Product Description:

Grade 2: Begins with a review of first grade concepts, as students learn number sense and place value; skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10s; counting and place value to 1000; model 3-digit numbers; addition and subtraction with 2 digit numbers; bar modeling; money and time (hour/half-hour/5 minute increments); addition and subtraction of 3 digit numbers; measurement (Standard and metric); data and graphs, and geometry (2D/3D shapes, angles, symmetry, equal parts).

Offering a systematic presentation of skills, Apologia’s new math program provides a creation based, hands-on approach to math education. Through the lessons, children are pointed to the Creator and shown the connections between math and science. Each lesson is presented in a 4-step progression: Project and/or problem, pictorial presentation, abstract presentation, and application. Levels are theme based following the same topical themes found in the Apologia Young Explorer’s series. While the programs are independent of one another, 1st graders studying Astronomy may enjoy the space icons and occasional space themed activities in the first level of Exploring Creation with Math. Lessons are highly interactive and will take 30-45 minutes. Let’s take a look at a typical lesson: Introduce the lesson with a hands-on project and apply the new concept through a practice worksheet. Lessons often end with an additional challenge that may be a game or other hands-on activity. Daily lessons are interactive and will take 30-45 minutes per day, including 5-10 minutes of review. Most activities use household or easily found items, although a few math manipulatives are necessary. For your convenience a manipulative kit is available. Currently, grade levels 1 and 2 are available, with grades 3-6 planned for future release.

Required for the program are the soft cover Teaching Guide & Answer Key, and the spiral bound All-in-One Student Text and Workbook. The Teaching Guide and Answer Key includes a suggested daily schedule (4 Days per week/28 weeks per year), lesson overviews and teaching suggestions for struggling students, ideas for further exploration, tear out activity pages that will be used throughout the year (you may wish to laminate for durability), project and manipulative supply list, and reduced student pages with answers to all problems. The Student Book also includes a weblink and password to Book Extras, which offers a variety of helpful links including additional practice sheets if needed. Tests are not included for Levels 1 and 2. The hefty All-in-One Student Text and Workbook provides the lessons, activities, and consumable worksheets. If teaching more than one child, each will need their own copy. Core components are available separately or as a set.

This exciting new curriculum offers homeschool families an engaging, hands-on program that focuses on mastery of math concepts. Parents will be pleasantly surprised at how manageable the interactive lessons are to teach, and children are sure to be won over by the projects and the application of math to the world around them. ~ Deanne

5 Key Components to Exploring Creation with Mathematics, Level 2

This curriculum is designed around five key components essential to a successful elementary math program. These components were designed based on the author’s experience as a math teacher in both the homeschool co-op and school classroom settings:

  • FUN! The design of each lesson and the carefully crafted activities present math as an accessible and exciting subject. If students are flipping ahead to see what’s next, they will bring enthusiasm and openness to each new lesson. These positive emotions make it easier for their brains to soak up the content.
  • Skills Practice. At the elementary level, a sizable part of the content includes math facts that must be memorized. Other skills must be rehearsed over a longer period of time for mastery to occur. Main skills are introduced in each lesson and strategically practiced 5-10 minutes a day. Click the button below to read more about skills practice in Apologia Math for elementary grades.
  • Christian Connection. Each unit in Exploring Creation with Mathematics begins with a Seeing Our Creator section that connects God to the concepts the student will be learning. Math is part of creation, and it mirrors aspects of God’s character; His beauty, faithfulness, and love can all be seen when studying math.
  • Carefully Crafted Conceptual Content. The progression of each unit is carefully mapped out to offer just the right level of challenge each day. At the end of each unit, students apply what they learned to the fields of art, science, or business through a cumulative project.
  • Ease of Use. The structure is simple: each day, complete the lesson & skills practice on the daily schedule. The answer key contains the answers, teacher’s notes, suggestions for the lessons, and reusable pages you need to complete the course.

It has hand on math. I like that it mixes up book work with games. I like how it looked to break down how they learn.

We have so enjoyed the science series we decided to try the math as well. Starts each day with a game, uses hands activities but not overly so, good variety of activities, and includes God.

My son enjoys a bit of a challenge and I think will enjoy what this series has to offer.

This looks like a great math curriculum with lots of hands on activities, but without the requirement for purchasing expensive manipulatives. Can't wait to try it out!

It made math hands on for us. Which makes learning it so much easier for kids. I like the order it goes in.

Gentle, engaging, thorough!
At first glance this looks too easy for 2nd grade, but now that I've used it a bit I think it's perfect, I thought my son would find this boring. He is fairly advanced in math concepts but as we were going through a more advanced curriculum earlier this year I felt that his speed/recall just didn't quite match up with the difficulty of the math course, and just because he *can* do more difficult math equations doesn't mean it's the best course. I decided to slow down the new concepts and work on a really solid foundation. So, while the first half of this program is absolute review for him, it is giving him a more thorough and better internalized understanding of those basic math facts used for all the rest of math. I thought he'd be bored, that it'd be too easy for him, but he has really enjoyed the games/activities in every lesson. Simple things like tossing a pillow back and forth 100 times really gives a true understanding of how big that number is in ways that looking at 100 tiny dots on a page doesn't quite communicate. Very Pleased!
