Category Description for Science in the Beginning:

After much speculation and anticipation, Dr. Jay Wile's new elementary Science curriculum is now available, and, dare I say, it was worth the wait! For those unaware, Dr. Jay Wile is the author of the Jr. and Sr. High Apologia Science curriculum which was specifically designed for homeschool family use and he continues in the same vein with this newest offering.

Designed to be used every other day, this one year curriculum contains 6 units, one for each of the days of creation. Each unit includes 12 foundational lessons and 3 challenge lessons, a total of 90 lessons altogether, giving students an in-depth look at science through the lens of creation. While the challenge lessons may be considered optional if you have a science-resistant child, you will find they add depth and enjoyment to the subject being studied.

With the firm belief that children of all elementary ages can learn together, each lesson offers a hands-on activity or experiment (parental supervision required), three pages of reading and review assignments subdivided into three levels: Younger, Older and Oldest. Wisely, Dr. Jay has given you, the parent, the discretion to select the best level for your student(s), making this practical and easy to use with varied ages and abilities. Let me give you an example of the questions and how their level of difficulty increases from lesson 9, Day 1 of Creation: Younger Students: Where does your eye's lens focus the light that passes through it? What do the rods and the cones do in the eye? Older Students: Make your own drawing of the eye, based on the one you see on pg. 25. Label the cornea, lens, retina, and optic nerve. Make a note that the rods and cones can be found on the retina. Also, point out in the drawing where the blind spot is, and explain why it is a blind spot. Oldest Students: Do what the older students are doing. In addition, I want you to predict what would happen if I changed the instructions in the experiment. Suppose I asked you to hold the book so the red squares are just to the left of your nose. Then, suppose I told you to close your right eye and look at the red and blue circles with your left eye. Then, suppose I asked you to bring the book closer and closer to your face. Can you predict what you would eventually see? Write down your predication and then see if it was correct by actually doing the experiment that way.

The Hands-on Activities or Experiments primarily use common household items, but please note that we are working to offer a prepackaged kit for your convenience, please check online or call customer service to see if it is available. Supply lists by unit and "Materials that may take some time to acquire" are conveniently located in the front of the text, making it easy to secure items ahead of time. Curious about what materials may "take some time to acquire?" Here is a sampling of the above designated items: iodine, medicine dropper, Root Kill, Binoculars, compact fluorescent light bulb, etc. - things that are easy to buy, but you don't necessarily have on hand.

While the hard-cover textbook contains all of the necessary instruction, the author has provided parents with a "Helps & Hints" soft-cover book which offers experiment and activity notes, answers to all three levels of questions and optional tests (with answers) which are reproducible for family use. The author recommends students keep notebooks of activities/experiments and lesson questions to evaluate learning, but has graciously provided optional tests for the families who want to expose older children to test taking or those who like the test taking option for children of all ages.

At this point, you may wonder how this compares to the Elementary Apologia curriculum. At first glance, the main difference is the scope of topics. All science topics are presented in this one book, whereas the Apologia Elementary courses study a single topic in-depth. The format of Science in the Beginning is most similar to the upper level Apologia texts with step by step experiment instructions and lesson reviews. Fully illustrated graphics are plentiful but not as bountiful as in the Apologia elementary. Also noteworthy, each lesson in this book contains 3 pages of textual reading making it less than the average daily readings in the elementary Apologia courses.

This is a well done course that provides younger children an exceptional introduction to science topics along with offering your budding Jr. High student an excellent preparation for the higher level sciences. Set contains the hardcover Textbook and the Helps & Hints, or the books are available separately. ~ Deanne

Category Description for Science in History by Dr. Jay Wile:

After much speculation and anticipation, Dr. Jay Wiles new elementary science curriculum is now available, and dare I say, it has been worth the wait! For those unaware, Dr. Jay Wile is the author of the Jr. and Sr. High Apologia Science curriculum which was specifically designed for homeschool family use, and he continues in the same vein with his newest courses.

Designed to be used every other day, each of the curriculum courses provides one year’s worth of science instruction. Each book is divided into six sections that include twelve foundational lessons and three challenge lessons, for a total of 90 lessons. While the challenge lessons may be considered optional if you have a science-resistant child, you will find they add depth and enjoyment to the subject being studied and provide excellent extension activities for older or gifted students.

