Publisher Description:

First Start Reading covers consonants, short and long vowels, 45 common words, and manuscript printing, accompanied by artist-drawn coloring pictures and drawing pages for every letter. Your child will begin reading in the very first lesson as he progresses through five student books and over thirty-one phonetic stories, such as "Hogs and Pigs and "Jog to the Jet. The Teacher Manuals guide you through the program and provide helpful assessments and teaching tips.

This set includes the following: First Start Reading Books A-E.

Category Description for First Start Reading:

First Start Reading by Memoria Press is a traditional and uncomplicated approach to phonics with an emphasis on vowel-consonant/word-families phonics and a serious focus on correct pencil grip and letter formation. In a day and age when penmanship is often ignored, they've chosen to make it a central part of their approach to reading using it as a kinesthetic reinforcement activity. This program covers consonants, short and long vowels, and at least 45 common words and manuscript printing. The entire program consists of five Student Worktexts (A-E) and two Teacher's Guide, which make up the Complete Set below. The worktexts are 70 - 108 pages each and contain half letter presentation, blending, and reading practice and half writing practice space. Black and white line art drawings are also included to color. First Start Book E provides more reading practice and advanced phonics, and functions as preparation for transitioning into StoryTime Treasures, Memoria Press' first grade reading/literature guides. Each of the eight lessons focuses on a particular phonics concept and each includes a story. The Teacher's Guides starts with an introduction that covers all the basics and equips you with the information needed to teach the program effectively. The lesson plans include general information for the teacher as well as scripted instructions for the student.

After completing this program, Memoria Press suggests continuing reading progress with real literature or their StoryTime Treasures literature program. Traditional Spelling by Memoria Press will also provide continued phonetic practice.

Category Description for Memoria Press Phonics & Reading:

A surprise from a publisher known for its Latin programs! First Start Reading from Memoria Press is deceptively simple with an emphasis on vowel-consonant/word-families phonics and a serious focus on correct pencil grip and letter formation. Yes, in a day and age when penmanship is often ignored, they've chosen to make it a central part of their approach to reading. And, I have to confess it makes sense. After all, it serves as a kinesthetic reinforcement activity.

First Start Reading is a traditional and uncomplicated approach to phonics. After starting with ear training, vowel-consonant blending with unvoiced (m, n, s, r, f, t) consonants is first. Teach one sound for each phonogram at a time. Practice the new phonogram and its sound in a word family list with extensive practice in CVC words. Practice reading words and sentences as early as possible and reinforce learning with manuscript printing and that strong emphasis on correct pencil grip and letter formation. Include a small number of sight words. Throw in a couple of clever "tricks" for dealing with b-d confusion and you're done! Once mastered, these skills should take the student competently into a first grade reading level.

The entire program consists of four Student Worktexts (A-D) and a Teacher's Guide. The worktexts are about half letter presentation, blending, and reading practice and half writing practice space - on facing pages. Black and white line art drawings that can be colored keep the look clean. Letter formation clues include directional arrows on sample letters and starting point "dots." The four Student Worktexts are from 70 to 108 pages. The Teacher's Guide starts with an introduction that covers all the basics - syllabi for the Worktexts, the phonics approach, getting started, phonics recitation (an important element of the program), and pencil grip instruction. The rest of the book - except for a few reproducible visuals in the appendix - are wrap-around lesson plans. The lesson plans include general information for the teacher as well as scripted instructions for the student. As mentioned, half of every lesson is writing instruction, which serves as phonics reinforcement.

We expect easy-to-use from Memoria Press and we're not disappointed here. There's an amazing amount of quality phonics/reading instruction in a very reasonably priced package. You might be wondering what to do after this course. Perhaps Memoria will publish a sequel but until then they recommend Primary Phonics as a follow-up. First Start Reading is obviously designed as a lead-in to another new program from Memoria: StoryTime Treasures. Check our reading section for more information. ~ Janice

I have two foster kids who are very far behind in school. I'm trying to find good reading and writing resources and these looked like some of the best I found online. I hope they are!

These are great! Once you get your child started, they can do a lot on their own. Excellent for parent educators who are multi-tasking.

Classical education plus I LOVE the first grade curriculum this leads into. I used Story Time Treasures with my first three kids. It is paired with classical literature and we all enjoyed it so much.

I used this reading program with my daughter with great success. If it's not broken, don't fix it!
Megan S on Jun 26, 2017
It works! My children who have used it read well. Those who have used other material do not read as well.

The illustrations on the covers caught my attention. I needed something to go with my Alpha Phonics reading program. I enjoyed teaching from Alpha Phonics but felt my students needed something they could "do" along with the words they had just learned. These writing pages seemed like they would be a good fit.

Great, but not what I was seeking
I was mostly looking for a phonics curriculum and this incorporates writing as well. My son is almost 6, but is not wanting to practice writing. He knows how, just refuses. I’m trying to trust the process instead of forcing readiness. This curriculum is great if you are looking for a supplemental to phonics and a handwriting curriculum. Love the layout and the coloring activities but ultimately wasn’t what I was looking for. I just purchased explode the code so maybe that will work better.

Wonderful Phonics/Handwriting program for K-1st
This is my second go 'round with this series, and that is saying something for me! I appreciate the order of the lessons, (the children start reading (i, am, sam, etc.) basically from page 1) handwriting and phonics are learned together which makes it easier for me whilst homeschooling 5 with a toddler. I will definitely be using this with #6 in a few years, i only wish i'd known about it with my other 3!

Handwriting and Phonics in 1
I started this with my almost five year old. We do one lesson a day. She is blending words very smoothly and her handwriting is great. I would say this, the teachers guide, and perhaps the Kindergarten American Language readers are all you need for a kindergarten language arts program.
