Publisher Description:

Nature's Beautiful Order is intended for all students from the 6th through the 8th grades and will also be a fitting supplement for higher-level instruction in biology. In eighteen lessons, students are led through the animal kingdom from the invertebrate animals through the five great vertebrate classes to the culmination of the natural order, a consideration of man as the knowing animal and as a steward of Creation.

In The Abolition of Man (1944), C. S. Lewis called for a "regenerate science" that would "not explain away" when it explained and "remember the whole" when it treated the parts. This introduction to natural history responds to Lewis' call by instilling in the beginning student of biology a love for the beauty and intelligibility of the animal kingdom through the eyes of the classical naturalists. The writers whose works are presented here, including John James Audubon and Jean-Henri Fabre, were some of the greatest observational biologists of all time. They remain useful guides, for the advances in biological science that have happened since they wrote cannot invalidate our first-hand experience of organisms as unified living beings.

The Nature's Beautiful Order set includes a text book, Student Guide and Teacher Guide.

Category Description for Nature's Beautiful Order:

Nature's Beautiful Order by Memoria Press is recommended for use at the 6th to 8th grade level as a supplement to science curriculum, and can also be used alongside your biology at the high school level. The text is a 187-page introduction to the study of animals.

I found this book intriguing from a couple of perspectives. Is it a history book of science or philosophy book of science. It's definitely not a straight science book. I taught science at a Christian school, and never saw much of this information in our texts. The authors explain what an animal is, then they spend fifteen chapters discussing very specific animals and why they fall into certain categories or classifications. The chapters begin with lower order animals (lobsters, cuttlefish, etc.) and end with higher order animals (farm animals, etc.) and wrap up the text with two chapters on humans. The authors classify "man" as part of the animal kingdom and go on to explain why they are different from animals.

Throughout the book you will find quotes from C.S. Lewis (The Abolition of Man) Aristotle, Couvier, John James Audubon, Charles Darwin, and others. Even though you see Darwin in the list of people quoted, there is no evolutionary content in this text. The book is written by Christopher Blum and John Cuddeback, both of whom are classical naturalists and teach at the college level. The text and perspective are intended to give a descriptive account of animals and the world in which they live by looking at the facts.

The Student Guide is a consumable workbook that asks comprehension questions about each chapter. The number of questions vary from chapter to chapter and all of the answers can be found in the text.

The Teacher Guide is the answer key for the questions in the student guide.

The set includes all three books - text, student and teacher guides. ~ Donna

It follows a classical education. It does not teach evolution, yet is not identified with a religious group.

Would this mesh well with Classical Conversations’ Cycle 1 science?
A shopper on May 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This is grades 6-7. Foundation only goes up to 6th grade so it would only overlap with the upper levels possibly. Foundations cycle 1 covers biology and earth science. Nature's Beautiful Order is an introduction to animals which would correspond with part of the first half of the year. Personally I would only consider it for the academically advanced 6th grader who needs a more comprehensive curriculum to supplement what they are studying in CC.

Excellent!
My son and I are really enjoying the set. It encourages you stop and take the time to contemplate nature. I appreciate that it does not teach evolution as fact as do other science textbooks. The only thing it is missing sketches of the creatures discussed.

Not enough review for student retention.
We have used Memoria Press Science before so ordered this set. Was greatly disappointed. There isn't enough review. My dd didn't like that there was no review lesson prior to the tests. She said "How can I remember anything if I only have to read it once and answer a few questions?" We sent it back and ordered something else.