Designed with the belief that children of elementary age can learn together, each lesson includes a hands-on activity or experiment (parental supervision required), approximately three pages of reading, and review questions at three levels of difficulty. The hands-on activities or experiments primarily use commonly found household items, although lab kits are available. Supply lists by unit are conveniently located in the front of the textbooks, making it easy to secure items ahead of time.

While the hardcover Text contains all of the instruction, the author has provided parents with a “Helps & Hints” softcover book which offers experiment and activity notes, answers to all three levels of questions, and optional tests/answers for those who want to incorporate assessments (reproducible for family use). The author recommends students keep notebooks of activities/experiments and lesson questions to evaluate learning. Some reproducible activity templates are included to facilitate this.

The first course, Science in the Beginning, teaches science topics as they relate to the six days of creation. Here is an example of the questions and how the level of difficulty increases. From Lesson 9, Day 1 of Creation:

“Younger Students: Where does your eye’s lens focus the light that passes through it? Write down your predication and then see if it was correct by actually doing the experiment that way.”

At this point, you may wonder how this compares to the Elementary Apologia curriculum. At first glance, the main difference is with the scope of topics. Dr. Jay’s new series provides students with exposure to multiple branches of science within the course of a year. Elementary Apologia takes one topic and studies it in-depth over the course of one year. Parents who have used the Jr. and Sr. High Apologia texts will find this new series is similar to the upper level Apologia texts, with lessons written in a friendly conversational tone, step-by-step experiment instructions and lesson reviews. Full-color graphics are plentiful but not as bountiful as in the Apologia elementary books. Also noteworthy is that each lesson in this book contains three pages of textual reading, which is less than the average daily readings in the elementary Apologia courses. Dr. Jay Wile’s excellent elementary series could ease the transition to the Apologia Jr. High Curriculum for a middle school student who is using a different program.

Texts are available separately as are the Helps & Hints. Sets include both the hardcover Textbook and Helps & Hints softcover book. Dr. Jay anticipates the release of other books in this series. Check our website or call to check availability or upcoming titles. ~ Deanne

I liked the idea of studying Science from a chronological perspective and tie it into our history curriculum.
Kerrie W on May 9, 2018
Thoroughly researched this and the reviews look promising. Love the idea of more hands on activities to extend the learning. I like that it doesn’t just concentrate on one thing at a time because that’s not really how life works, many things are interconnected. I’m excited to try the next ones that seem to be more historical and science, which I like even more but I thought we should start with the first in the series.

Does this come with the notebook for the notebooking assignments? Or is that sold separately?
A shopper on Apr 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, the notebook is not included. That is actually from a separate publisher although it's designed to go with the course and is done with approval from the author. Here's the link for the notebook:

Is there a particular order these sets should be taught in (In the Beginning first, Ancient second, and so on) and what grade levels do they follow? I realize there are different comprehension levels in the chapter questions, but having an incoming 1st grader, I wonder how far these would carry her. Thank you.
Darlene on Mar 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There is no particular order, but we are doing them to correspond to the time period of history we are studying. The books are designed for all elementary students. We started this year with Science in the Beginning, because we are covering OT and Ancient Egypt in history this year. I am using it with my second grader, and she loves it! I wish they had been around for my older children. They were closer in age, and it would have been a wonderful, comprehensive way to do elementary science with multiple grade levels. I like these books better than any other elementary science curriculum, and I have used many over the years. There are three books out so far with the third going through the 17th century. The comprehension questions and activities for older children are appropriate and challenging enough for older elementary children, so it would be a series that you would be able to use for a while - assuming that Dr. Wile is going to release more books in the series.

