Description

Brightly colorful with engaging stories, this set of 26 readers (one for each letter) leads students down the path to literacy one letter at a time. Eighteen-page books are 7"x 9". Mat Man® – Handwriting Without Tears' letter stroke mascot – introduces each letter with a cheerful “Are you ready? Are you set? It's time for the alphabet!" Uppercase and lowercase versions of the book's letter are provided on each page. Stories are simple – one sentence per page – with illustrations fleshing out the story. Letter sounds abound – in both phonetical short-vowels and other more advanced phonics or sight-word-ish options such as jellyfish, goat, or bagels. Designed to increase phonemic awareness with a hearty injection of fun, each book ends with questions that focus on letter learning, meaning making, and figuring out feelings. The back cover of the book sums up its focus with a handy chart: words to sound out, sight words to say, and story words to hear. The reader set includes a short family guide that includes a how-to-use overview, along with some fun family ideas such as a letter-of-the-day meal and story questions to ask. Also included are some activities pages and a completion certificate.

The Get Set for School program is the high quality program you would expect from Handwriting Without Tears. This program was designed specifically for the preschool years, and uses the fun methods you would expect for that age. This program employs a unique, multisensory approach which prepares children to write. Children will play, build, sing, color and learn while developing important skills. Readiness & Writing Pre-K Teacher's Guide, now in its 8th edition, provides everything you need to understand the program and developmental stages to effectively teach the lessons. Topically, children learn the alphabet, letter and number recognition and formation, counting, shapes, colors and drawing. The writing focus is on uppercase letters, while lowercase letters are taught toward the end of the year (beginning in Week 30) using the My First Lowercase Book. Complete explanations are given on how to use the suggested manipulatives. Lessons are easy to use and there is a suggested 36 week schedule found in the front of the book. Crayon skills are developed while using special pages for scribbling and coloring. Strokes are practiced on "Mat Man" before ever making a letter. Capital letters and numbers are then practiced using a crayon. There are also extra activity pages which check readiness skills.

I Know My Numbers is a set of 10 small horizontal booklets (14 pgs ea), each centered on a number 1-10 that a student methodically works through as they practice writing and understanding these numbers. They are full of charming black and white illustrations and clear instruction. Little Chalk Bits is a good sized box (about 6.5"x 4"x 2) full of 1 pieces of thin (1cm) white chalk. This will go a long way! Little Sponge Cubes is a set of 100 (50 yellow/50 blue) small cubes (1cm) of kitchen sponge. Just right for tiny fingers to erase with!

This is a wonderful introduction to the world of handwriting for the preschool child. We offer several packages with both the most essential and also with recommended items for the program to fit your budget.

A follow up book to preschool is Kick Start Kindergarten, which reviews upper and lowercase letters, or the Kindergarten program, Letters and Numbers for Me.
Category Description for Mat Man A-Z

Mat Man® is the cute and clever mascot that shows up repeatedly in the elementary material from Handwriting Without Tears. Built from the program's letter strokes with its "mat" for a body, Mat Man's limbs and head look unsurprisingly like the Capital Wood Pieces®. His happily whimsical facial expressions communicate over-and-over again that learning – particularly learning to read and write – is FUN! These Mat Man® and Me literacy materials from HWOT are just the latest example.

Components include Mat Man® and the Great Alphabet Parade (a brightly colorful, read-aloud alphabet book), the Individual Reader Set (26 beginning readers with Family Guide), a Teacher Guide, and two practice workbooks which are coordinated with the HWOT kindergarten and first grade levels – Practice for Emerging Readers and Practice for Developing Readers. These practice workbooks provide pages that correlate to each Reader. In addition, there are packages that include combinations of these components.

Completely interconnected with the HWOT program, Readers incorporate the handwriting style in terms of letter presentation and the Practice Workbooks provide letter stroke instruction and HWOT's distinctive writing lines. The Emerging Readers workbook sports the orange color associated with the kindergarten program, while Developing Readers has the first-grade color of yellow. The two workbooks are similar to each other with letter, word, and/or sentence copywork plus an Understanding the Story segment for each book. These segments cover events, setting, and characters from the story. The Teacher Guide provides lesson plans that weave the components together emphasizing letter learning and comprehension (meaning making).

This series is an engaging introduction to letters and letter sounds. Although coordinated with both the Kindergarten and First Grade level of HWOT, you would most likely use it with one OR the other level. Unless your student needed the content repetition, you would not use them sequentially. ~ Janice
