Item #: | JAGMCH |

Grades: | 4-5 |
Product Description:
Package includes Junior Analytical Grammar: Mechanics Workbook, DVD Set, and Teacher’s Book. This introduction to English grammar parallels some of the units of instruction found in Analytical Grammar, but it utilizes a less complicated level of sentence construction (the reading level is about 2nd/3rd grade). The 11 units of Jr. Analytical Grammar cover the same topics as the first season (year) of Analytical Grammar, while the 15 units of the Mechanics course cover some of the same punctuation covered in the third season (year) of AG. It's assumed that Jr AG students have had the basics of sentence end punctuation and first word capitalization. Units are covered in a week of lessons that include instructional information, three sets of exercises, and a test (no Skills Support at this level). As with Analytical Grammar, teacher-student interaction is expected, all work is completed "Open Notes", and correction is a teacher-student activity. Students are expected to both parse and diagram sentences.
The Teacher Book includes a brief overview of the program along with a suggested daily lesson plan, all instructional information, and exercise worksheets with completed answers. Answers are detailed, with diagramming included. The Teacher Book is necessary to the program, both to understand and implement the course as designed and for the extensive answer keys. Jr. AG - like AG - is an open-and-go program. The Student Book includes all instructional information, exercise worksheets, and tests. The two DVD sets (each have 2 DVDs) provide video lesson instructions that can be used by the student or by the teacher and student together.

Analytical Grammar Programs are robust without being overwhelming. They are thorough, comprehensive, and doable. Analytical Grammar's author, Robin Finley, has said that she was a woman on a mission - "to convince parents that they don't need to be doing a grammar worksheet every day, all year long, for years and years!" Prepare to be convinced.
The main focus of the series is the Analytical Grammar program which is designed for grades 6 and up and would typically be done in three, ten-week "Seasons;" one each in grades 6, 7, and 8. Parts of speech, phrases/clauses and punctuation are covered in these "Seasons." Consistent bi-weekly review follows each Season for the rest of the year. Although suggested usage is over three years, there is a lot of flexibility in the program and it can be used in two years or even one year, if desired.
Jr. Analytical Grammar, a program for grades 4-5, has two courses that provide preparation in parts of speech (Grammar) and punctuation (Mechanics). These two courses introduce the student to what will be covered with more detail in the middle school program but it is not necessary to start with these programs.
The High School Reinforcement program provides a literature-based grammar review for grades 8 or 9 through grade 12.
Beyond the Book Report is a companion program to Analytical Grammar that provides a literature and writing component.
Read more details on each of the programs by clicking the category listing on the left.
These materials offer a complete and comprehensive coverage of all three elements - grammar (i.e. parts of speech, complete sentences), usage (i.e. homophones, figures of speech, proper word choice to convey meaning), and mechanics (i.e. punctuation, capitalization).
