Under the Hawthorn Tree
The potato famine has just struck Ireland in the 1840s. With no work in the local area, John Driscoll leaves to earn some money at the roadworks. With father gone and their money spent, the family is only left with a small amount of food rations. Little Bridget, Margaret O'Driscoll's baby, is very sick—as are a good number of people in the village. After a series of events, the job opportunities collapse, leaving the people to fend for themselves. Margaret, in yearning of her husband's overdue return, leaves the cottage to search after him. After quite some time of being left to fend for themselves, the three surviving children have no time to wait for the miracle of a possible arrival by their parents. Since there is no work, money, or food in the land, survivors see escaping as their only means of continued survival. The journey is long, and the chances bleak, but the children are not willing to give up. This winner of the International Reading Association Award is based on true historical events. This inspirational story shows the bravery and tragedy of the times, as well as the hope and endurance of the starving Irish community. 123 pgs, pb.
