Category Description for All About Spelling:

All About Spelling was specifically designed for homeschoolers and tutors with scripted lessons that take the guesswork out of teaching. It has a bunch of helpful features great for one-on-one instruction. All About Spelling takes a multisensory approach so that the student can be successful in spelling regardless of his particular learning style. The program can be customized for each student, with daily review of concepts the individual needs to cover. For each level, you will need the Teacher Manual, student Materials packet and either the Basic or Deluxe Interactive Kit. The Interactive Kit components are used with all levels of the program but are NOT included in the Teacher Manuals or Student Material Packets so you will need to purchase one of them initially as you begin the program. For the teacher, the lessons are scripted for pick-up-and-go daily usage, with plenty of teaching tips built into the lesson right where you need them. Take a little time to read about 10 pages to familiarize yourself with the programs approach, punch out and sort the materials provided, and youre ready to roll!

The key to this program is learning phonograms, which are the sounds that a letter or letter combination make. Using this approach, after learning his phonograms, a student knows what his choices are for spelling that particular sound. Different researchers have come up with different numbers of phonograms that exist in the English language. The phonograms used here are based on the work of neurologist Dr. Samuel Orton and psychologist Anna Gillingham and includes 72 phonograms that the student learns and uses over the 7 levels. Each level includes a teacher book and a student materials packet. The Interactive Kits contain items used with all 7 levels, including divider cards, durable color-coded phonogram tiles, and optional peel-and-stick magnets used with the phonogram tiles so that they can be used on a magnetic board as well as a level surface. Instructions for downloading the Phonogram Sounds App from the publishers website are included. The only other items youll need are an index card box (unless you choose the Deluxe Interactive Kit) and lined notebook paper. Levels are not related to grade levels, but rather skill levels (our suggested grade levels are just a rough guide of where many students will be). Each book contains around 25 steps, or lessons. Some of the major concepts covered in each level are mentioned below. 400-450 words are specifically covered in each level, but remember that these are really example words; the program is giving the student the tools to spell any word using the phonogram approach.

In Level 1, students first learn the 26 most basic phonograms corresponding to the letters of the alphabet. Unlike phonics programs, which tend to teach short vowel sounds and hard consonants sounds first, All About Spelling teaches all possible sounds for each phonogram. For instance, the letter (and phonogram) A can make a short A sound (apple), a long A sound (acorn), and the "ah" sound (water). Phonograms are shown on yellow Phonogram Cards in the student materials packet with the letter or letter combination on the front. On the back are the sounds made by that phonogram, and a key word with that sound. Student or teacher can also listen to the pronunciation on the Phonogram Sounds App by clicking on the color-coded phonogram; after the initial letters, phonograms are grouped here and elsewhere in the program according to vowel and consonant "teams". After the phonograms are learned, oral exercises are included in the book to ensure that the student can discriminate the sounds in a word and identify the phonogram that he hears. Another exercise has the teacher dictate a sound from a Sound Card (red) to ensure that the student can write the phonogram that is spoken. Key Cards (blue) are used to highlight definitions or spelling rules. Word Cards (green) contain words used to test the students understanding; the student either spells the words using the phonogram tiles or writes the words on paper.

While this may sound complicated, the teacher book couldnt be easier to follow. Goals for each step are shown at the beginning of each step, as well as specific materials needed. Review begins every lesson, and the concepts and words being reviewed are based on areas that the student needs practice. Pictures of the particular cards or tiles used in the lesson are shown at the point of use in the book. Lessons have just the right amount of scripting so the teacher is never at a loss for what to say or do next. Additional words for practicing a just-learned concept are also given. Teaching tips and side notes are right where you would expect them. A cardstock Progress Chart shows the students advancement through the steps of each level; upon completion the student gets a suitable-for-framing Certificate of Achievement.

This spelling program is designed to be used with students who can read at a beginning level (able to read consonant-vowel-consonant words and words with blends such as stop and fast). Also, keep in mind that this program focuses entirely on spelling and does not include vocabulary.

This spelling program is unique in its multisensory approach to teaching spelling, and may help students succeed who might otherwise struggle. Kudos to author Marie Rippel for putting together such a well-designed program for student and teacher alike. ~ Bob

Packets contain phonogram cards, sound cards, key cards, word cards, syllable tags, syllable division rules, word banks, Jail for Rule Breakers, progress chart, certificate of achievement, stickers, and other items specific to that level.

My 5th grader has many symptoms of dyslexia and has struggled with spelling for years. It is a daily battle that many times leaves her in tears. My hope is that this curriculum will be a much better fit for her than what we have tried in the past. We switched to a hands-on approach for math last school year and have seen a huge difference in her understanding - I am hoping to see the same thing with this hands-on curriculum.

My friend has used this for her children and I have read a few positive blog reviews about this spelling curriculum. I like the idea of teaching my child how to spell as opposed to memorizing a list of words for a week as I have done with my oldest.

I chose this program because I'm starting the All About Reading Level 1 materials as well. My son struggles with confidence and becomes frustrated with reading, so this more comprehensive program for Spelling and Reading should assist with helping him learn, retain, and feel confident with what he knows.

