Book of Art Skills (Usborne)
This is an excellent resource for students to learn specific techniques in a variety of mediums. The pages show step-by-step color photos accompanied by clear written instructions. It is assumed that you have some basic art supplies, but you are also encouraged to play with the effects of more unusual things. There are over 120 fabulous, inspiring ideas! Projects include: a tissue collage, a paint-drag cityscape, potato-stamped birds, cardboard texturing, a rainy watercolor sky, and so many more. The less common supplies include oil pastels, Bristol paper, gouache, colored tissue paper, inks, and 90# watercolor paper. More common supplies include acrylic and watercolor paints, chalk pastels, permanent felt-tip pens (e.g. Sharpies) and magazines. I think this book has enough content to be considered a middle school art program (though not enough for a high school credit.) It would also make a fantastic gift item for an artsy child! 8.5"x 11", 96 pgs, pb. ~Sara
