We have used CQLA for 4 years now. I really like the all inclusive curriculum grammar, dictation, spelling and writing. Although, I would like to see more vocabulary used in the curriculum.

Time is extremely valuable to each of us Homeschooling parents have the added challenge however of balancing responsibilities inside and outside the home with the education of their children Character Quality Language Arts accomplished in our home numerous academic objectives and character training without the time-consuming task of trying to reinvent the wheel With confidence we were able to teach various language arts components centered around character qualities from Donna Reish's labor of love Her heart for teaching character leaps off every page as we learned from weekly copywork and dictation passages vocabulary work spelling editing grammar and writing instruction in several genres For example in unit 4 Week 1 of level B my sixth grader copied a passage on Paul and Silas looked up two words from the passage and wrote her own definitions edited a passage on persecution of believers wrote a key word outline from the passage studied pronouns highlighting them in the passage and finding them in sentences rewrote the passage from the keyword outline studied "Ing" openers and wrote six sentences using them edited and revised her rewrite using a checklist studied words used to show order took a dictation quiz on the passage and rewrote a final copy of her report While we did not use the spelling lessons included this time around I will definitely use them in the future Some week plans we stretched out over two or three weeks due to the challenging composition The extra time allowed my daughter to produce writing she was proud of even if we used the curriculum at a slower pace Extra practice options or "Further study" sidebars make the curriculum incredibly meaty After talking with the author she explained that you cannot possibly complete everything but the ideas are there for those that need extra review or desire to use it as a mini-unit study These options also allow students at varying levels to "ramp up" to a higher level or just do the basics Further study options include reading book suggestions copying Scripture passages for penmanship learning a song watching a specific movie or examining a science Bible or history topic in-depth Weekly copywork/ dictation passages editor duty and grammar work are all related to the character quality Character is further taught through "Character connection" sidebars with definitions and statements related to the character quality We loved how each child was studying the same quality at different levels Problems keeping everyone on the same week arose later in the year unfortunately as one child was able to keep up the pace suggested by the author and the other slowed down to master the composition assignments Diligently we plodded through the challenging grammar and composition growing stronger in ability with every assignment As my daughter's teacher I learned concepts for the first time that have improved my ability to write well and understand grammar! The student pages explain everything to the student (or in my case mom too) Answers and weekly teacher helps are included at the end of each week with some in sidebars too and can be pulled out for mom's use or left behind each week's pages Our method entailed removing one unit at a time and placing it in a small three-pronged folder as the hefty size of the entire program was awkward to handle While most of what you need to teach is in the student pages there is also a teacher's guide which includes an explanation of how to use the program exact teaching notes on grammar and writing genres from the student pages organized together master checklists and how-to's for editing sample lessons and finally for those of us who need to see the whole picture an overview of each character trait and a scope and sequence for each color and level I especially appreciated the overview of each character quality as I was planning our year; it listed detailed areas of study definitions of the character quality related Bible passages and optional materials to implement The scope and sequence pages allowed me to see at a glance the passage topic spelling rules editor duty topic grammar concept and composition topic for each week at each level (Rainbow's review explained the levels well) To use CQLA successfully you will need a dictionary thesaurus notebook or looseleaf paper and CQLA Spelling notebook Highlighters and sticky notes were frequently used for assignments also Additionally if you choose to make "grammar cards" explaining grammar rules you will need to purchase index cards Optional extras for reference include biographies Bible concordance Bible dictionary Bible encyclopedia hymn stories and Character Sketches with accompanying coloring books These extras are simply that; the curriculum stands solid on its own without them Besides well-chosen biographies the optional materials we bought were rarely used Many hours have been invested in creating this complete language arts program It is worth the price and commitment level in implementing itGratefully I don't need to reinvent the wheel Mrs Reish has successfully written a fantastic language arts program to keep us rolling towards our family education and character goals

This is a great step by step curriculum for students who "just want to know what they have to do" to "get it done". LOL!
