The Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C student workbooks provides pre-literacy instruction and reinforcing exercises with a focus on visual identification of consonants, their written lowercase letter forms and their sound-symbol relationships. Each lesson addresses the principles of effective reading instruction and follows the same easy-to-use format. The Teachers Guide is required for providing listening exercises.

The Teachers Guide for Workbooks A, B and C expands on the skills presented in these books, providing teachers with various options for instruction and reinforcement. The wide variety of activities may be adapted for whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one learning situations.

The 60 Picture-Letter Cards can be used for supplementary visual and auditory work and match key words in the student workbooks. Letter cards allow students to practice letter identification and recognition. Picture-letter combination cards help students map sounds to symbols. Use with Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C workbooks.

The Workbooks, Explode The Code Books 1-8 focus on Phonemic Awareness, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension, and Writing. All workbooks have several review lessons and a posttest. Explode The Code Half Books (1 -6 ) focus on more practice and reinforcement with skills in workbooks 1-6.

Code Cards (1 card for every concept introduced in Books 1-3.) include suggestions for daily practice activities and games. Each card is marked with the book and page number on the concept, which it is introduced.

Teachers Guides (Books 1-8) incorporate a quick review, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension in every lesson. Suggestions for writing practice and differentiated instruction are provided for each lesson. Specific answers to the student pages are not offered, as the book assumes student and teacher will be completing these together. However, answers for pre-test and post-test questions are included. Please also note these books only cover the "whole" levels, not the 1/2 levels.

Explode The Code Placement Tests are designed to assess students encoding and decoding skills. All tests can be given in either a group setting or individually, with the exception of Test 4, which must be administered individually. Included are directions for administering and analyzing results; answer keys and reproducible test forms.

Category Description for Explode the Code:

A phonics program, utilizing workbooks, covering letter sounds and most phonograms. Ample practice using a variety of exercises helps children to both learn and reinforce reading skills. These are particularly well-conceived, with alternate (incorrect) choices containing most probable letter or word confusions. This will assure well-honed phonetic reading skills. There is plenty of practice here, so if you use these in conjunction with another phonics program (for reinforcement), you will want to pick and choose exercises or pages to complete. The "1/2" level books provide practice for the skills learned in the whole-level books Please note that Get Ready for the Code, Get Set for the Code, and Go for the Code no longer include teacher's guide inserts. A much-enhanced teacher's guide is now available separately, that contains teaching information and answers for these three books. Teacher's guides are available for upper levels as well, with each teacher's guide covering two levels.

The new second edition features some small changes from the original, including revised student instructions, some updated content and artwork, and revised stories in Book 7 and 8. There is also a new chart on the inside front cover of the teacher guides which shows the overall lesson routine.

Explode the Code is a very highly rated, yet quite affordable means of teaching a child to read, write, and even spell. Based on the samples I downloaded, it seems very simple, easy, and fun for both teacher and student!

I read that this is a good supplement to other programs and is very much an independent activity. With lots of other children, I was looking for activities that were more independent to allow me time to work with other children. I hope it works out!

My youngest attends public school and is needing some extra help over the summer. We are going to start homeschooling him during the summer and will continue when he starts back in public school.

Explode the Code Book 1
Loving it! My grandson isn't even complaining about finishing schoolwork. We often complete his lesson and keep going until I tell him we have done more than one day. This is well thought out. He retains the lessons.

Our top choice
I’m a busy homeschool momma of 17 years. I have found the curricula that’s easy to use, simple, an efficient use of time, and gets the job done with minimal protest from the kids is what gets done at our house. Explode the Code fits the bill. I love that I can just pull it off the shelf and get to work. No teacher’s manual or anything I have to learn how to use. Books A, B, and C will teach the consonant sounds and book 1 introduces a sound for each vowel so they’re sounding out words soon after they start book 1. Simple black and white drawn illustrations keep the focus on the material while the occasional silly or nonsensical sentence rewards the students effort with a little fun.
The books use the same activities with each new sound so my students know what to do and have been able to complete some pages on their own. This gives me a few extra minutes in my morning and my students get practice working independently, keeping themselves on task, and the a sense of accomplishment.

We finish 3-4 books in a year schooling year round but the recommended pace is 2 books a year I think.

Explode the Code is also one of the most budget friendly options available. None of my 6 students have needed the 1/2 books but they are available if your student needs some extra practice with something before moving on to the next book.

Love this!
My daughter has apraxia of speech & we have tried many different reading programs. This one is the perfect fit for her because of the repetition in each lesson. I love the teacher manual & highly recommend using it with the workbooks. My daughter struggles with writing too, so we have made a few adjustments to the writing pages. We may use letter tiles or do the lesson aloud together. But, most of the time she actually enjoys the writing part! We love Explode the Code!
