Publisher Description:

Did you ever believe there could be a Latin program that would match the energy, developmental level, and fun-loving nature of your youngest students? Song School Latin does just that. Lessons are peppered with songs, enjoyable vocabulary, illustrations, handwriting practice, stories, games, and engaging activities, providing students with a vocabulary-based introduction to the language. Children will love learning Latin! Full program includes:

  • Song School Latin Book 1 (consumable student edition) This interactive workbook, accompanied by a CD featuring 30 songs and chants, is filled with fun activities to set young students on a course to loving Latin! The 31 weekly lessons, including review chapters, will delight students as they learn 100+ everyday vocabulary words in Latin.
  • Song School Latin Book 1 Teacher’s Edition This teacher’s edition includes the full content of the Song School Latin Book 1 student edition, as well as extra reproducible activity pages for each chapter, answer keys, additional teacher’s notes, and fun ideas for interactive classroom activities.
  • Latin Monkey Match Flashcard Game These cards feature all the vocabulary from Song School Latin Book 1. In groups or individually, students can play Memory or Go Fish by collecting Latin and English matches. Cards can also be used as flash cards for extra practice. Each card lists the corresponding chapter number from Song School Latin Book 1.

Q: Can I purchase a second student edition without the CD for my other students/children?

A: Unfortunately, no. Because we print such large quantities of the student edition with the CD included, we would actually have to charge more for a version without a CD if we did a small print run.

Category Description for Song School Latin (Gr. K-3):

If you expect a program with this name to be a gentle auditory introduction to Latin, you’ve nailed it! But be sure to note that this program is also well-constructed, easy-to-use, and FUN. After all, you have a monkey illustrating each chapter, familiar tunes introducing the vocabulary, understandable explanations (i.e. Latin nouns are grouped into five families, or declensions), and just the right amount of practice. What more could you ask for as a painless way to infuse some Latin into your young child’s day? Each chapter is a week’s worth of instruction. New vocabulary words are introduced and featured in a song. These songs are primarily English with appropriate words in Latin and are often set to familiar tunes. (i.e. If you’re happy and you know it, touch your nose – na-res!) The words to each song are printed both in the student text and the teacher’s book along with the specific CD track where the song is found. Actually, I should say “tracks” because each song and its Latin words are presented in two tracks – one with classical pronunciation and one with ecclesiastical. A two-page guide found in both the teacher and student books delineates the distinctions between the two pronunciations and concludes “ultimately the decision (about which to use) is not a significant one.”

Each chapter has a short lesson (grammar) which includes an historical linguistic tidbit as well as a famous Latin saying the student is to memorize. Some chapters include a story which intersperses Latin words with the English. Then it’s up to the student to Practice Your Latin (writing the words), Show What You Know (brief vocabulary identification), Grow Your English (English words with Latin roots), and Review Words (past vocabulary words). Often a cut-and-paste (or some other sort of hands-on activity) is included for reinforcement. Review chapters are included regularly. The Student Book is a worktext which includes the song CD. The Teacher’s Edition is identical to the Student book (but no CD) with answers filled in and teacher’s notes inserted as shaded boxes. While most moms/teachers will be able to figure out the correct answers, the notes and additional activities in the Teacher’s book flesh out the course. DVDs for each course contain 24 ten-minute episodes – one for each lesson in the book covering new material. Each episode features vocabulary practice (ecclesiastical and classical pronunciations), grammar lessons, and coverage of derivatives. Each DVD also features a bilingual story featuring Simeon the monkey, providing another opportunity to use the vocabulary from the lesson. The CD is now available separately and includes the same tracks as those found on the CD in the Student Book. For those who aren’t ready to commit to a Latin curriculum, the CD introduces cute and kid-friendly songs that can be learned by all. There are no printed words with the CD; those are included in the student and teacher books.

For extra vocabulary practice, consider the Latin Monkey Match Flashcard Game. This flashcard set contains over 100 Latin words (with the English translation appearing in small upside down type); use this set to play the suggested games, or simply use them as traditional flashcards. This program is designed as an introduction to Latin for Children but could be used as a stand-alone, get-acquainted-with-Latin experience. ~ Janice

My kids ask to do this program
Hi, I have ages 6, 10 & 13 and they all like it. It is supposed to be for younger kids but I used this because this is our first exposure to Latin. I found that there's a component for all ages. My youngest kids love the songs and the stories and my oldest appreciates learning how different words in English and other languages derive from Latin. We are still new to this, but they are remembering what we have learned so far.

"Hey Dad what's 'sella' in Latin?"I don't know son I only speak igpay atinlay Pig Latin What is 'sella'?"You're sitting on it " giggled my sonThus went the daily conversation between my husband and sons at the supper table My two boys would learn a new Latin word or phrase using Song School Latin during the day and would proceed to stump their 'pater' at the 'mensa' each evening Having never studied Latin myself I was somewhat skeptical to tackle it with two boys ages 5 and 7 However Song School Latin was the highlight of our year We learned through clever songs over 100 Latin words and phrases Each lesson began with a catchy song or chant followed by workbook pages to practice the new words Lesson pages included the song lyrics new Latin words practice writing the Latin vocabulary matching Latin to English drawing and labeling new words and simply filling in the English or Latin equivalent This was just enough for the ages of my boys but we found the Latin Monkey Match cards to really cement our new language skills With color-coded cards for each 6-8 weeks of lessons it was simple to pull out only the cards we had learned We were able to play Memory Old Maid and Go Fish drill vocabulary or play a new game we made up 'Ventus' (Meaning 'wind' in Latin if you drew the 'ventus' card all of the cards you had accumulated blew away) Even my older children learned some Latin by listening to the CD and joining in our Monkey Match games The teacher guide provides answers to the student book along with creative ways to learn the vocabulary For example after learning the parts of the body students were encouraged trace one another on a large sheet of paper and label each body part in Latin This life-size lesson hung in my boys' room for weeks Overall Song School Latin was the perfect introduction to learning Latin and creating fun memories with my children
