Gentle
This was a nice gentle way to introduce reading. I enjoyed teaching it, and my younger two enjoyed using it. One pro for the program is that it uses both phonics and sight words, so my kids were reading the cute little readers right away. We had switched from Logic of English Foundations after 2 years of tears and no progress. The one con, and my reason for only 4 stars is that it doesn't seem to lead into the Red Book very well. Two of my kids finished this program, able to read all readers and identify the sounds and sight words introduced, but neither were able to jump right into the Red Book. It took us some extra work doing fluency and long vowel combinations to work up to it. For the price, and the gentle approach it gives I do feel it is worth doing a little extra remedial work.

Love this program
I used this to teach my two eldest children to read. For my third, we tried a couple of other programs because I thought I was bored with it. Well, we’re back to LLATL blue for him because it is so good. He is thriving with this curriculum.

Fabulous Phonics/Reading Program
I have waited till my first grader is halfway through this program to write the review and my mind (and hers) hasn't changed- it is fabulous! The readers are great, the reading aloud suggestions are good, the hands on letter cards and activities like making word wheels out of animals are fun. I am not one that likes busy work but most of the activities my daughter enjoys so we keep them. We did a leisurely pace of phonics in kindergarten and this has been a good program following that. Had we not done phonics yet, this program may have moved too quickly. If your child has done some phonics- this program may be perfect. I am surprised it is not in Cathy Duffy's top recommendations. My daughter really, really enjoys it. We are now at the midpoint and I love the review weeks before moving on. Not repetitive, just review in a different way. I will admit, I've not encountered a language arts program I don't like but I think part of that is b/c I'm picky and end up usually adapting at least a little anyway. Adaptions on this program: Many of the daily exercises do not include handwriting so we keep an extra inexpensive (Getty-Dubay italic) book around as I like to have daily handwriting. Also, we do a lot of daily reading aloud so I will sometimes skip the book recommendations they have for this- however, their recommendations are awesome so this varies whether or not we skip it. We have some fun easy readers recommended from "Teaching Your Child to Read with Children's Books" that I like to add about weekly as well. Teacher and student give this program a "thumbs up".

Wonderful for beginning readers
I adore this series! As a longtime homeschooling parent, we have tried many LA programs, this one is the best! Easy to use for both parent and child, next to no prep time and short and condensed lessons, it is a breeze to use. If you are looking for a program that will aid you in teaching your child to read, this is perfect. Although this book is stated as being for first grade, if your child seems ready to learn their ABC's earlier, I recommend starting this book earlier as well.

I LOVE this program! It comes with everything you need and it tells you what to do each day. With multiple children to teach, that was a huge plus. I noticed my daughter’s reading skills have been vastly improved, this program progresses in a very natural and easy to follow manner.

Working Well
I just started my son on this program, we are doing it at an accelerated pace. He already knows how to read so we don't spend as much time on the phonics parts. My 4yo son is also doing it with us and is enjoying it. Some parts of the program are quite repetitive but this would probably be necessary if this is your child's first reading instruction. The readers are simple and cute. So far so good.

Quality program, but a little outdated
This program is thorough and effective. An encyclopedia is recommended so it's a little out dated in that sense, but the rest of the content is good.

Great all-inclusive program
I have twin boys who struggled with reading. We tried all the usual books and things but nothing stuck with them. I tried this as a hope and they love it! The reading progress chart gets them excited to make progress. The interactive components (not fluff) is perfect for engaging them and helping me know if they are understanding. The handwriting is a bit old fashioned but other than that this has been great for us. If you have kids who wiggle and don't always like sitting still for lessons then this is perfect

I love this learning to read series. I have tried some major name brand reading programs and they were complicated and tons of work on my part. This book is so easy, it has everything you need for all language arts areas and your child learns to read easily.

Our daughter is homeschooling her children and she requested this.

I chose LLATL because it included readers and a workbook and was phonics based with an emphasis on literature. My daughter is advanced in reading comprehension but more typical for her age in motor skills/writing and this program seemed adaptable to fit our needs.

It covers what I need to teach my son how to read who has struggled to read for years. I am really hopeful that this will be the thing that really helps him push past the road blocks we have been dealing with in his reading.

My oldest has done several years of this program already and we love it. Now it's time to start my younger kids with it, but we don't have this level yet.

I ordered the Yellow series for my 6 year old going into 2nd grade and thought this Blue series would be perfect for my 4 year old going into Kindergarten. It seems like the grade levels on these are a little off, but that's just my opinion.

I desired an "easy for Mom" reading program, and it is, and seems to cover all the bases too.

Is it necessary for the student to know the full alphabet and/or letter sounds before using this?
User on May 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No it is not required for the students to know their full alphabet and/or sounds before using this curriculum. They will gain the knowledge by the time they complete this book. My daughter (6yo) started on this book after being in PS kindergaten, where she had learned her alphabet, phonics, etc... My son (5yo) did not attend kindergarten and only knew "most" of his alphabet when he started. They were both at similar levels upon completion. Hope this helps!
