A methodology based on the Latin Trivium (three stages of learning), including the grammar stage (memorization and facts), logic stage (critical thinking), and rhetoric stage (developing/defending ideas).
Unit Study
A thematic or topical approach centered around one topic that integrates multiple subject areas.
Montessori (Discovery)
A methodology based on the work of a 20th century educator that emphasizes student and sensory-driven discovery learning and real-life applications.

Publisher's Description of R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey - Physics Level 1

RSO Physics (level one) is appropriate for 3rd through 6th grade. This comprehensive course presents complicated physics concepts in a way that young people can comprehend and immediately apply to everyday play and work. Topics covered include the study of matter, motion, friction, work, sound and wave, magnetism, electricity, and even a glimpse into the quantum world. Students will not only learn Newton's three laws of motion, but they will experiment with them and develop simple models of real-world applications such as rockets, auto safety, and electric motors. The course book offers a full-year curriculum, including all of the lesson pages, parent/teacher instructions, and lab worksheets.

The following is a list of topics your child will learn during the year while completing Physics (level one). Each topic is introduced with a lesson story that is read aloud by the parent or instructor. Each lesson is followed by 1 to 5 hands-on activity labs that reinforce the material and introduce science terminology and age-appropriate math. Remember your child will also be having a whole lot of fun. Also included in this scope are laughing, playing, exploring, reading, singing, and begging for more RSO!

Category Description for Comprehensive Science Programs

Items listed in this section tend to be complete science programs with a teacher and student component, requiring few supplements besides science supplies.

Category Description for R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey

Tactile and rigorous, this classically-based science program provides an excellent science experience. The program is designed for the non-science parent. If you are a squeamish person, R.E.A.L. Science may not be for you. You'll get dirty, handle bugs and worms, and learn through experimentation. The lessons in the book are intended to be done in order from start to finish, each lesson building upon the previous lessons. Two levels are available, perfect for multi-age learning or homeschool co-ops. The all-in-one text for Level One teaches science in an entertaining story-like format with hands-on activities, along with background science information, instructions, reading lists, journaling ideas, and supplemental websites. Student Worksheets are reproducible in Level One, although Student Pages are available separately. Science is planned 2-3 times per week. Formatted for independent learning, Level Two student texts bring science alive by engaging young people's minds through active participation in learning. Spiral bound Student Texts offer instruction and consumable activity sheets and review pages. Consumable student materials are available separately. Teacher Guides are recommended and include weekly schedules, learning goals, math concepts for labs, lesson reviews with information not found in the student book, lab material lists, answer keys and grading guidelines.

Category Description for R.E.A.L. Physics (Gr. 3-6)

Physics is the newest in the R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey Level 1 series. Following the same format as the other Level 1 topics, you will find everything you need between the two covers. There are 9 units for this topic and plenty of labs for kinesthetic learners. A suggested schedule is found in the front of the book. Labs can be done with very accessible items. A few things you may not have laying around the house are a spring scale (5-10 lb. capacity), iron filings, electricity supplies such as a D-cell battery holder (2 needed) and a miniature light bulb and socket (One from an old flashlight works best; not an LED), and a laser light. Remember that the student pages are reproducible for multiple children within your family. ~ Donna