7 year old loves science now!
What we love about this science... one hands on activities, that this non crafty mom loves doing. The experiments really cement in the information so that what is being taught is retained! It's not forgotten a week later. Quote from 7 year old " I love Science now, the other science was ok, but we never did anything fun.. it was a lot of bla bla bla. Now we are doing real science." The other science had a fancy journal, she likes the composition journal she uses here. She says it makes it her own and make her feel like she's smart to have her own journal. The activities are short, the reading is two pages, the other science was 45 minutes of reading! The activities in this science are fun. I bought the kit, so we have a science tub. Nice to have everything on hand. It's amazing what children retain. Not exhaustive on vocabulary either. For instance one lesson discusses 4 types of energy. gives examples of each. She draws pictures of each in the journal. So once a week, we look through the journal and have her explain her drawings real quick. There's plenty of room for discussion, and for her to make predictions to the answers, alot of times she is correct, because she understood the experiment! I highly recommend this science book. I was scared to try it because of lack of reviews. We are spending the summer doing a lesson 4-5 days a week, it takes about 30 - 45 minutes depending on how long we drag it out with discussion and journaling. And every day is something new! It also will review buy saying, remember in lesson 3 we did so and so activity... remember this happened and why.. so even though it's something different every day, it does gently review though out. Love love love this science. Our other sciences we tried, Apologia young explorers, evan moor skill sharpeners grade 3, Janice Vancleave's (multiple titles) Mason Jar science experiments.

Great for multiple kids
We have been enjoying this book for science quite a bit. The lessons are short and simply explained so that my son (age 6) was kept interested and engaged, as well as my 3 older daughters. I loved that I could do the lesson with all of them yet the assignments were on a young to older student basis (that is, a simple, oral answer for the young students, to some harder assignments for older students). Also, the experiments are interesting and for the most part easy (and you will have most of the items needed around the house). Lastly, I appreciate the way it is arranged (by days of creation) and the way the author points to God through-out the lessons. I am also learning things!

Thorough science curriculum
I will include the same review as the other books in the series, though I will add a special note for this book. By the time I got to this series, my then 4th graders had already done multiple creation studies so in retrospect I would have skipped this book and started with the Ancient World one.

Though the curriculum is advertised as being geared for K5-6th grades, I believe a better fit is possibly upper elementary -if they're more advanced, to middle school, and even early high school. Of course, this would not likely meet the credits needed at the high school level. So middle school is a great age for this curriculum. I like the chronological approach with this series; something most of us most likely didn't experience in our own traditional schooling. There are experiments with each lesson, which are relatively easy to perform, and the materials are typically items you already have on hand. However, most of the lessons revolve around these experiments so it leaves little opportunity to skip over. So on the one hand, if you've ever felt somewhat guilty that you haven't been doing experiments, this will compel you. On the other hand, your hand is somewhat forced to do the experiments, which can be frustrating. The material covered in the series is rich, and thorough, and the layout and graphics are nice, and the lessons aren't too long. Dr. Wile explains things relatively clearly, and the format is more conversational. In my personal opinion, I do find his writing redundant, and feel it could have gone through another round of editing to firm it up. Overall, I would recommend this curriculum.

So glad I purchased this science curriculum!
We're currently on Lesson #20 and so far we've enjoyed every lesson. The experiments are very simple and practical. The explanations are so clear and concise, that even my youngest child is understanding the principles being taught. I am learning so much, along with my kids and it's helping me appreciate more God's power to create magnificent things. I am glad that I selected this course for our family and I highly recommend it.

Easy to use, fun to do, and lots of learning
I have never enjoyed a science textbook as much as this one! My 6th grader could do nearly everything completely independently. My 2nd grader needed some help, but it was fun and we all enjoyed these lessons. As an added bonus, the publisher has a free pdf download on their website of notebooking pages for each lesson. Winner!

We Love This Curriculum
My son - who is in 5th grade - LOVES this science curriculum. The hands-on activities are very engaging, and the text is informative without being overwhelming. He actually enjoys the journaling/notebooking (for the older/oldest students) entries in each lesson, too. He constantly asks to do more than one lesson at a time. We had tried something else previously that didn't work as well, and I am so glad we switched over to Science in the Beginning!

Science in the Beginning
My son is very inquisitive. He also like activities. This series has a short intro, a matching activity/experiment, then more text to talk about what you just saw happen with the experiment. It really helps to have that "see it-learn it" method. We are also very excited about the chronological approach to science.
