This package includes the following items:

Category Description for Saxon Math 5/4 (3rd Ed.):

For use by fourth graders who have completed Math 3 or who are doing well in math, or for average fifth graders. Covers review of 4 basic math functions, estimating, 2- and 3-digit computation, decimals, fractions, rudimentary geometry, word problems. 3rd edition.

Category Description for Saxon Middle School Programs:

Featuring the same methodology as previous editions plus enhanced mathematical content, Homeschool Kits contain a non-consumable student edition textbook, consumable tests and worksheets for one student, and a solutions manual. All three components of the Homeschool Kit come softbound. The Student Edition Text uses a two-color page layout, as opposed to the black and white pages of prior editions. Tests and Worksheets include a significant amount of fact drill practice, course tests, as well as various forms for recording student progress. Solutions Manual contains solutions to all problems in the text and tests.

Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

It was highly recommended by a friend if want to keep a traditional homeschool curriculum... since in my case my child was in a private school. It is my first time homeshooling.

Have used Saxon in the past for all our students, but missing this particular kit since we had a 9-year gap between students and the books disappeared.

We use Saxon already and love how true to life it is as well as easy to use and adaptable!

This will be our 3rd year using Saxon Math. We understand its structure and can follow the rhythm of the book easily. I am ordering the CD-ROM this year for my 5th grade boy because he is a VERY strong audio learner and I'm hoping this will make him even stronger in math. We'll see how it goes.

We love Saxon Math. Repeats often so they can get the concept. This is my first year with the CD ROMS but I have a friend that loves them.

I was recommended by a friend to Saxon, and it has a very good rating with homeschooling parents. My daughter is 4th grade currently and completed the Saxon intermediate 3 this past year. This was our first experience with Saxon and was very pleased with the results. I like the idea that it reinforces the material already learned and builds upon that knowledge to introduce new concepts. Looking forward to working with the 5/4 this year.

Saxon Math is a great curriculum for my daughter, so we will continue to progress through it to the next level.

I chose this as the price point was better when purchasing the kit and CDs together, versus separately.

What is the difference between Saxon 5/4 and Saxon Intermediate 5?
Pamela on Oct 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Saxon Math 5/4 corresponds to Math Intermediate 4 while Saxon Math 6/5 corresponds to Math Intermediate 5.

Math 5/4 and Math Intermediate 4 as well as Math 6/5 and Math Intermediate 5 are similar in terms of scope and sequence and in terms of general format. All have 120 Lessons plus 12 Investigations.

Both provide Saxon’s incremental spiral approach plus lots of review and repetition. Intermediate goes more into detail with the 4-step problem-solving process: 1) understand the problem, 2) devise a plan, 3) carry out the plan, and 4) look back (evaluate).

Manipulatives are referenced throughout MI-4 and MI-5 (unlike 5/4 and 6/5), but they are optional. MI-4 and MI-5 are hardcover while 5/4 and 6/5 are softcover. MI-4 and MI-5 are topically aligned to Common Core while technically 5/4 and 6/5 are not.

Most of the differences in the two editions are in the area of supplementals available. Math 5/4 has Saxon Teacher support – as well as DIVE. MI-4 and MI-5 have some supplementary products which can be helpful in certain situations - Written Practice Workbook (consumable worksheets of the Written Practice problems) and the Adaptations Student Workbook (consumable workbook containing adapted versions of the practice problems from the student textbook).

MI-4 and MI-5 also have “Early Finisher Problems” which are enrichment problems that have a real world connection.
do I need the teacher lesson and test cd for 5/4 or just the test, lesson and solution manuals?
A shopper on Nov 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Honestly, I don’t think you need the cd. I bought the cd for 5/4 and for 6/7. I have only used the cd one time when we needed clarification, but, it did not give clarification. The cd follows almost word for word of the lesson and goes over every example problem. It does not give any more explanation than the book. The only time I think you may want the cd is if your child does better watching and listening than reading on their own. Otherwise if you ever need more explanation just go to khan academy.
