Description

Sociology is considered a ‘soft' science. Students build societal awareness in a way that helps them understand their own behavior, in groups and as individuals. With thoughtful analysis, students explore cultures, relationships and institutions that make up society. With the lessons in the book, your student will be prepared for introductory college level sociology courses. This counts as one high school elective credit (not a science or a social studies credit). The lessons are quite teacher-friendly, and some students would be able to use this course independently. There is, however, quite a bit of group-generated work as well as discussions with the teacher that would be challenging to replicate. The textbook does include content for the student to read, followed by questions and assignments where answers will vary. Your student will learn about themselves as they dive into their feelings about a wide variety of topics such as influence, perspectives, theories, social problems and constructs, the research process, fieldwork, death, media, economies, religion, mental health, industry, social movements, globalization, adulthood, aging, peers, norms, surveillance, privilege, poverty, race, gender equality, global inequality. There is a lesson on sexuality in advertising, which I looked at with a careful eye. The questions are quite open to the student's opinion. Only certain pages may be reproduced. ~Sara
