Now your students can explore the power and beauty of America's greatest literary works from a biblical Christian worldview. Even students who have never before "gotten" classic literature will discover how enjoyable it can be, how it speaks to their lives today, and how it affirms and illuminates biblical truth. The course uses the Socratic method of asking probing questions about each work and leading students to a deeper understanding of what the author is saying how he or she is saying it. Beautifully illustrated in a stunning hardcover edition, our American Literature course features:

Biographical essays examining the background, culture, and beliefs of each author

Works from every major period and literary movement

Extensive online solutions offering greater insight and clarity to both parents and students

We have always loved apologia curriculum, so when they came out with literature, we had to try it out. We used it for 9th grade. I appreciate that it approaches literature from different periods and worldviews. However, there is no teacher assistance beyond an answer key and essay grading assistance. While there is a very comprehensive glossary, the author assumes that the either the student or the parent are able to grasp all concepts without assistance. For instance, the author has sections on poetry, but does not provide any teaching notes on metre or rhythm. You will have to research and provide supplementary materials to your student. I appreciate that he provides detailed answers to the student workbook, which was a huge plus. I think the material definitely causes students to think more critically about literature and look further into a work. While I appreciate that he gives parents the opportunity to adjust the material to their own needs, ninety works is quite a bit even for literature loving moms. Definitely more parent involvement is required if you want your child to get the most out of this. It is not really a self-teaching curriculum from my point of view. I enjoyed the works he picked out for study - those were on a 9th grade level, however I would not recommend this for 9th or 10th graders. I would say this is a more advanced book for kids that have had a firm literary foundation and are in 11th or 12th grade.
