Category Description for BJU Press Curriculum:

We are pleased to be able to distribute BJU Press curriculum to our customers. Most homeschoolers are already familiar with their materials. For those who are not, BJU is a Christian university located in South Carolina that produces and markets curriculum materials for Christian schools as well as home schools. Probably the most homeschool-friendly full-curriculum supplier, they have not only accommodated homeschoolers, but have continually worked to make their materials better suited to the homeschooling family. Many of their courses now contain manuals written specifically for the home school setting, and visuals and supplemental materials have been "pared down" from the bulkier visuals still used in classrooms. While other curriculum suppliers initially frowned on distributing teacher materials to homeschoolers, and provided only expensive classroom versions, Bob Jones quickly embraced homeschoolers, readily allowing them access to teacher's editions and, eventually, producing less expensive spiral-bound or paperbound versions to save money for homeschooling families. Their materials are all top quality. They are professionally prepared, educationally sound, and Biblically-based. Used in Christian school classrooms across the country for years and constantly improved, they are courses you can trust in your homeschool as well. We have long been fans of Bob Jones curriculum materials, having used courses in almost every subject area for one child or another through the years. In our particular situation (seven children, Mom and Dad sharing in teaching as well as in running Rainbow Resource Center), a well-constructed, teacher-ready course can be a God-send. Although we have used a variety of methods and curriculums in our homeschool through the years (and continue to do so), we strongly feel that the Bob Jones materials we have used have helped to produce excellent, college-ready students. Unless you have a particularly strong aversion to textbooks of any kind, at any level, we highly recommend these materials to you.

Curriculum can be found by subject area in our catalog; see index for page numbers. A free scope and sequence is available below, with specific information by grade level.

Category Description for BJU Press Science:

With so many secular materials infused with evolution, it's sometimes difficult to find solid science materials that are based on Creationism. Bob Jones Science is thoroughly Christian, including many evidences and support of Creationism and many "holes" in the theory of evolution, particularly at the upper grade levels. Vital to the program are the student activities, or labs. The scientific method is emphasized as children participate on hands-on activities and experiments throughout the curriculum. The junior high and high school levels are full-blown laboratory science courses, complete with a separate lab manual. Experiments are excellent, but some of them require unique materials or are difficult to do in a home environment. The revised texts are more home-friendly, though, and Bob Jones also offers a Lab Manual Supplement for home schoolers, containing tips for doing lab activities in smaller groups. We have used many of these upper level texts in our home school. We also have accumulated a wealth of laboratory equipment and supplies over the years, which has made the lab work easier. I have sometimes substituted labs from Experiences in Biology and Experiences in Chemistry (from Castle Heights - see index) where it's been too difficult to use a particular lab. Bob Jones has made it easy to obtain lab materials and chemicals (you can order almost anything you need for their courses on the Science Lab Materials Order Form), but some labs are still pretty complex for a home environment, requiring a lot of set-up and preparation time. For each grade level, essential materials are listed first, followed by asterisked (*) supplemental support materials. Support items used at multiple grade levels are at the end.

Category Description for COMPREHENSIVE SCIENCE PROGRAMS:

Items listed in this section tend to be complete science programs with a teacher and student component, requiring few supplements besides science supplies.

Category Description for BJU Press Biology (5th Ed. / 4th Ed.):

A comprehensive high-school biology laboratory course including cellular biology, genetics, biotechnology, the history of life, microbiology, botany, zoology, ecology, human anatomy and physiology, and the systems of the human body. The course takes a tacitly Christian position on current issues like AIDS, abortion, sexuality, drugs, euthanasia, hypnotism, homosexuality, ecology, physical disorders, genetic engineering, etc. Laboratory exercises are included in the Student Lab Manual (sold separately). The Dissection Labs DVD is a real help, often providing a better view of the target system than a real dissection provides. If you decide to do the actual dissections, you will need a kit that contains specimens (earthworm, crayfish, perch and frog), dissection tray, and tools. Bob Jones sells one that includes the Dissection Activity Book, or check out our item #8779 which includes specimens, tray and tools, but no book or magnifier. The Dissection Kit Student Activity and Teacher's Activity books sold separately provide detailed descriptions of the four specimens, as well as instructions and diagrams on the best way to dissect each creature and questions to answer along the way. The teacher's book contains the answers. A microscope and other equipment may also be necessary.

How should we store this before ready to use?
A shopper on Dec 26, 2020
BEST ANSWER: According to the supplier, specimens will last indefinitely if they shipping bags/containers are kept sealed until used. Here are some FAQs from the Nasco website:

How long with they remain preserved?
As long as the original container seal is unbroken, specimens will remain usable indefinitely. If the seal on the specimen bag has been broken during transit, the shelf life is affected only slightly. Just close the bag with a rubber band or some other type of closure. Keep tightly sealed. Exposure to air will not cause decay, but specimens will gradually dry out. Between classroom sessions, return specimens to tightly closed plastic bag or airtight container.

What if they seem to dry out?
If specimens are to be dissected over an extended period of time, they can be remoistened with NASCO-Guard® Humectant Fluid (item numbers SB17218M, SB12631M, SB32395M, or SB32396M).

Can I use water to moisten the specimens?
No, do NOT add water. Do NOT add formaldehyde or any other preservative to NASCO-Guard® specimens. Your specimens are completely preserved and the addition of water or other preservatives might have undesirable effects on the specimens.
Which dissection instruments are included?
A shopper on Aug 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Evidently, we were in error when we said there were 15 instruments in this kit. This will be corrected soon on our website. Per the publisher, here are the instruments that are included:

Chrome plated Student scalpel
Glass dropper with rubber bulb
Dissecting scissors 4.5"
Forceps 4.5", chrome plated
Ruler, plastic 6"
Teasing needle angular with plastic handle
Teasing needle straight with plastic handle
Are these specimens bagged seperately, or all together?
A shopper on May 31, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I received mine with all of the specimens bagged together.
