Description

The setting is 1906 in San Francisco, California. A young man named Brenden works on Market Street as a delivery boy, using a horse-drawn wagon to deliver goods and fresh bread to local customers and businesses. He is living a routine day when he nearly runs over a Chinese girl. The Chinese citizens rarely left China Town for fear discriminating tortures. The girl had been running from her uncle who is planning an arranged marriage with an older businessman. An arrangement that the young girl, Li Dai Yue, despises because he is “old and mean." Just as Brendan jumps off the wagon to ensure her safety, the ground starts trembling and howling. The howling is so loud he can't hear or feel anything but the earth's convulsions and the girl grasping his hand out of fear. The tall, magnificent buildings are now swaying and crumbling. The meandering tram tracks contort and twist next to gaping holes in the earth's surface. What will become of them, stranded in the middle of the street in despair? There's little time before they're covered by falling debris, but just the act of standing seems impossible, let alone running. Read this story to find out if they survive! 154 pgs, pb. Note: age-appropriate earthquake aftermath distress scenes may be disturbing to some readers.
