  • A separate, consumable writing workbook for each grade level provides approximately 35 lessons covering brainstorming, outlining, re-writing, evaluation, and all the parts of the complete, well-structured essay. I like how thorough the Saxon math curriculum is, and think the depth of this curriculum will work well for my third grader. I have tried numerous other programs (Abeka, BJU, Evan-Moor, Good and Beautiful, Night Zookeeper), and my daughter isn't retaining the information she has learned thus far.

I chose SAXON Grammar and Writing 3 for my son who will be homeschooling with me after initially having a public school experience. He is lacking in phonics, grammar, and a writing education. After reading many hours worth of reviews I have concluded that this program is the most systematic, spiraling curriculum that leads to writing confidence. I have great hopes that he will be able to confidently write and edit at or above his age level once completing this program.

We have loved the Saxon/Hake teaching/learning method. I have 6 kids that have each benefited from this curriculum. I first found the math now we are enjoying the grammar and writing for my younger 3 children. They do a great job building on previous things learned and connecting the dots in the learning process.

I'm looking to start Saxon Grammar and Writing. I have a rising 4th grader who has not learned a lot grammar outside of subject/predicate, punctuation, nouns and exposure to other grammatical concepts without drilling as we follow a Charlotte Mason education in the early years. Now that we are ready to start official grammar instruction, do you think that level 3 would be a good place to start? Or should I jump right into level 4. My gut is telling me to start in level 3 to really get the base without overwhelming, but is level 4 just as approachable besides not being in workbook format? Thank you!

BEST ANSWER: I really liked level 4 for my fourth grader who also had not had much experience with grammar before using it. It’s hard to tell though; I’m not familiar with level 3. I will say that they I introduce a lot of concepts. I suspect level 5 continues with these concepts as learning happens through repetition. You can also take the book at your own pace. We purchased it for last year as I homeschooled as a pandemic solution and I was very happy. I will admit, however, I was not as thoughtful in my selection as you are. My daughter was missing traditional school at the fourth grade level, so I bought the fourth grade book. I will say it worked well for us. I wish I could help you more.

Love it!
I love how Saxon takes each lesson bit by bit and spirals back to it again. I know my son forgets, so this was important for me when choosing this curriculum. I do wish it was a bit more colorful, however, it is a very good, solid program.

What I was looking for — very gentle and clear instruction.

Good gentle reading/vocabulary level with some vocabulary development as well — not overwhelming!!!!!!!!

A must have for any language arts program
I absolutely love Saxon Grammar and Writing 3. I also use Saxon Grammar and Writing 5. The layout is almost exactly like the Saxon Math which I already love. It is circular so the skills build each day and are reviewed each day. I have a child who struggles with writing and this program is helping him tremendously. It is meticulous enough for my high standards to keep him on grade level, but slow and purposeful enough to keep him motivated and feeling successful. It takes us about 20-30 minutes depending on the content of each day. I highly recommend it.

Curtis & Hake know how to make quality school books for my kids to work at their own pace. Instructions are clear and in an orderly learning manner. My children have excelled using their books.
