son's feelings toward writing. I have high hopes!

This was recommended by other homeschool moms. I'm looking for something a little more fun than Writing with Ease, and that incorporates more writing.

Would this work with a first grader who is reading early chapter books (frog and toad, Henry And Mudge)? It will be for her older sister but I am wondering if having her sit in would be good.

BEST ANSWER: This would be too hard unless your student had very strong writing skills. My First graders have always been at the point where they still need to practice their handwriting, and haven't grasped the concepts of capitol letters and punctuation. The problem solving and reasoning or logic would also probably be too much for a first grader.

That being said, a first grader would probably really enjoy orally working through this with a sibling. The stories are very enjoyable, and there is a lot of "telling back" and fun word play that they would enjoy. This would also make it that much easier when they did get to the point where they were actually doing the writing in a year or two.

I have tried quite a few writing products, and this has by far been the most engaging for my reluctant writers. (My kids are all boys, getting them to sit still or focus is a challenge.) Expense wise is it also very reasonable. I have found you don't need the CD with the readings because reading the stories together is just a natural part of doing the work together with my children.
