Category Description for Excelerate Spanish:

Attention audio and kinesthetic learners! Here is a Spanish curriculum made just for you! Using a method called Total Physical Response (TPR) students are taught using videos and reactive body movement as they repeat & respond to the instructor. Each lesson has three parts: vocabulary, actions, and a comprehension check. The Lesson Book includes a thorough explanation of the pedagogy (methodology) and a script from the video lessons. As a parent/teacher you really need to understand the why here as it is not a traditional course. You are told step by step how to present the twenty-four lessons (87pp.) If you are comfortable with the language, you could use this book to present the lessons yourself, if not, you can use this book to answer student questions about the lessons in the videos. The Lesson Book is a necessary component of the program. Excelerate Spanish uses a non-reproducible Workbook for each student (105pp). This holds extension activities from the lessons and is not meant to be used without them. Activities include a variety of puzzles, games, mini-books, scrambled stories, cloze passages, grammar practice, picture definitions, & more. Depending on your goals with your student(s) you may or may not use this item. The Answer Key (77pp.) includes answers to both the Workbook and Lesson Book. Very young learners may use just the videos and become familiar with the vocabulary & sounds of the language. Mid/upper elementary students can do some writing, so I like the Workbooks at this age for reinforcing the audio/physical lessons. The Lesson DVDs are not flashy. They show a teacher and her students modeling the lesson. As the teacher asks questions, students respond to her in Spanish or move/motion as your own student(s) will do. This would work well in a homeschool setting as well as in a co-op or traditional classroom. A good, user-friendly option to introduce elementary to middle school students to Spanish, especially great for those "wiggly" learners or those who struggle with reading, since they are not learning directly from a book. All books are soft cover.

While level 2 continues where level 1 stops, it is possible to jump into level 2 having done another program for first year Spanish. Excelerate uses the TPR method (total physical response) which requires the learner to use their body and act out what they are learning. More than just the command/response that is much of level 1, level 2 comes up with more creative situations, thus extending your students Spanish repertoire. Because it is so untraditional, it can be tricky to spell out what exactly is covered, but here are some of the scenarios: zoo animals; going to the movies with a friend; a piano lesson; a new recipe; Don Quixote and El Cid. There are 24 week-long lessons each with vocabulary, gestures to practice, questions with replying actions, a skit to act out, comprehension questions, and a reading followed by yes/no questions. Again, videos are required. There is no formal testing included. ~ Sara

Why did you choose this?

My children are wigglers. This sounds like it will be a pleasant break from regular study.

Recommended by another Spanish teacher. I have used a similar material that uses the TPR method, but this seems a bit more robust with Textbook, Workbook, Answer Key, and DVDs.

After researching a lot of different Spanish curriculum, I chose this because I felt it would the easier to use with a wide range of ages (my kids are 4th-9th grade, and I want to teach them Spanish all at the same time).

Includes more modes of learning than just "read, listen and repeat." Also includes learning whole phrases and sentences.

It looks like a super fun Spanish curriculum. After listening to a bunch of reviews, it seems that the methods used here will help my kids have better retention!

It looks like a good program when comparing it to all the other many options out there. We think it might be the best fit for our learning style. The price was better here than on the company's site as well.

It was recommended to me.

We needed a complete Spanish curriculum to use at our co-op that had dvd instruction and workbooks. I hope this works for our needs.

My daughter learns well with interactive resources that are thorough and rigorous. In addition, since she tends to be a kinesthetic learner, I appreciate that this curriculum incorporates movement. I am hoping that this will increase her rate of retention.

Because it is recommended for auditory and kinesthetic learner. And because it has DVD's, which gives an additional resource type.

Because it was recommended by specialists at HSLDA as a great option due to the gestures for vocabulary words.

Does this complete curriculum teach all levels of Spanish, or does it just teach easy Spanish? For example, in a public school they teach Spanish 1, 2, and 3. Is this all three levels?
A shopper on Sep 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: According to the Excelerate website and having the curriculum, this is the equivalence of Spanish I. They have a Spanish II available, which with both programs would meet requirements for most states with competency and language credits.
Can this program be used on an Apple?

BEST ANSWER: If your Mac will play DVDs, these videos should work.

Maybe not work for everyone
Purchased due to the glowing reviews, however we do not share the share opinions.
1.) Low budget production DVD; very poor audio quality, extremely difficult to hear or understand what the speaker is saying. Especially when her back is turned.
2.) Neglected to even set a basic foundation for the sound of the alphabet/symbols of the language.
3.)Far too many words/phrases introduced at one time for a learner with no prior history in this language.
4.) The speaker spoke too fast to clearly he hear or understand the nonsense phrases a student was intended to repeat.

Believe sticking a little better than traditional
Have an 11 year old son who pretty bright, loves math, science & literature, also plays piano. He has a great accent and dvd helps w/pronunciation. Not everyone is the same and gesticulations of words only frustrated my kid; having to learn sounds & vocab besides. So took them out & he is progressing further. I did add words to vocab. list that were mentioned in DVD like "con" "veces" and "otra vez." Ordered actually separately: DVD 1-6 with wrkbk, lessons, and answer booklet to see if a good fit and is plenty. Also, incorporated a lesson with interrogatives since introduced quickly as well as numbers which he learned rather quickly. So overall happy with curr. presented instead of the traditional way. Modifying to our child's needs seems to have worked for us; another ex. beside omitting the movements was put into effect in lesson 1 act. 2, I just told him to number from 1-10 instead since it made it easier for him to understand.

So happy to have found this!
Finally, the type of Spanish Curriculum that will work for us! The DVD lessons are invaluable, as for foreign language you really need someone who can speak well, which is certainly not me! The lessons are well done and work perfectly for multiple ages and really give a nice break to for homeschool teachers who aren't comfortable in the foreign language department - AND need a break from teaching everything:) I'm going through the course myself along with the kids to improve my Spanish, and though we're just getting into the program, I can already tell that it is sticking much better than more traditional programs, even Rosetta Stone (which we had been using before). Also it is much easier to have everyone have class at once instead of multiple sessions individually on the computer. The kids are engaged and enjoy it, and as someone who knows some spanish but is reluctant to speak, I'm finding it extremely helpful. My kids understand a lot of spanish as their father is a native speaker (though you wouldn't need that for the program) but they are reluctant to speak and are speaking in class much more readily than before. I'm so glad to find a program that doesn't just start with greetings and the names of food etc.; you really delve into full conversations from the get go, but in a completely do-able way. Excellent program also for kids who have some Spanish language exposure but need something more formal. They won't be bored or stuck going over things they already know, yet kids with no experience will be at no disadvantage. For the cost with the video lessons (love these!) it really is a great deal for a complete program.
