A true exploration/discovery math curriculum for K-3!

This math curriculum gets at the heart of what people need to know to understand (not just be able to do) math. It lets the kids explore concepts and come up with their own way of solving math challenges and finding patterns. The annotations has so much (great) information to aid in using the lab sheets. As a former algebra math teacher, now homeschool mom of a K, 1st and 3rd grader, I highly recommend miquion math. I have fun seeing how much my kids discover just on one lab sheet.

My 3rd grader had different curriculum in previous years. If we stubble upon a concept he didn’t grasp, the annotations makes it easy for me to find something in a lower lab book that will help him.

Things some may think are cons;

- If you’re looking for drill or extra practice, you’ll have to find that elsewhere or make something. I have no problem with that with my background.

- Purchasing cuisenaire rods is a must. My kids love them.

- There are no directions on each lab sheet. The teacher must read the intro on each category (counting, odd/even, addition, etc...) then read suggested activities for each lab sheet.

Also, anyone in higher levels (and adults too) who seemed to miss some concept can learn a lot from reading the annotations. :)

As expected

Satisfied concerning quality, estimated time to delivery. The only thing more negative was the shipping taxe. But I understand and recommend to other Home schooling persons, because this is a special help, and an alternative to people that study is out of the official "box".

Definitely recommend!

I am really enjoying this curriculum! The sheets are fun for kids to complete and engaging. Some sheets can feel a bit redundant for the topic my kids are learning but these would be helpful if your child needs the extra reinforcement. I like how the annotations book explains each concept rather than it just being an answer key. I’m refreshing my math as my kids are learning it. The games or object lessons are simple yet effective.

I will say that I’m fairly good at talking and explaining off the cuff so this may not be the best choice if you feel you need a script or prompts on what to say exactly. For this price you really are getting straight up math. No fluff! So if you like that, this is for you.

Great manipulative based program!

I am very impressed with this program! Cuisenaire rods are used as a manipulative which really helps my little one to quickly grasp the concepts. It does take some studying on the parent's part to learn the format of the books as no direct instructions are given.

Love these books

Miquon is like a beautiful breath of fresh air in the Math world. I love the way it teaches math and encourages math exploration so that the child can figure out the concept mostly on their own. I love the use of cuisenaire rods to help the child physically see the concept/answer so it isn't just an abstract concept. I would highly recommend this program to everyone! I would also say it's more K-3 rather than 1-3. There are many sheets that Kindergartners can explore and learn with.

Makes math fun and easy!

We have a large family and I'm always spinning lots of plates at the same time! We used Miquon Math for our older children and had dropped it for years. The younger children did

ok in the primer book of the other program, but one entire year

Devoted to nothing but addition was way too slow of a pace and they just sort of

Shut down mathematically. After much prayer about what to do about math, I remembered Miquon and how the cuisenaire rods just make math concepts so obvious! I immediately ordered

the whole set plus the Lab Sheet Annotations! As soon as the books arrived we dove right in. I put my 8 yr old boy and 11 year old girl in The Orange Book! They're flying through it and I have no doubt they will be caught up to grade level in time!

I love how the books quickly move from adding to subtraction and make a fun transition into multiplication. The Lab Sheet Annotations give great instruction for preliminary activities as well as games to make each concept fun. The number lines are extremely helpful as well. My 11 yr old is behind in Math and hadn't even had any fractions yet because of the slow pace of the other program! Miquon makes fractions so easy!

The very first book has everything from counting, addition, subtraction, fractions, measurements, telling time, even multiplying fractions! If you like or need drill, there's lots of printables on the internet, you won't find much in the books. But if the children get it, no need for lots of drill!

After book 6, The Purple Book, the Keys to Math Program is what you will use for 4-12 grades.

Both programs are economical, which is another plus.

This math is not for those that love textbooks, but for families that are more relaxed. We are so glad we switched back!

