Product Description:

Looking for a solidly Christian and academically complete health and nutrition course for your high schooler? You may have just found it! Although this course was not available for an independent review prior to our catalog printing, it appears this course will meet the academic and value needs of homeschool families. Beginning with an overview of anatomy and physiology, this courses scope includes senses, genetics, macro and micro nutrients, exercise and diet. Emotional issues and mental illness, human value, culture, gender roles, families, socialization, communication skills and conflict resolution skills are also covered. Reproductive anatomy and physiology are covered including accurate illustrations and descriptions_1. Marriage, sexuality, pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases are discerningly explained, along with alcohol and drug abuse, depression, pornography and other topics necessary for our young people to understand for successful navigation in adulthood. This is handled gently, and respectfully, but parents should evaluate their young adults emotional and spiritual maturity prior to lessons. Over 50 projects are included in the text/student notebook which will not require a lab kit. The publisher states this will not meet a high school science lab credit.

Unlike other Apologia courses, the Student Notebook is required for this course. Solutions are available online with course purchase. Apologia recommends the course be taken concurrently with their 9th grade Biology. Parents should discern their young person's ability and maturity. This one-year course will meet your transcript needs and prepare your student for college level courses. ~ Deanne

Set includes the Hardcover Textbook and Student Notebook (both are required for the course). The Solutions manual is available for free on the publisher's website (access information is provided with textbook purchase). Solutions Manual contains answers to the study guide and exams.

Course requires the textbook, student notebook, Internet access and basic exercise equipment (fitness ball, athletic shoes, cushioned floor).

This package includes the following items:

Publisher Description:

Apologias newest curriculum, Exploring Creation with Health and Nutrition, covers what maturing students need to know to help them make the best choices they can for themselves as they become young adults. Health is about stewardship: managing what you have as well as you can. This 15-module course, which includes both a hardcover textbook and a spiral bound notebook, covers the physical, nutritional, emotional, and spiritual aspects of growing into a healthy adult. Students will study the human body systems, senses, genetics, temperaments, and physical influences on thoughts and feelings. The course respectfully covers mental illness and emotional stability, as well as the inestimable value of another human being, our culture, our gender roles, our families, socialization, communication skills, and conflict resolution skills. Students will gain an in-depth knowledge of both macronutrients and micronutrients, including the importance of exercise and proper diet. Over 50 projects, noted in the textbook and included in the student notebook, cover materials such as nature versus nurture, personal temperament, good decision-making skills, boundary setting, analyzing food intake and activity levels, creating good hygiene habits, keeping a sleep record, as well as so much more.

The companion notebook is designed to be used with Apologia's Exploring Creation with Health and Nutrition, and contains all projects, study guides and tests needed to complete the course.

NOTE: Students will require both the textbook and a student notebook to complete this course.

Parental Note: This is a full health textbook. Some students may not be matured enough to discuss some of the topics. The reproductive systems are covered in detail, including accurate, yet respectful, illustrations and descriptions_1. We respectfully discuss the act of marriage, sexual misconduct, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases. We discuss alcohol and drug abuse, depression, pornography and other topics that also require maturity. Please use your knowledge of your students to decide if this course is appropriate for their maturity levels.

Category Description for Apologia Junior / Senior High Science:

Written specifically for use in a homeschool environment, these biblically-centered courses take a lot of pressure off the parent teaching the course. The main component of each course is the textbook. Please note that as of summer 2020, most textbooks have switched from hardcover to paperback. The student text includes all the student reading, instructions for labs, "On Your Own" exercises, and fifteen to twenty "Study Guide" questions at the end of each chapter. Unlike many upper-level science texts, we have found these to be extremely readable! The text has a conversational tone, and concepts are explained in an easy-to-understand way. Plenty of helpful diagrams and pictures are included which add interest and break up the text. Answers to the "On Your Own" exercises are also included with discussion at the end of each chapter. The labs are designed to be done easily, and most require only household items to complete; unlike high school courses, like Bob Jones which require investing in some lab equipment and chemicals to complete the labs. Where a microscope or dissecting materials are required, a reasonably-priced complete kit of materials is available, for ease in collecting the items.

