Publisher Description:

Did you ever believe there could be a Latin program that would match the energy, developmental level, and fun-loving nature of your youngest students? Song School Latin does just that. Lessons are peppered with songs, enjoyable vocabulary, illustrations, handwriting practice, stories, games, and engaging activities, providing students with a vocabulary-based introduction to the language. Children will love learning Latin! Full program includes:

  • Song School Latin Book 1 (consumable student edition) This interactive workbook, accompanied by a CD featuring 30 songs and chants, is filled with fun activities to set young students on a course to loving Latin! The 31 weekly lessons, including review chapters, will delight students as they learn 100+ everyday vocabulary words in Latin.
  • Song School Latin Book 1 Teacher’s Edition This teacher’s edition includes the full content of the Song School Latin Book 1 student edition, as well as extra reproducible activity pages for each chapter, answer keys, additional teacher’s notes, and fun ideas for interactive classroom activities.
  • Song School Latin Book 1 Streaming Video (or 3-DVD Set) A total of 24 episodes feature a lively magistra (teacher) who narrates the vocabulary practice, simple grammar lessons, and derivative training. Simeon the Monkey features vocabulary words in his animated story. There is also an animated "Derivative River" that highlights the way in which Latin words have come into various languages. The streaming option provides the convenience of instant access, as well as desktop, smart TV, and mobile viewing capabilities. Streaming access lasts for the life of the product.
  • Streaming video purchase includes games, videos, and other activities that will keep students engaged and will help further reinforce their new Latin skills.

    Streaming supplemental content includes:

    • Flash Dash (Game): This fast-paced game will challenge students’ knowledge of vocabulary as they progress through the book, unit by unit.
    • Jungle Jump (Game): Jungle Jump is another fun way to practice the Song School Latin 1 vocabulary. Play as Simeon and jump your way through the jungles collecting the correct translation to the Latin words!
    • Jungle Journey Board Game (PDF Game): Print your own game and play it with the family! A seven-board game that allows for traditional table-top play. Various rule-sets allows for different age groups to play at the same time.
    • Coloring Pages & Lapbooks: Print-outs for every vocabulary word allowing for coloring-fun all while practicing your Latin!
    • More Videos: Additional animated stories featuring the vocabulary words from the Song School Latin curriculum.
  • Latin Monkey Match Flashcard Game These cards feature all the vocabulary from Song School Latin Book 1. In groups or individually, students can play Memory or Go Fish by collecting Latin and English matches. Cards can also be used as flash cards for extra practice. Each card lists the corresponding chapter number from Song School Latin Book 1.

Q: Can I purchase a second student edition without the CD for my other students/children?

A: Unfortunately, no. Because we print such large quantities of the student edition with the CD included, we would actually have to charge more for a version without a CD if we did a small print run.

Category Description for Song School Latin (Gr. K-3):

If you expect a program with this name to be a gentle auditory introduction to Latin, you’ve nailed it! But be sure to note that this program is also well-constructed, easy-to-use, and FUN. After all, you have a monkey illustrating each chapter, familiar tunes introducing the vocabulary, understandable explanations (i.e. Latin nouns are grouped into five families, or declensions), and just the right amount of practice. What more could you ask for as a painless way to infuse some Latin into your young child’s day? Each chapter is a week’s worth of instruction. New vocabulary words are introduced and featured in a song. These songs are primarily English with appropriate words in Latin and are often set to familiar tunes. (i.e. If you’re happy and you know it, touch your nose – na-res!) The words to each song are printed both in the student text and the teacher’s book along with the specific CD track where the song is found. Actually, I should say “tracks” because each song and its Latin words are presented in two tracks – one with classical pronunciation and one with ecclesiastical. A two-page guide found in both the teacher and student books delineates the distinctions between the two pronunciations and concludes “ultimately the decision (about which to use) is not a significant one.”

Each chapter has a short lesson (grammar) which includes an historical linguistic tidbit as well as a famous Latin saying the student is to memorize. Some chapters include a story which intersperses Latin words with the English. Then it’s up to the student to Practice Your Latin (writing the words), Show What You Know (brief vocabulary identification), Grow Your English (English words with Latin roots), and Review Words (past vocabulary words). Often a cut-and-paste (or some other sort of hands-on activity) is included for reinforcement. Review chapters are included regularly. The Student Book is a worktext which includes the song CD. The Teacher’s Edition is identical to the Student book (but no CD) with answers filled in and teacher’s notes inserted as shaded boxes. While most moms/teachers will be able to figure out the correct answers, the notes and additional activities in the Teacher’s book flesh out the course. DVDs for each course contain 24 ten-minute episodes – one for each lesson in the book covering new material. Each episode features vocabulary practice (ecclesiastical and classical pronunciations), grammar lessons, and coverage of derivatives. Each DVD also features a bilingual story featuring Simeon the monkey, providing another opportunity to use the vocabulary from the lesson. The CD is now available separately and includes the same tracks as those found on the CD in the Student Book. For those who aren’t ready to commit to a Latin curriculum, the CD introduces cute and kid-friendly songs that can be learned by all. There are no printed words with the CD; those are included in the student and teacher books.

