Good overview course
I am not too interested in poetry, but I knew my children needed to learn about it. I really liked this course because it covers all the basics. Most of the work is independent, and the teacher guide makes it easy to check the homework and tests.

Easy to follow and fun
My second child is now going through this program and we have very much enjoyed it. If you can get the Dvds they are a very helpful addition. Not only will your child learn a lot about poetry, but they will also learn how to construct poems themselves. I was very excited to see the poems my daughter crafted with the instructions from this book. The teacher, Matt Whitling is also very conscious of the the fact that a lot of boys might steer away from poetry thinking it too "girly" or "flowery" and he does a great job to make the subject accessible and exciting for everyone. I highly recommend it and will continue to use this program with the rest of my children.

I have the teacher key already. literature and poetry will be key in his high school years and although he's been exposed to poetry already, we will be studying it more in depth. This book helps to give the foundation before analyzing it.

This is a separate workbook to use along with the Grammar of Poetry set (because I have two students who both will need their own consumable book).

This is a great course. We already have the DVD's, and have used it before. Just need the workbook for this year.

I used the older version of this program with our two oldest who are boys. It provided the mechanics of poetry as well as the opportunity for them to write their own poetry with each lesson. My hope was that this program would give them an appreciation and/or understanding of the complexities of poetic literature like The Divine Comedy.

Our 16 yo daughter will be using it this year. She is more of the artistic type, so we'll see how does with the mechanical part of the program.

Can this be used on its own as just a workbook or do you need the whole program?
User on Aug 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We used the program last year and the kids enjoyed watching Matt Whitling explain each concept and give examples from his students about how things should be done. As we got farther into the program, we watched only the initial parts of the video because we felt comfortable enough going through the workbook without having to see every single example or without having him show the correct answers when we were all done. If you feel very comfortable with poetry, I think you could use the program without the videos, but I do think for my two, they enjoyed watching him explain. (By the way, he is not a very animated teacher but he does a thorough job explaining the concepts.)
Is the first version with cover picture of a guy on a horse, different from the second version with the balloon?
A shopper on Aug 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Per the publisher: The one with the horse is an older edition, so there are two changes to be aware of: The new edition has perforated pages instead of spiral bound and has complete reformatting of interior and worksheets for better use in the classroom. Content is the same for both editions.
What is the primary difference between The Grammar of Poetry and the Poetry Primer by the same author and publisher? I am looking to use this at a homeschool coop just as a supplement on poetry in a general literature class. I would like the middle school students to learn primarily how to analyze poetry and the literary terms and not as much emphasis to be placed on writing. Which level would be best. I was thinking the Primer seemed more focused on that.
A shopper on Jul 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have the Primer, but never used it. As I recall, it is a truncated version of the Grammar of Poetry. I think that the Primer would be best for Middle School. Have a great year! God's blessings, Dawn
