Category Description for Key To Math (Gr. 4-12):

The Key To... series is a very self-instructional, unintimidating, programmed learning series. Covering seven basic topics, students can work through these horizontally or vertically. They are ideal for "homework" or a more topical approach to the subject. Presentation is done in a simple, friendly manner, incrementally, and with examples to follow as needed. Workbooks are thin and consumable. Answer keys are recommended. Order by the book or in sets.

We like this series because it encourages children to tackle these subject areas in as much depth as they can, rather than working strictly within the confines of an age-graded math program. Starting in 4th or 5th grade, I purchased a complete set of student workbooks for each child. Book 1 in each topic was put on the school book shelf. When Key to... was assigned, my children were free to work on whatever topic they chose, and they worked as much as they wanted. As soon as Book 1 in any subject was completed, it was replaced by Book 2. My oldest daughter sometimes got so involved that she just kept going!

Did a lot research and learned that these books are great for kids that need instruction with step-by-step examples. They are grouped into many separate books so they progress with a sense of accomplishment instead of studying out of a monolithic book.

My son used this curriculum last year (8th grade pre-algebra) and he really helped him.
We are purchasing this curriculum to supplement the 9th grade algebra that we are doing with a different program. I'm sure this will help him to better understand and to do better.

Key To Algebra has worked well for my students in the past. It cuts the subject up into small chunks and makes the student feel like he is making quicker progress. It gives simple, clear explanations and uses word problems with familiar examples to apply algebra to real life. It's very affordable. It's very individualized.

It is an easy way for them to learn all kinds of math skills. I have used "Key to Fractions" with all my kids, and it really helped them totally grasp fractions. That is why I decided to try out the "Keys to Algebra", so they will have a very clear grasp on it before they go into high school algebra.

These books were recommended to me. I think the simple booklet to booklet approach will work well for my child who easily gets intimidated by large Math books.

My daughter is home schooled and entering 7th grade in August. We use the Math In Focus - Singapore Math series and will be using the Key to Algebra series as a supplemental in order to prepare for high school Algebra.
Ilona O on Apr 17, 2018
I have never taught Algebra using Key, but I am very familiar with their other math material.
Hence, I am relying on my past experiences with the success Key has brought to very math challenged students to produce the same joy in learning. I look forward to the spacing, typing, print size and number of problems on each page to support ease in acquiring new concepts.

Based on other reviews, these books look like they might be helpful for my daughter to improve algebra skills. I like the 10 booklet format as opposed to a large textbook. It seems like the math will not overwhelm my daughter who is not a huge fan of math. The books were cheaper here than on Amazon!

BEST ANSWER: No it does not you have to order that seprate
Would you consider the Key to Algebra books a full Algebra course for non-math students?
Nathan T on Feb 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I would say that it gets the student 85 to 90% of the way there because it clearly and simply teaches the language of Algebra. If a student is going on to Algebra 2 it would be wise to supplement it with something a little more hard core ( not common core) that will challenge him or her after learning the basics. I consider Key to Algebra series an excellent confidence builder.

Best of the best!
We LOVE the Key To books. I have 3 children. For math, we’ve had 2 different learning styles. These books are great because they do a lot of review and then dive right in. They complete one and then move on to the next. Very informative and self explanatory.
For us, it gave a feeling of accomplishment and understanding.

Good program for those who need practice
I would definitely recommend Key to for anyone who needs a simple straightforward introduction to a math subject with a good selection of similar problems on one page. So far it is working well for my son who struggles with remembering how to do math computation. I like how it is one topic per page.

Superb introduction to algebra
I am not, NOT a math brain teaching a non-math-brained kid, so discovering a logical, sequential explanation that makes few presuppositions is refreshing, to say the least. One huge benefit is that the math calculations aspect, at least in the beginning books, is minimized to allow students to work with algebraic concepts but not struggle with the number crunching. We are a no-calculators-allowed family, so this is a big plus. Generally it is pretty easy. I will follow this series up with a standard Algebra 1 text. For some the easy nature of the examples and practice problems may be off-putting. For us it's a perfect fit.

Excellent Review Books
For students who are struggling with algebra or students who need to review before they go on to more advanced math classes, these workbooks are wonderful. They have great examples followed by enough problems for the student to gain the practice they need. The set isn't as comprehensive as a traditional algebra course but I do recommend it for review. I use them for tutoring. Note that the answers are not in the workbooks--they are in the Answers & Notes books (one for books 1-4, one for books 5-7, and another for books 8-10). There is also a set of books that have pretests and post tests and answer keys for those.

We purchased the entire curriculum package to help my son bring up his SAT scores We also purchased the entire Geometry course and worked them side-by-side My son scored 1175 on the SAT earlier in the year and needed a 1200 to gain a scholarship After talking to some parents who had gone through the same thing they had told me that the most they were able to gain in the second (and even third) testing was 10 additional points and could not break the 1200 barrier We plowed ahead with the Key-to's in spite of this hoping for the best!I can attest that you get a lot of bang for your buck! These aren't flashy textbooks or workbooks but the content is easy to understand and sequential Each booklet covers a different topic/skill to master You get plenty of practice without it being overwhelming The answer key helps explain the concepts thoroughly and what pitfalls to watch for Even I had many "Aha! Now I understand why!" moments while going through these with my son I had Algebra in high school and I really didn't understand what I was doing or why but the Key-to's helped take away my fear of being able to teach Algebra After completing all the workbooks my son improved his SAT score by a whopping 90 points and he gained an academic scholarship! I can't thank Key-to enough for this helpful course! My math-phobic daughter is now using these and she enjoys them (that's a BIG accomplishment in itself to say that she "enjoys" anything having to do with math)! These workbooks may be considered "too easy" for your typical math genius but for my artistic right-brained math-phobic daughter these were perfect She gets overwhelmed with too many explanations too much logical detail etc that her brain shuts down as her frustration levels go up! The Key-to's were perfect for her She could read them and easily understand the concepts and she gained confidence as she completed each assignment The concept would be introduced and examples laid out of how to do the problem and a page or two of large-type problems to work This was enough for her She wants to take the problem apply the method to solving the problem and be done with it This may sound like a pitfall but realistically she will never be an engineer astronaut or architect (hopefully she'll marry one! ;) But these are plenty adequate for a complete Algebra course!I like how the concepts are broken down into little booklets that are easy to carry around The 10 booklets are less than a quarter-inch thick and printed on newsprint-type paper (nothing glossy) It's so easy to grab the booklets and go to piano lessons I can sit and check their work while they play or they can work in them while a sibling is engaged in their piano lesson It's so nice not having to carry a bulky textbook around Whenever anyone asks me "What math curriculum do you use?" I say "KEY TO all the way!"