The Solution Manual contains test questions for each chapter, answers to the test questions and solutions to the "Study Guide" questions. For some courses, a separate Perforated Tests booklet is available; please note that this is only necessary if you want an extra copy of the test questions.

The recently-published Student Notebooks are a user-friendly companion that provides space for answering the On Your Own and Study Guide questions as well as for developing Lab Reports. Study helps include graphic organizers and a Module Summary for each module (fill-in-the-blank). Digging Deeper sections provide opportunity for practical applications and writing activities. For the teacher there are grading rubrics for lab reports and suggested answers for some of the graphic organizers. The History of Science module includes a nicely done timeline. Grading rubrics for the lab reports are provided in the Appendix.

Most of the courses are available on Complete Course CD-ROMs. These 2-disc sets include all of the information found in the print version of the course along with additional multimedia animations, videos, narrations, and pronunciation guides. Tests can be viewed on-screen and printed out, but are not interactive. The teacher has access to password-protected answers which they can use for manual grading. Although the program does not require access to the internet, Internet Explorer is used as the interface.

Companion CD-ROMs are also available for each Apologia textbook. Not to be confused with the CD-ROM Complete Course, these CD-ROMs offer only the multimedia features that cannot be included in a print textbook. Features include videos of experiments, close-ups of a variety of organisms, identification of different components on 3-D models, and pronunciations of words with which students are probably unfamiliar. This one would be our preference, as our family finds it easier to read a book than to read for an extended period on the computer monitor. System requirements for all CD-ROMS: Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7, 8, and 10 (not supported for Mac operating systems).

MP3 Audio CDs are also available for most courses. The audio files are in MP3 format, and will require an MP3-compatible CD player to use (these can also be run on most computers). Tests, study guides, and answers are not included - this is simply an audio version of the text.

Apologia also offers Video Instruction for Biology, Chemistry, Marine Biology and Advanced Biology. Currently some are in DVD format and some have transitioned to USB flash drive. Sherri Seligson, author and scientist, is your host and takes you to interesting locations, incorporating animated diagrams (over 20 hours of instruction) to help students better understand the concepts being taught. The content is more of a summary of the textual information found in each section of the modules than a narration of the text. Students will either see Sherri Seligson on location or in a lab during the speaking portions or they will see animated illustrations and examples. Sherri takes students through each lab and talks about what needs to be done and the results of the experiments.

System requirements for USB drives: USB port (PC or Mac), media player capable of playing mp4 files, and an internet browser. DVD requirements: DVD drive on your computer (PC or MAC) capable of playing mp4 files; these are not compatible with a DVD player.

Category Description for Apologia Science:

Apologia Science courses are written from a Biblical worldview with the homeschool in mind. At the elementary level, courses follow a Charlotte Mason-inspired methodology, with lessons organized around narration, notebooking exercises and hands-on activities or projects. Children at different ages can use these together, learning at their own level. Each course is designed to be teacher-student interactive, so teacher involvement is fairly high at this level. At the junior high and high school levels, science courses are more traditional in nature, with the textbook written to the student. Teacher involvement time at this level is much less than at the elementary level. Textbooks contain student reading, lab instructions, "On Your Own" questions and Study Guide questions. A Solutions Manual provides the answers to these and the test questions. Lab kits are available separately for both the elementary and upper-level science courses which include most of the harder to find items you will need.

Items listed in this section tend to be complete science programs with a teacher and student component, requiring few supplements besides science supplies.