I was looking for a spelling program to use with my kids for after they complete Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. Age-wise my kids will be in Kindergarten and 1st grade when we use this, but thanks to TYCtR, they're already reading beyond their grade levels. I like the tactile/kinesthetic approach AAS takes and read a lot of great reviews of this program, so I'm going to try it out!

Tried MCP Spelling Workout with my daughter and wasn't thrilled with the method or the result. I moved her into Sequential Spelling and it clearly wasn't working for her - she really needs something visual that she can manipulate. Fingers crossed that this is the answer!

The Basic Interactive Kit includes the phonetic sound app, letter tiles and magnets, and the divider cards.

BEST ANSWER: AAS Level 1 should actually be started with AAR Level 2, after you have finished AAR Level 1. If you already have the letter tiles from AAS, then you don't necessarily need to buy an interactive kit. The divider cards are different between AAS and AAR, but you can actually buy those separately on the All About Learning Press website. Hope that helps!
Why is there no information on whether this is PDF or printed or both?
A shopper on Jun 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The teacher's manual is a soft cover book. The student packet consists of various papers and cards, mostly on card stock. The cards are still all attached on perforated paper and you will need to separate them and organize them. On the All About Learning Press website, there is a place to print extra copies of the student progress chart and achievement certificate. Click on the student packet for whichever level you want and scroll down. You should see it. Nothing in this set is a PDF.
What do I need to purchase to get started with All About Spelling?
A shopper on May 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Level 1 Materials include a Teacher Book and a Student Kit (i.e. cards). In addition to these Level 1 Materials, you will need either the Basic or the Deluxe Interactive kit. These supply the letter tiles and magnets as well as the dividers for the cards. The Deluxe kit also provides a tote bag and storage box (i.e. review box) for the cards. For subsequent AAS levels, all you will need to purchase is the Materials set for the level.
Do the tiles match the All About Reading tiles?
A shopper on Aug 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the tiles do match the All About Reading tiles, but if you have an older version of the Spelling program (level 2 and up), then 3 of the syllable tiles have been renamed and reillustrated--the CLE is now called "pickle", the VCE is now renamed "name game" and has a new picture with it, and the r-controlled syllable tag is now called "bossy r" and has new graphics. Same concepts.

Great program
As with any curriculum, you have to learn how to use it, but it's well worth it! It has helped our struggling spellers already in the first couple of days!

So far it is meeting my kid's needs
Last year I used a more traditional program for my first grade daughter. After some tears and loosing confidence in herself, I decided to put the subject spelling away and put more focus on reading skills. This year, I switched to using All About Spelling for her. We are not very far into the program, but I think so far it is helping her regain some of the confidence she had lost last year. I am hoping this is program will give her the freedom to build the foundation she needs for future spelling success at her pace. Plus it uses multiple learning styles and we can start and stop as attention span and time allows for the day.

Very Solid program!
Very solid program. It’s perfect for a kid who learns well with rule based learning. My son finds rule based learning the easiest to understand. Also, it’s a great program if your child isn’t a fan of hand writing. I highly recommend! We are done with book 2 and his annual evaluator said my son is above grade level in spelling!

Wish we’d found AAS sooner
You know those students who are highly intelligent, yet for whatever reason and despite every effort to learn, cannot spell the simplest words? That was my daughter. She read well, understood all sorts of grammar and usage rules, yet despised writing. (Who wants to write when you have to ask how to spell every other word?). We had a smart fifth grader who said she felt stupid.

So I scoured online homeschool reviews about Spelling curricula. All About Spelling sounded like it just might work. I asked my daughter if she was willing to give it a real try, for a year, and she agreed.

What a difference! As an older student, she moved through Levels 1 and 2 fairly fast. We stick to the AAS program and metholdology, step by step, and it’s working! She’s catching on and feeling so much better about her skills that she actually thanked me for getting AAS. I would give AAS 20 stars.

Worth the Money
I am a veteran homeschool mom and I bought All About Spelling because I thought that it would be good for my active son who is already reading and spelling some; but, had gaps to fill in. I am very pleased. It's a pleasure to use because the layout is organized and simple and the kinesthetic use of the letter tiles and tokens keeps my son focused. In the past, I have used the typical books that give a list each week to drill and quiz; but, those weren't very effective because once the quiz was done, they forgot those words' spelling! All About Spelling uses the same approach to the phonograms as The Writing Road to Reading; but, I could never get enthusiastic about that program - somehow I just felt overwhelmed by the format. With All About Spelling, it's fun. I love the file system for the flash cards - what a great way to keep track of what needs to be drilled, what's been mastered, etc. Why didn't I think of that! So far, this program has given me a couple other 'Aha' moments, too!

Favorite curriculum!
This is probably my favorite homeschool curriculum of any subject. I didn't know how to teach spelling before getting this and didn't want to just make my daughter memorize lists of words. As soon as we started AAS, her spelling improved dramatically. Love the hands on approach and systematic teaching of spelling rules. Even I am learning things I didn't know and I'm a natural speller!
