Lift-the-Flap Word Book (Usborne)
Give your child a lift-the-flap book to help him connect the written word with objects in his life. This is an ideal way to give your beginners practice in word recognition. Vocabulary is categorized by theme: On the Farm; I Can . . ., (actions); My Body and Clothes; Outdoor Words; On the Beach; What do They Say (animal sounds); and The Bedroom. Often, the focus of similar books is to introduce nouns; this one includes some verbs as well. Children learn the written word by either lifting the picture flap or lifting the written word flap. Below each flap, the opposite form is represented. This way, children can check their answers and learn to identify words. Pages are full color, quite pleasing, and not distracting. The last two pages list, in picture and written form, all 72 words used.