We didn't finish the orange and red books in first grade We went pretty slowly to keep things fun and interesting I should have done more of the enrichment suggestions in the annotations manual but overall we had a good yearThis program is great if you think outside the box and don't feel the need to slavishly stick to a school curriculum timeline/ scope sequence chartFor 2nd grade I plan to use more manipulatives and use these worksheets as a supplement to other activity-based learning

I cannot recommend this program highly enough! I have used it for 7 years with many students We all look forward to math time every day It truly teaches math concepts instead of memorization or drill and does it in a fun laboratory setting Students learn that there are more than one way to write a problem and get an answer The cuisenaire rods are easy to use to learn the basic functions plus fractions and other math concepts I often tell my students they are learning high school math because it introduces geometry and algebraic concepts in a way that grade school kids understand My 7th grader who started with Miquon in 1st grade has the ability to problem solve think outside the box and solve math mentally because of the foundation Miquon gave him It is a little intimidating to teach at first because each lesson is not laid out for you but if you use Lab Annotations and First Grade Diary to learn along with your children it is a fun experience for everyone You don't have to do each page a certain way in order to be successful (a great problem solving skill for moms to learn)

I've used this series with my older two girls and look forward to using it again this fall with my son It's inexpensive which is a definite plus with four children Also it introduces the four basic arithmetic processes - addition subtraction multiplication and division - right from the start It also offers helpful insight of how to do math in a different way than how I was taught which sometimes helps my kids understand it better Using the Cuisenaire rods helped my kids understand the concepts and they loved having something to manipulate They loved the fun pages included in these too I highly recommend this series The lab annotations doesn't have answers to every sheet; most of them are included- the ones left out are easy enough for the parents Also there is great information in it on presenting different concepts like the difference between 3x4 and 4x3 An inexpensive teacher's manual is a plus too!You need usually two workbooks a year so you don't need to purchase it all at once Also if you decide to start using and your child isn't in first grade it's a good idea to start from the first book I did with my 4th grader and she just worked through the books quicker but it wasn't too babyish for her and introduced things she hadn't covered

It's a very thorough curriculum that keeps math concrete as long as possible. I used it in kindergarten 17 years ago, and now have both a math and electrical engineering degree. I attribute my love for all things math in part to Miquon's gentle and straightforward introduction of mathematical concepts. (The "Key to ..." series is a great follow up!)

These are the only books I have seen which use Cuisenaire rods as an integral learning tool. I consider the rods, the Numicon rod track, and Dienes Base ten blocks to be superb materials for modeling number concepts through grade eight. The Miquon math activity books have more flexible sequencing than any others I am familiar with. The program will complement the Singapore Primary Mathematics program.

This is the best hands on simple to teach at home math lessons I have found in my 10 years of home schooling. It gives true understanding and a great foundation for all learning types since there is a few sujestions of how to teach each lesson and if used with cuisenaire rod lessons the child has a very tactile way to solve a problem in the book and some that they come across in life.

The best part about miquon is you can choose worksheets between books based on you child’s knowledge. For example my son is in 5th grade so he has learned most all the concepts in the purple and yellow books but struggles with fractions. I was able to look up fractions in the annotations to decide which worksheets would be best for him (green) without having to bore him with all of the concepts in the green. It is not set up like a typical math book (at least not how I remember them) but once you get it figured out it it makes much more sense!

It depends on what your student already knows. Miquon is unique in the fact that it teaches most concepts, including multiplication and division, early on (in the first year) and then reviews and expounds on those concepts for the other two years. If you have been using curriculum that hasn't taught those concepts, you will need to start with the first book and work through the sections that are new material to you student. The books are laid out really nice by concept so it's easy to find which sections you need.

I find that the books are really versatile. typically, I see a first grader using level one, the orange book, and a second grader, level two, the red book. Sometimes a second grader is ready for the blue book. I find that once children are on a roll, they can sometimes move through all the books by the end of fourth grade. I also have found the yellow book to be great for third/fourth/fifth, and the purple for fifth, sixth. They were designed to be used only in grades one through three, with two books per year: orange, red in first, blue, green in second, yellow, purple in third. This works for advanced children beautifully, as well. Camille Hayward, Director, The Lake and Park School, Seattle, WA.

The books are consumable. We love them, and find the rods a great hands-on way to help understand the concepts.

Are there prerequisites to the program that my kindergartner needs to master before beginning Miquon?

We already knew our number and how to add & subtract. I bought the first grade diary to go with the program. I did not use it much because it started off too basic for us. I do think I could use it to start my littler ones off in math. I glanced at the 1st workbook which starts with counting. I would think if your child knows his numbers and can recognize the concept of the number (2 is for 2 items etc) then he can start Mequon math.

No, I started my kindergartener this past year and the only thing she could do was count to 20. It's a wonderful program. She really enjoyed doing her math each day and understands the concepts. Make sure you have cuisenaire rods.

No. The idea is to skip through the book allowing your child to pick the sheets they feel comfortable with.
