The Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C student workbooks provides pre-literacy instruction and reinforcing exercises with a focus on visual identification of consonants, their written lowercase letter forms and their sound-symbol relationships. Each lesson addresses the principles of effective reading instruction and follows the same easy-to-use format. The Teachers Guide is required for providing listening exercises.

The Teachers Guide for Workbooks A, B and C expands on the skills presented in these books, providing teachers with various options for instruction and reinforcement. The wide variety of activities may be adapted for whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one learning situations.

The 60 Picture-Letter Cards can be used for supplementary visual and auditory work and match key words in the student workbooks. Letter cards allow students to practice letter identification and recognition. Picture-letter combination cards help students map sounds to symbols. Use with Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C workbooks.

The Workbooks, Explode The Code Books 1-8 focus on Phonemic Awareness, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension, and Writing. All workbooks have several review lessons and a posttest. Explode The Code Half Books (1 -6 ) focus on more practice and reinforcement with skills in workbooks 1-6.

Code Cards (1 card for every concept introduced in Books 1-3.) include suggestions for daily practice activities and games. Each card is marked with the book and page number on the concept, which it is introduced.

Teachers Guides (Books 1-8) incorporate a quick review, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension in every lesson. Suggestions for writing practice and differentiated instruction are provided for each lesson. Specific answers to the student pages are not offered, as the book assumes student and teacher will be completing these together. However, answers for pre-test and post-test questions are included. Please also note these books only cover the "whole" levels, not the 1/2 levels.

Explode The Code Placement Tests are designed to assess students encoding and decoding skills. All tests can be given in either a group setting or individually, with the exception of Test 4, which must be administered individually. Included are directions for administering and analyzing results; answer keys and reproducible test forms.

Category Description for Explode the Code:

A phonics program, utilizing workbooks, covering letter sounds and most phonograms. Ample practice using a variety of exercises helps children to both learn and reinforce reading skills. These are particularly well-conceived, with alternate (incorrect) choices containing most probable letter or word confusions. This will assure well-honed phonetic reading skills. There is plenty of practice here, so if you use these in conjunction with another phonics program (for reinforcement), you will want to pick and choose exercises or pages to complete. The "1/2" level books provide practice for the skills learned in the whole-level books Please note that Get Ready for the Code, Get Set for the Code, and Go for the Code no longer include teacher's guide inserts. A much-enhanced teacher's guide is now available separately, that contains teaching information and answers for these three books. Teacher's guides are available for upper levels as well, with each teacher's guide covering two levels.

The new second edition features some small changes from the original, including revised student instructions, some updated content and artwork, and revised stories in Book 7 and 8. There is also a new chart on the inside front cover of the teacher guides which shows the overall lesson routine.

My older 3 have all completed the Explode the Code series and I loved having them to help with the learning to read process. My fourth child will be finishing up this series in the next year of two and my youngest will be starting the series so I am buying the complete set to keep us stocked up for a little bit.

I used these books years ago when teaching special needs students. Now I am helping a granddaughter through "virtual" school and find she is having extreme difficulty with basic phonics skills. Hoping that she will tolerate these books well and close the gap in her reading skills.

I had the ist edition set and loved them, but I gave them away when I retired. I'm working again and wanted to use these with my students.

I have heard wonderful things about Explode the Code. My plan is to use this as an independent book for my girls as we go through All About Spelling. One of my girls is much older, but dyslexic. I think this could help reinforce what is taught in AAS. Also I am hoping it will help both my girls read better. I like how it help breaks down words into syllables, prefixes, base words, suffixes, etc. They both need to work on developing these skills.

I love that I can get all the books for my 1st and 2nd grader in one set. Buying it here saves me about $30 than if I purchased through their curriculum website.

I've used these workbooks for my previous kids. It's a fun and engaging phonics program if your child is good at working with workbooks. Not only do they read, but practice their handwriting, and they can even color the images since the pictures are not in color. Highly recommended!

My daughter has finished book 4, so I am buying the set so her younger sister can start at 1 and she can continue to 5. She is reading at a 5th grade level now (7yrs), so it's mostly for spelling skills at this point.

Excellent series that teaches reading and writing simultaneously
We started off with the Get Ready for the Code workbooks. I thought they were a great tool to teach writing and letter sounds at the same time. I was surprised that right at the start, the Explode the Code books has your kid starting to read, but it’s working great. We are only part way into the first book and my son can already read and write simple sentences. I highly recommend this curriculum. I suspect that it’s very well tailored to kinesthetic learners in particular.
