History in the classical education methodology begins with the Ancient times and follows a four year cycle, leaving the coverage of American History until 3rd and 4th grade. Yet, many families desire to introduce their younger children to the foundational events of our nation's history and to the men and women who were instrumental in our great nation. Written for kindergarten and early elementary students, Adventures in America covers the early days of America, from the Native American population to the adventures of Paul Bunyan and Johnny Appleseed, as well as incorporates an essential study of the fifty states.

The Teacher's Book contains instructions for use, a 36-week lesson guide, stories with review questions designed to develop narration skills, optional copy work, weekly hands-on crafts and activities related to the time period, and additional recommended reading selections. Age appropriate activities use easy to find materials and a list of all necessary supplies is included. There is also a listing of helpful websites. The Student Notebook includes coloring pages, space to record narration and copywork, and the activity pages for fifty states. Additionally, you will need Smart about Fifty States (item #053263) and state flag stickers (item #027052).

Focusing on the skills developed in the grammar stage, this study provides a solid introduction to American History for younger children. The stories are concise, yet interesting and the hands-on activities enable history to come alive. This yearlong study provides a wonderful introduction to US History for Classically minded families, or any homeschooling family who seeks to provide an essential overview of America to their children. Pb, Teacher's Book, 144 pgs, Student Notebook , 175 pgs. You will need separate student notebooks for each child as the pages are not reproducible. ~ Deanne

do you have to use smart about fifty states?
Colleen on Jan 20, 2021
BEST ANSWER: No not necessarily. 2 of the 3 days you can just do the history lessons. When you get to the state page, student will fill in the capital, abbreviation, nickname and something you thought interesting. That's it. You can find that info on the web. We do however enjoy Smart About the Fifty States. It gives a brief overview of the state in a colorful way for the kids. Also on the state work page, there is a place for a flag sticker in the top right corner. Hope that helps!
What is the additional recommended reading for Adventures in America?
A shopper on Aug 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Not additional recommended reading exactly, but you will need Smart about Fifty States (item #053263) and state flag stickers (item #027052).

Just love it!
I would really recommend purchasing the student guide to go with the teacher guide. It really brings the stories to life for the student, and makes a very nice Journal of their years working the subject.

I was looking for some loosely structured American History lessons that my 5-year-old son and I could enjoy together This is definitely it! The text/teacher's ed book is essential but if I had to do it again I would skip the student guide unless my son was writing when we started it The text/teacher's ed contains small stories that illustrate a historical event or person or a summary of a historical event In one week the schedule calls for 2 readings a project and 1 or 2 states - facts to learn about We have only done a couple of the projects as our school days are not long and more focused on reading and math Here is what a week of history looks like for us: Read one small page (the length of each story - nonfiction) after I finish breakfast or lunch and my son is still eating The next day read another story at a meal Third history day learn about a state When we go to the library about every 2 weeks I'll pick up a children's book about something we learned or someone we learned about to help the information stick Keep in mind that included in the student text are coloring pages (you can always find some online) notebooking pages (mostly just lines and frames for writing and drawing) and state pages with an outlined state to color and space beneath for the capital nickname abbreviation spot to place the state flag sticker and what was most interesting The state information comes from a separate book Smart About Fifty States which is colorfully illustrated with snippets of facts about each state The state flag stickers are also sold separately Since my son looks at the Smart About Fifty States on his own free time that was worth the price even though you can get all of the information from the web You can also get state pages to color on the web for free If budget is a real concern just pick up a library book about states and do a set of states every month or whenever you can check out a state book We did not use the blank notebooking pages in the student guide Since I read to my son while he was eating we did not use many of the coloring pages either All of this is why I would not buy the student guide if I knew then what I know now For the Rainbow Resource price this little history introduction was well worth it especially since there is no prep at all!
