Category Description for Bju Press Heritage Studies

This complete social studies curriculum assumes a strong Christian worldview that is meaningful and relevant in today’s world. It reflects a conservative evangelical perspective and would be a good choice for many Christians because of its Godly perspective. Heritage Studies uses a narrative approach making the books more interesting and provides a look at how God has interacted with human events to establish His kingdom, and give students an opportunity to study historical figures and events through the lens of God’s Word. In addition to the historical aspect of Heritage Studies, students are invited to evaluate concepts, cultural values, economic issues, and government systems using Scripture. By teaching the past, students become aware of the present and are better able to understand and think critically about issues they will face. Heritage Studies strives to present a balanced view of history and challenges students to think for themselves.

Many of the texts have been updated and revised in recent years. Student Texts are colorful and non-consumable. Teacher Editions are full of resources (these will vary between editions), and usually include reduced student pages, teaching tips, background and supplemental information, and answer keys. Newer editions also include a Toolkit CD, which includes maps, visuals, instructional aids, Activity Manual Answer Keys (in some cases), and more. Activity Manuals include full-color pages to review and enrich lessons. Activity Manual Answer Keys are student activity manual pages with answers filled in – in some cases the Activity Manual answers are found in the teacher edition for that level.  Tests are non-reproducible and come in a packet with one test per chapter; Tests Answer Keys are student tests with the answers filled in. A Visuals Packet is available for grade 1 (optional) and includes a timeline, maps, pictures, interactive figures, and full-color charts. Home School Kits include the required materials for teaching Heritage Studies at each grade level, and usually includes a Student Text, Teacher Edition, Activity Manual, Activity Manual Answer Key (where needed), Tests, and Tests Answer Keys.

Category Description for Bju Press American Republic (5th Ed.)

A historical study emphasizes what people have done, but also exposes what those people believed and valued. This Bob Jones curriculum spans the key US (as well as world-influenced) events and viewpoints which built and shaped the American values of religion, gratitude, justice, freedom, growth, equality, and individualism. Students will examine these events through a Biblical worldview lens, identifying the values and beliefs, and then considering them all in light of the Gospel. The emphasis is also on using moral lessons from the past to make wise future decisions. Generally following national standards for US history, this course begins with Native American cultures prior to European colonization and ends with President Biden's inauguration. The course does not shy away from controversial topics. For example, you'll study treatment of indigenous peoples and slaves, cultural panics of various kinds, negative effects of US policies, acts of terrorism, and even the negative consequences of technology. While content is carefully chosen and discussed, students will "see" history as it unfolds via illustrations and primary source documents. Students will engage with this potentially challenging content and reading level via activities from the Activity Book, discussions, and writing assignments, which also provides opportunities for family analysis and discussion. Be aware that the Articles of Confederation and the US Constitution are overviewed in one chapter. If this is your student's first study of the Constitution, it may feel somewhat overwhelming. In addition, you'll want to verify whether this study will meet your state's Constitution study requirements. See our page samples for further information and for a free Lesson Plan Overview PDF. The Homeschool Kit (© 2022) includes all items recommended for the full course: student text (696 pgs, pb); teacher edition, parts 1 & 2 (677 pgs total, spiral-bound front pb, back hc); student activities book (Consumable, 248 pgs, pb); activities book answer key (spiral-bound, 248 pgs, pb); assessments (consumable, 160 pgs, perfect bound, perforated); and assessment answer key (3-hole punched, shrink wrapped, 160 pgs).
