Description
Using guided discovery, this worktext progresses through each topic in a way that gradually builds up the complexity and allows students to work at their own pace. Includes eleven sections, cumulative review, and extra practice for each section. Students can use this program after a standard pre-algebra course. There are plenty of math problems and some are comparable to standardized test problems. Answers are in the back for students to check their work. ~ Gina
Publisher's Description of Summit Math Algebra 1 Book 6: Systems of Linear Equations & Inequalities (2nd Edition)

In this book, students find the intersection point of two lines by looking at their graphs. They then learn that they can find the intersection point by using algebraic methods called substitution and elimination. They use these methods to solve a variety of scenarios that can be modeled by two variables and two equations. They also learn how to graph systems of linear inequalities. Near the end of the book, they analyze a variety of scenarios that involve linear systems, while also getting a preview of nonlinear systems, which is a topic they will learn more about in Algebra 2: Book 6. This book builds on Algebra 1: Book 2.

Topics in this book:

  • Using equations to find an intersection point
  • The substitution method
  • The elimination method
  • When two lines do not intersect at a single point
  • Scenarios that involve systems of equations
  • Systems of linear inequalities
  • More scenarios that involve systems of equations
  • Cumulative Review
  • Answer Key
Category Description for Summit Math Algebra

If you are searching for an independent algebra program or a supplement to teach specific algebra concepts, Summit Math is worth your consideration. Using the guided discovery method, students make their own connections as they learn to master each scenario before moving on to the next. Each section builds on previous concepts already learned. The first half of the book incorporates the guided discovery approach, while the latter half uses extra practice sheets to improve understanding of the topics. Each section has an answer key. A placement test and pacing guide is provided for each level. The author states this is a complete program teaching typical topics in the Algebra I and II sequence while preparing students for standardized testing. If students feel they need extra instruction, a video subscription is available from the publisher. Free downloadable tests and a more detailed version of the answer key are also available at the publisher's website.
