Description

During the Civil War, a captain of the Third Ohio Volunteer Regiment visits Johnny's town as troops were being sent off to help in the war. The captain stated, “…this is going to be a war like none the world has ever seen." Johnny believed that if this war was going to be so great, the Union was going to need his help! Despite his father's rebuke, Johnny decided that he was going to serve, one way or another. After Johnny was laughed to scorn by the captain when he tried to volunteer, the nine-year-old boy sneaked onto the train with the soldiers. This was his battle to fight! He doesn't understand why people keep calling him things like “infant," “ridiculous," or “Pee-Wee." Once he gets to the camp where the rest of the soldiers are training and preparing, he is able to share a tent with the drummer—the beat of the march.

After he proves himself to be a strong and capable young lad, he earns his place as a second drummer. He drums alongside his new and admired friend, sixteen-year-old William. As he continues to serve and march on with his drum during battle, he feels the way to make a true difference for his country would be to actually fight in combat. Young John Lincoln Clem becomes well-known throughout the Country for his ambition, bravery, and sacrifice. Based on a true story, read all about the infamous Johnny's journey and his courage as the youngest man to fight in the Civil War. Along with the story line, many real photographs from the war are featured.
