Category Description for Life of Fred Eden Series:

Move over, Gossie and Gertie; Life of Fred is breaking into the early reader genre with the Eden series. Fans of Fred will immediately recognize the trademark sparse graphics (not in quantity, just as a type) and subtle humor. Prof. Schmidt even makes a couple of cameo appearances (as a bus driver/ticket seller in Bus and as himself in Duck). As a LOF fan, I enjoyed reading through each one. They are not phonetic readers, though they have controlled vocabulary that is much more true to beginner reading level than many of the larger publishers' series. Here children will meet both Fred as a (more or less) average four-year old and his compatriot, Kingie (the talking, artistic doll that appears later in the LOF series; notably in Calculus). They will also learn about colors, travel, packing for a trip, counting, how to make French fries and mashed potatoes, and a little grammar. Mostly, though, they will learn about the life of Fred on a trip at age four. I like that the books are part of an overall storyline that begins in Blue and goes through Rain (and possibly beyond). The books are appropriately silly, look like a mishmash of drawings by a four-year-old and graphic art, and are reasonably priced for hardback books. If you're already a Fred fan, you will enjoy introducing your budding reader to him. If not, it's worth a try as an easy reader series. All books are hardbound, 32 pgs.

We purchased the 3rd set (on ebay) without knowing there were 2 other sets. My daughter LOVES these silly books, and I know my son will as well, when he is old enough.

We have a first grader at a Waldorf school and are looking for some readers to work on over the summer. We've worked through the BOB Books and need something new.

My daughter has been loving the LOF Math series and has read tidbits to her younger brother. He is in Kindergarten so the math above his level right now but he is lokking forward to starting it next year. He was very excited to learn that there are LOF readers for kids who are just learning how to read like him. Hoping that these will be as much fun and as even 1/2 as beneficial as the Math Series has been for my daughter.

My Kindergarten age son has been using the Life of Fred elementary math series. He is still a beginning reader, so we read the chapters aloud together and he solves the practice equations. When he learned that there were readers, too, he begged for them. He happily tells anyone who asks that math is his favorite subject, because he likes Life of Fred. Maybe now he'll say both math and reading are his favorites.

I am curious for anyone who has the whole set of these, all 18 or maybe even just these 6 or more, do these get harder as you go along reading thru them? Or are they pretty much all the same reading level just more words per page by the time you get to the last one in the set? Thanks!
Carrie on Feb 25, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Both, there are more words per page and the reading level increases as you go through the series. I can't recommend Life of Fred enough. My kids love all of Dr. Schmidt's work and adding these readers to our library has been a huge hit. One of my boys is what I would call a lazy reader, meaning he avoids any reading that requires effort, but he loves Fred so much that he will sit and work through anything to hear more of his story. Also, the integrated education provided by the main math series makes Life of Fred a wonderful addition to any home!
how many books are in this set?
Tina C on Sep 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: There are 6 Life of Fred Eden books in this series: Blue, Bus, Ducks, Lake, Potato and Rain.

Perfect story to make you laugh!
My second grader LOVES these books! We read one each day at the end of her other lessons and she looks forward to it and enjoys the stories to much that she rereads them to her younger siblings!