For extra vocabulary practice, consider the Latin Monkey Match Flashcard Game. This flashcard set contains over 100 Latin words (with the English translation appearing in small upside down type); use this set to play the suggested games, or simply use them as traditional flashcards. This program is designed as an introduction to Latin for Children but could be used as a stand-alone, get-acquainted-with-Latin experience. ~ Janice

A friend recommended it. After leafing through it, I felt it was user friendly, simple, and appealing for young folks, while giving a good start to understanding Latin. I appreciate that it goes over both classical and ecclesiastical pronunciation. Also, the author presents a gentle approach in the DVD (from a cursory peek at it). And topping it off, the package comes with a flash card game! :)

Is there streaming video available instead of dvd?
Debbie on Apr 25, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Yes, but it is only available from the publisher's website - Classical Academic Press.
Is his too young for an eight year old just starting Latin?
Debbie on Apr 16, 2021
BEST ANSWER: My 8 year old son enjoyed all parts of the DVD and the flash card game set. He didn’t care for the CD songs, so we didn’t play it much. We zipped through the whole book over the summer as a supplement to our foundations memory work in CC, and this was very fun for a first introduction. Playing GO FISH with the memory cards was his favorite and a fun way to practice Latin vocabulary through the summer.
How many days/week do you teach this, and how long does it take each time?
A shopper on Feb 11, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Twice a week, 30-45 minutes for each session. We watch the video, sing the songs, and complete half the workbook during each session. Also, we listen to the song cd in the car while driving around town. My kids (age 8 and 5) enjoy this course; we have completed Song School Latin 1 and are half way through course 2.

Not as nice as I was expecting . . .
My first gripe is that the "teacher's edition" is an answer key--no ideas for games or lessons or anything. Second is that the video lessons have only a very short story using the new words/phrases only once or twice. Cute story, partly animated, keeps the kids' attention, but the story is a very short part of the video. First a woman talks and tells about the new words--that part is fine, then the little story, but then probably a third of the video is a man telling about words above the heads of my 1st-3rd graders--this part is much more of just a lecture. And then the little monkey rides away in a boat with words labeled all around him--but they are not pronounced. If you don't already know Latin (I don't) then you have to look them all up to find out for sure how to say them, because the book only says to listen to the cd rather than giving us the rules (perhaps the rules are too hard, but we need to know all the words in the curriculum at least). I have heard that there is more content if you buy the rights to stream video rather than cds, but I didn't want to depend on my iffy internet connection every time I needed the video; I wish they would have just put it all on the cds. I haven't used the cards yet because we are just starting, but they are very small, about double the size of a business card. Much smaller than I was expecting (I expected them to be like most flashcards or playing card size at least, I would have thought). I am teaching this at a homeschool co-op, so my needs for the cards are a bit different than with one student at home. Either way, I wish the cards came in a box rather than just with a rubber band. For this price, and with the reviews I read, I expected more. It's still a good program, but skip the teacher book. I sure wish they would re-do the videos to have double the story (that's the best way for the kids to learn the new words) rather than a lecture. I can give the kids a lecture and they they don't like it any more with the guy on the video doing it. Would be good for older kids--but the book is clearly geared to the younger kids.

Not secular
I mistakenly ordered this thinking it was a secular resource. It is not. The songs are cute, but the lessons in the student book aren't super helpful for reinforcing the vocabulary and the video lessons are religious in nature.

I have not started using it but so far I love the format. Lessons aren’t super long they incorporate a video, music, and games to teach each lesson so multiple ways for the child to engage. I am really excited to use it.

Excellent, and easy!
My 8yr old loves this curriculum. She begs to do it early in the day because it's one of her favorite subjects. I was afraid the songs would be too young for her taste, but she loves them. They are catchy and stick in your head. When you can't remember a word it's quite easy to recall the song and figure it out. The course is easy to teach with the DVDs and CD even if you have no Latin experience (I do not). We will continue with this Latin curriculum. I recommend the deluxe set with the cards, DVDs, CD, and books. They all tie together nicely and are all useful.

Really fun!!!
This has been a really fun course! A friend and I swap subjects. I teach this to her kids and mine one day a week. We get together to watch the DVD sing the songs and do the matching game. Then the kids do their own work books throughout the week. It has been so fun and we enjoy working at our own pace.
