A traditional language arts series that provides grade appropriate instruction in phonics, spelling, vocabulary, grammar (including diagramming), word usage, penmanship, dictionary/library skills, all forms of composition (formal and creative), book reports, literature analysis, and poetry. Thorough and comprehensive in terms of coverage, user-friendliness is fundamental to the series, which allows the student to work independently at all but the early elementary grade levels. Teacher oversight is expected but made easy by teacher materials that provide answers, grading rubrics, and lesson plans (amount of detail declines with grade level). Student materials are attractive and offer color highlights with some illustrations. All content reflects a conservative Christian viewpoint. Course components vary a bit with grade level but typically include sets of 10 consumable student worktexts (LightUnits) coupled with teacher materials. Quizzes and unit tests are part of each LightUnit.
The LightUnits Set for each course provides the instructional/textual material as well as space for the student pages plus quizzes and tests. There are 14-17 lessons per unit that include two quizzes and one unit test. Unit tests are in the middle and can be pulled out. There are helps in the back of the units -a penmanship chart, spelling bookmarks, a glossary, and a grammar reference. Instruction sequences are in color-shaded boxes. Both the Teacher's Guides with Answers and the Teacher's Guides provide daily lessons and spelling lists plus an index of grade level skills, a scope and sequence, and alternate tests with answers. Teacher's Guides with Answers are spiral bound and have reduced copies of student pages. Teacher's Guides are smaller and stapled and have only the lessons and appendices with answers in a separate publication. Quizzes/Tests Answer Keys provide full size copies of student test pages with answers filled in. Answer Keys have half-size reduced copies of LightUnit pages as well as tests. The Answer Keys Sets are two books that have answers to the LightUnit exercises. The Teacher Materials have a unit overview, brief lesson notes for each lesson, a scope and sequence for the course, and alternate LightUnit tests (in case a student needs to retake a test) and their answers. ~ Janice
Language arts programs listed in this section cover some combination of reading/literature, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, handwriting or typing but do not attempt to cover all of those skill areas.