Can I order two student notebooks for the health and nutrition set?
A shopper on Aug 30, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the Student Notebooks can be ordered separately from the Set. Here is the link:

Would this curriculum work to fulfill a science credit? Science of Nutrition?
A shopper on Jun 23, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I personally would count it as a health credit. I might consider it science for middle school, but I dont think I would for High School. It really is a personal preference and that might be influenced by any specific laws in your state. I think the portion that deals with reproductive health/sexuality is more appropriate for high school ages. That being said there is a lot of basic biology in relation to the human body. I just dont personally believe the science is strong enough for a high school science credit. . I loved the book by the way. I think it is so important in this age of busyness and fast food for our children to understand how the choices they make effect their bodies/health and spirituality. It addresses mind/body/spiritual connections and purity.Hope this helps
Can I just purchase the textbook seperate and not the notebook?
A shopper on Apr 10, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No, I wouldn't advise that. Not only is it written and meant to be taught as a set, I don't think they should be separated. Excellent curriculum. Very well thought-out, laid out and a decisively Christian viewpoint. Also, I wouldn't suggest this curriculum to students unless they're high school and mature enough to handle the content. The last (15th) chapter is all about human sexuality, reproduction, etc. from a very Biblical standpoint.
Would this be listed as a full health credit on transcript?
A shopper on Mar 23, 2019
BEST ANSWER: This is only a semesters worth of content or a whole year 3 days per week. It would depend what state you are in how many credits to give. Where we are now it is one credit per semester but in our previous state it was a credit per year for a class or 1/2 credit for a 1 semester class.
Would this be ok for a 7th grader or is it truly high school level?
A shopper on Sep 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Course load wise it’s probably do-able for a 7th grader, some content may be better understood by high school level
Is this a full credit course?
A shopper on Aug 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it would be a full credit Health course.

Highly recommend!
We love this curriculum. My daughter is using it for 10th grade. She says they make the information personal so it's enjoyable. The text is advanced. My daughter does fine with it but for younger students they might struggle. I really like the chapter on reproduction. It's done very tastefully. The book highlights waiting until marriage for sex and discusses why that's healthier for you emotionally and physically. Those are the morals we are raising our children with, it's wonderful to have it supported by scientific evidence.

I love it so far!
My daughter just started module 2, but she has been very interested in the projects from module 1. We plan to use it for just 1/2 credit, but it will be hard to decide what to leave out. It all looks great. I really like how it handles the topic of vaccines. The author gives both sides of the discussion and invites the student to make an informed choice. Websites are given on the book extras site for further reading if desired. I prefer this over texts that give only one side of a controversial issue and leave it there.

Three cheers for Apologia Health!
I have four kids and have invented my own list of books to cover what I thought needed to be covered for high school health. Now that I'm to my youngest child taking health, I don't have to use my cobbled together curriculum. It's in the familiar Apologia format and the information is well presented. Thanks Apologia!

Apologia Health and Nutrition
This is an excellent science course which doubles as a health class because in addition to studying anatomy, cells, the body systems and disease it includes subjects as healthy diet and exercise, drug and alcohol abuse and human sexuality. My daughter is really enjoying it and has become much more aware of making healthy food choices and exercising more.

Very Thorough
As an adult, what do you need to know? This book covers it: mental health, how the body functions (from dental care to digestion), and the importance of sleep, nutrition and exercise. The student notebook includes the "On Your Own" questions posed in the textbook, lesson review, and tests. (The textbook will function fine as a stand-alone text, however.) There's not a lot of attention given to illegal drugs or prescription drugs nor promiscuity and pornography-- these things are mentioned without the over-emphasis of public schools. The last module is about reproductive health and it's very well written, covering important details for both genders. The book also included a module on life's difficulties and coping with hardships using Christ as our strength. Each module ends with references to health care careers.

Excellent curriculum!
The only criticism my son has is there's no glossary at the back of the book, so he's making his own in the notes section at the beginning of each module in the student journal. My only criticism thus far is that in Module 1 there's not enough discussion of what can go wrong when there's chromosomal abnormalities, ie: Down syndrome, etc. We researched online and found the human genome project's information and the March of Dimes website to cover this topic.

Good curriculum but lacking hands-on grade book.
Overall, this is a very good curriculum. However, I really wish there was a teacher answer key available for purchase. In order to grade, you have to go online, create an account, and either print the answer key yourself or keep going back to the website to grade. Not very user friendly!
